WOHLERS
Mary Cleaveland Wohlers
Mary Cleaveland Wohlers died Jan. 7, 2001, in her home. She was born in her parents' home in Berkeley on Dec. 28, 1912.
She attended a portion of her early schooling in Datil, N. M. and later attended the Anna Head School for Girls in Berkeley. She began college at San Jose State University at the age of 16 and later transferred to UC Berkeley.
As a teen she played at the Berkeley Tennis Club and was ranked as the third-seeded tennis player in California, behind Helen Wills and Helen Jacobs, both of whom later won Wimbledon championship titles as well as U.S. championship titles.
In July of 1934, she marriage Claus Joseph Wohlers, a Montana rancher and miner, who worked on the Gold Dredge 'Mosier, ' which was constructed, operated and partly owned by her father, Newton Cleaveland in Pioneer, Mont.
Her Montana ranch life started with a small log house and comparatively rustic conditions with neither running water nor electricity.
After 10 years on the ranch, she moved with her children to Deer Lodge, Mont.
In 1953, she with her two youngest children, moved back to Berkeley, where she began working for the Montclair Nursery to further develop her life-long interest in plants.
During this time she also returned as a part-time student at UC Berkeley to study music, with an entire new career in the plant nursery business, which later included her own wholesale growing operation.
She was among the first and most vocal opponents of a plan to expand an existing golf course onto the site of the Tilden Regional Park Botanical Gardens, which would have virtually destroyed this unique resource and in particular, the rare native plant collection.
This small group became the core of the initial founders of the California Native Plant Society. As one of the most active founding members, she helped organize the first plant sale as a fund-raiser. This early success was subsequently repeated. Both the society and plant sales have since become prototypes which have been expanded and utilized by many others since that time.
She later worked in the department of landscape horticulture at UC Davis, and after her first retirement and with data from her Davis colleagues, proceeded to both teach all the original courses and was the major contributor to the design of the degreed Landscape Horticultural curriculum at the College of Marin in Marin County.
In her second retirement she relocated to Peralta, N.M., where she was the president of the first chapter of the New Mexico Native Plant Society.
She was the youngest daughter of Newton Cleaveland and Agnes Morley Cleaveland. Her sisters, Morley Cleaveland of Datil, N.M.; Loraine Lavender of Santa Fe, N.M.; and brother Norman Cleaveland also of Santa Fe, N.M., preceded her in death.
She is survived by her three children: Beth Tietjen and husband Joe of Bosque Farms, N.M..; Norman Wohlers of Davis; and Mary Ann Montague of Dixon. Her grandchildren are Julie Ledbetter of Los Lunas, N.M.; Gloria Caruana and husband Greg of La Mesa; Janet Anderson and husband Mark, of Rio Rancho N.M.; Lee Tietjen and Joseph Tietjen of Los Lunas, N.M.; Tara Tietjen of Mesa, Ariz.; Lila Smiel and husband Scott of Los Lunas, N.M.; Cady and Brice Horobin-Wohlers of Davis and seven great-grandchildren: Aubree and Nicholas Caruana; Sebastian Tietjen; Brittnee Maniscalco; Collin and Clayton Anderson and Tabitha Smiel.
A family funeral was held Jan. 9, in Belen, N.M.
