Edward A. Crowell
Edward Alan Crowell of Davis died after a long illness on June 6, 2002, at Woodland Memorial Hospital. He was 72.
He was born on July 25, 1929, near Joplin, Mo., in rural Jasper County. Born to Martin E. Crowell and Blanche Fisher Crowell, he was the youngest of nine children.
His father, a miner, died of black lung disease when Ed was only 2 years old. As a result, he was raised by his mother, who received much help from his older brothers and sisters.
He attended Enterprise school, a two-room, two-teacher school, for his first six years of education. The family then moved to Joplin, where he finished elementary school, high school and two years at Joplin Junior College.
In 1949, he and his mother moved to San Lorenzo to be near the other children of the family. He attended UC Berkeley and graduated in 1952 with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry.
He spent the next two years in the Army and was stationed at Bethesda, Md., where he worked in a research laboratory. After being discharged at the end of the Korean War, he returned to the East Bay area and worked as a chemist.
In 1957, he came to Davis and started working at UC Davis in the department of enology and viticulture, where he continued to work for the next 31 years.
In 1961, he marriage Virginia Keith Nugent, and in 1973, he earned a master's degree in food science.
He was active in the Davis Lutheran Church and became a founding member of Our Faith Lutheran Church. He served in many offices there, including president of the congregation for several terms. He probably most enjoyed being part of the groundskeeping team with some other loyal "grass mowers."
He was also a member of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture and was treasurer for several years.
He enjoyed children's sports events and coached a girls' softball team.
He was preceded in death by sisters Lavina Adams, Daris Pratto, Faye Mullinix and Laura Pierce.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; his daughter and son-in-law Jeanne and Jason Dayne of Evergreen, Colo.; son and daughter-in-law Martin and Marilou Crowell of Rogue River, Ore.; and daughter and son-in-law Amy and Don McAllister of Santa Rosa. He is further survived by six grandchildren: Stephanie and Tony Coma, Lana Dayne, and Erin, Elise and Leigh McAllister.
He is also survived by his sister, Rosa Crowell; brother Eldy Crowell of Joplin; brother Barry Crowell of Bella Vista, Ark.; brother Bill Crowell of Fairfield and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 21, at Our Faith Lutheran Church, 1801 Oak Ave., Davis.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to the Building Fund at Our Faith Lutheran Church or to a charity of the donor's choice.
CRUM
George Harold Crum
George Harold Crum passed away on Monday, Sept. 11, 2000 in his home in Winters. Mr. Crum was born March 6, 1918 in Berkeley. He and his family moved to Winters in 1924 where he attended Wolfskill School. Mr. Crum graduated from Davis High School in 1936. He graduated from UC Davis in 1941, then went on to UC Berkeley, where he received his teaching credentials.
Mr. Crum taught agriculture for one year in Paterson. He joined the US Navy in 1942, where he served as a Captain of a Destroyer Escort. After the war he returned to Winters and became a fruit and nut farmer for 40 years.
Mr. Crum was a member of the Winters Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, Presbyterian Church, and he was president of the Freestone Peach Association. He also served on the Winters Joint Unified School District's Board of Trustees. George wrote a column for the Winters Express "George Crum Sitting In." The column was based on experiences of the Three Crum brothers in the 1930s and 1940s.
He was preceded in death by his brother, William Bailey Crum of Los Angeles.
Mr. Crum is survived by his wife of 56 years, Josephine Miller Crum. They were marriage in 1944. He is also survived by his son, Donald Crum, and his wife, Sarah of Paradise; son, Richard Crum, and his wife, Connie, of Winters; son, David Crum, and his wife, Linda of Chico; grandchildren, Jeffrey Crum of Paradise, Ron and Kristen Karlen, Josh and Lacie Benton, and Erritt and Stephanie Crum, all of Winters; great-grandson Kyle Karlen and great-granddaughter, Karissa Karlen, both of Winters. Mr. Crum is also survived by his brother, Robert Errett Crum, and his wife Gladys, of Carson City, Nevada.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 2:30 p.m. at the Pioneer Presbyterian Church, 205 Russell Street, Winters. Private inurnment will be held at a later date at the Winters Cemetery.

