Moulton's research included studies of mammary tumors in dogs, foot and mouth disease, African swine fever, African sleeping sickness caused by the tsetse fly, an outbreak of pleural pneumonia in East Africa in 1967, and other tropical and parasitic animal diseases.
He received numerous research scholarships from the USDA, the Rockefeller Foundation and Fulbright Scholar grants for sabbatical work in Cambridge, England, Kenya and Zimbabwe. He spent more than seven years abroad during his tenure at UC Davis.
In Kenya, he acted as director of the University of California Education Abroad Program for two years, helping American students adapt to Nairobi University, local culture and life in the wilderness while on safari. Later, in Zimbabwe, he helped set up the veterinary school at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare. He also worked at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center, near Long Island, N.Y., for two summers.
Moulton retired in 1987. He spent several years living on the Mendocino coast, where he enjoyed landscape oil painting, before returning to Davis.