Janet Crum (1st of 2 obits.)
Janet Crum passed away peacefully at her home near Winters on Aug. 17, 2005 at the age of 80.
Janet was born in Woodland, where her great-grandfather, Joseph H. Harlan, had settled and farmed since 1863.
She spent her early years in Woodland and Berkeley, graduating from UC Berkeley in 1946.
Janet marriage her high school sweetheart, Albert N. Crum, in 1947.
Together they raised four children. Janet was a consummate homemaker, sustaining her family as they lived in Oakland, Berkeley, New Orleans and Clayton, Calif.
Janet retired to the beloved Winters area farm of her grandparents, Joseph L. and Mabel S. Harlan, and parents, William A. and Helen Harlan Chick, in 1981.
She cherished family get-togethers and enthusiastically shared family history.
To honor her family heritage of farming in the Woodland area, Janet contributed to the Heidrick Ag History Center.
Janet was ever thoughtful, generous and unpretentious.
Others delighted in her company as she so clearly did in theirs. She will be dearly missed.
Janet is survived by her husband of 58 years, Albert; son, Albert; daughters, Carol English, Liese Hunter and her husband Craig, and Marianne Moresi and her husband Bill; grandchildren, Justin Crum, Ryan and Christine Edwards, Keith Hunter, Billy and Joshua Moresi; and great-granddaughter, Jasmine Edwards.
She was preceded in death by her grandson, Will English.
There will be no services, at Janet's request.

She was a homemaker and mother.
She retired in 1981 to the Winters area farm where her great-grandfather, Joseph H. Harlan, had settled and farmed since 1863.
She also was a supporter of the Heidrick Ag History Center.
Survivors include Mrs. Crum's husband of 58 years, Albert; her daughters, Carol English, Liese Hunter and her husband Craig, and Marianne Moresi and her husband Bill; her son, Albert; her grandchildren, Justin Crum, Ryan and Christine Edwards, Keith Hunter, Billy and Joshua Moresi; and her great-granddaughter, Jasmine Edwards. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Will English; her parents; and her grandparents, Joseph L. and Mabel S. Harlan.
Services: Respecting the wishes of Mrs. Crum, no services are scheduled. McNary's Chapel of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.
CRUMPLEY
Margaret Roberta Crumpley
Margaret Roberta Crumpley entered into rest on Oct. 4, 2004.
She and her twin brother, Clyde, were born on July 14, 1932 to Leah and Clyde Mann.
She was raised and educated in Oakland, where she also became a baptized Christian.
In Sept. 1956, Margaret marriage Jimmie Crumpley, and they were blessed with two children, Jimmie Andrew and Cathleen Velma, who joined Sandra, a daughter from a previous marriage.
Margaret enjoyed many activities, but her favorite was spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Family and friends were invited to attend memorial services on Friday, Oct. 8, at Inspiration Chapel and Napa Valley Memorial Park, 2382 Napa-Vallejo Highway, Napa.

Elizabeth Wood Cudd (1st obituary)
Elizabeth Wood Cudd died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at age 95.
Born Nov. 30, 1907, in Navasota, Texas, Mrs. Cudd was resident of Covell Gardens in Davis. She was the daughter of the late Solomon William Wood and Elizabeth Hurst Wood. She had been a Yolo County resident for six years and was a Texas resident for 89 years. She graduated from Wichita Falls High School and attended Texas State Teachers College.
Survivors include her daughter, Helen Voss; son, Bill; grandchildren, Susan Robertson of The Woodlands, Texas, Shelley Robertson of Zamora, Will Harris of Dallas, Texas, Lincoln Harris of College Station, Texas, Gage Harris of Ft. Worth, Texas, Lela Mead and husband Jeff of College Station, Texas, Ron Dwyer-Voss and wife Sue of Sacramento, and Susan Voss Rothmeier and husband Kris of Portland, Ore.; and great-grandchildren, Kathryn Heimbach, Noah Dwyer-Voss, Sierra Dwyer-Voss, Henry Voss-Rothmeier, Evan Harris and Madelyn Mead. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Evan Harris, Royal Burnside and Jack Cudd; one sister and two brothers.

Elizabeth (Wood) Cudd died on Feb. 14, 2003. Born on Nov. 30, 1907, she was 95 years old.
She was a resident of Covell Gardens in Davis. Born in Navasota, Texas, to Solomon William Wood and Elizabeth Hurst Wood, she lived for 89 years in Texas before moving to California to be near her daughter. She graduated from Wichita Falls High School and attended Texas State Teachers College.
Her keen interests were reading Newsweek, golf, decorating and maintaining a classy wardrobe. Her love of friends and her sense of humor were with her until the end.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Evan Harris, Royal Burnside and Jack Cudd; her parents; a sister; and two brothers.
She is survived by her daughter, Helen Harris Voss and her husband Ron of Esparto; and son, Bill Harris and his wife Mary Catherine of College Station, Texas.
Her greatest joys were her grandchildren, Susan Robertson of The Woodlands, Texas; Shelley Robertson of Zamora; Will Harris and his wife Laurie of Dallas, Texas; Lincoln Harris of College Station, Texas; Gage Harris of Fort Worth, Texas; Lela Mead and her husband Jeff of College Station, Texas; Ron Dwyer-Voss and his wife Sue of Sacramento; and Susan Voss-Rothmeier and her husband Kris of Portland, Ore.
