Marjory Alsbury
Marjory Alsbury, a longtime Dixon resident, died peacefully at the Vacaville Rehabilitation and Convalescence Center on Nov. 11, 2004. She was 85.
Born in Benkelman, Nebraska, on Mar. 31, 1919, Mrs. Alsbury taught school before marrying her high school sweetheart. She was a gifted seamstress, taught 4H, judged sewing at county fairs and was an accomplished gardener. After her husband's death, she began working at UC Davis and retired in 1989. She kept herself busy with many projects until she was no longer able. She was a member of the Dixon Community Church and of the Dixon Senior Citizens' Center. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her four children, daughter Sylvia Jean Humphreys and her husband Merril of Imperial, Nebraska; son Merwyn Glen Alsbury and his wife Linda of Winters; son Loren Dean Alsbury; daughter Glenda Lynn Curiale and husband Tom of Colorado Springs, CO; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Wesley Alsbury.
A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at Gateway Chapel, 201 Main Street in Winters. Interment followed at the Silveyville Cemetery, in Dixon.

ALVAREZ
Arthur Alvarez
Arthur Alvarez died on Dec. 20, 1999, in his Esparto residence. Born on July 18, 1941, in Los Angeles, to Alfonso and Catalina (Parra) Alvarez, he was 58.
He had a career in law enforcement that spanned more than 35 years and included active duty for the Williams and Davis police departments as well as the Yolo County District Attorney's Office, and culminated as a special agent supervisor for the state Department of Justice in Sacramento.
He was recognized by his peers for his excellent law enforcement skills and immutable sense of humor at his retirement party held this past August.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alfonso Alvarez, and by his sister, Sally Ballesteros.
He is survived by his mother, Catalina Alvarez of Mission Hills; his wife, Mari of Esparto; daughter, Christina Alvarez of Woodland; sons, Alfonso and his wife Melanie of Berkeley, Whitney and his wife Connie of Tomales, and Andrew and his wife Saundra of Elk Grove; and his children's mother, Susan Alvarez of Jolon.
He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Vanessa Alvarez of Elk Grove, Josephine Alvarez of Tomales, Alexander Alvarez of Tomales and Marta Alvarez of Berkeley; and two nephews, Larry and Jerry Ballesteros.
Friends are invited to attend a vigil service at 7 p.m. today at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Esparto, and a funeral Mass at noon Thursday, also at St. Martin's. Burial will follow at the Capay Cemetery.

ALVAREZ
Maria C. Alvarez
Maria C. Alvarez passed away unexpectedly October 28, 1999, in Phoenix, Arizona, as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident. Mrs. Alvarez was 64 years of age. She was born in Mexico June 3, 1935.
Mrs. Alvarez was a resident of Yolo County for 39 years. She was a homemaker all of her adult life and was employed by the Mariani Nut Company for the past 17 years.
Mrs. Alvarez is survived by her husband Rafael Alvarez of Esparto. Children: Ralph Alvarez of Esparto, Jose Alvarez and wife Elva of Woodland, Flora Hernandez and her husband Saul of Esparto, Martin Alvarez of Esparto and his girlfriend Armida Perez of Sacramento, Rudy Alvarez of San Francisco, and Lupe Alvarez-Trejo and husband Jose of Esparto. Grandchildren: Ivan, Rafael and Juan Alvarez, of Woodland; Veronica and Monica Hernandez of Alyssa Trejo all of Esparto. Brother, Jesus Castro of Mexico; sisters, Trinidad Castro de Lopez and Refugio Castro de Melendrez both of Mexico; nephew, Robert Castro of Dixon; great nephews and great niece, Julian, Alejandro and Yannessa Castro of Dixon.
Mrs. Alvarez was preceded in death by her parents, Pascual and Guadalupe (Caratachea) Castro and sisters, Rosa Castro de Ayala, Josefina Castro de Camarena, Dolores Castro de Ayala and Catalina Castro de la Losa.
The vigil was held on Monday evening at 7 p.m. at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Esparto. The funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. in St. Martin's Catholic Church, Tuesday, Nov. 9, with interment following at Capay Cemetery.

ALVES
Arthur B. Alves, Sr.
Mr. Arthur B. Alves Sr., 84, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. Born on May 9, 1917, in College City, Mr. Alves moved to Woodland in 1928 with his parents and attended local schools. He later lived in Milpitas for 35 years and after retiring lived in Woodland before relocating to Modesto five years ago, following the death of his wife.
Mr. Alves served in the U.S. Army during WWII with the Army Signal Corps from 1941 to 1946 and spent one year in the Philippines. He worked for Kaiser Sand and Gravel in San Jose for 40 years as a maintenance mechanic. He was a member of the Ceres Christian Church in Ceres. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Woodland.
Mr. Alves is survived by his daughter, Margaret Hernandez of Hayward; sons, Bud of Vacaville, Joe of Los Angels, Frank of Modesto and daughter, Margaret Hernandez of San Jose. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild, as well as by brothers, John, Barney and Daniel of Woodland, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Alves was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, and parents Domingos and Rose Alves, as well as sisters, Mary Perry and Rose Ross.
Remembrances may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 4040 Moorpark Ave., San Jose, 95117.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., today, Tuesday, at Ceres Christian Church in Ceres. A visitation is scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. today, Tuesday, at Evins Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow on Wednesday at Oakhill cemetery in San Jose.

AMANN
Jack H. Amann
Jack H. Amann died on April 10, 2004, in his residence in Diamond Springs. He was 93 years old.
Born July 6, 1910, in Spokane, Wash., he was an electrical engineer for 36 years. He was manager for the Western states for Square D Company, working in the Sacramento and Davis area. He had bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from California Institute of Technology.
He enjoyed golfing throughout his lifetime. He had served as president of the California Golf Club and helped establish a senior program at the Cameron Park Country Club. He also had the honor of shooting nine holes-in-one.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Joy.
He is survived by his daughter, Jacque Bartholomew, and her husband Wayne of Davis.
Private family services were held at the Chapel of the Pines Funeral Home, 2855 Cold Springs Road in Placerville.

AMEN
Elmer Alfored Amen, Sr.
Elmer Alfored Amen Sr. died peacefully in his Woodland home Tuesday March 29, 2005 at the age of 79.
Born March 22, 1922 in Sacramento. Mr. Amen had been a life-long Yolo County resident. He was the son of the late Lydia and Henry Amen Sr.
Mr. Amen grew up on his mother and father's Ventura Ranch. After finishing High School, Mr. Amen enlisted in the Navy on March 4, 1944. He served on the U.S.S. Mercy Hospital Ship for two years. While sailing off the island of Okinawa, Japan, he witnessed a Japanese suicide bomber hit the U.S.S. Missouri. Fortunately only the suicide bomber was killed. Four years ago, he toured the Missouri now stationed at Pearl Harbor, and he got to see where the suicide bomber hit the ship. Mr. Amen was honorably discharged form the Navy in 1946.
Mr. Amen retired in September 1986 from the City of Woodland after 31 years working for the Public Works Dept. and managing the Woodland Cemetery for 20 of those years.
Mr. Amen was a member of the Woodland Presbyterian Church and a member of the Woodland Elk's Lodge No. 1299 for 46 years.
Family and friends remember the fun times he and Dee Dee had traveling with the Elk's Tail Enders, his large collection of Beanie Babies, label pins, and coins. You would often see him riding around town in his yellow Volkswagen (Bug) with the American flag waving on the antenna. Mostly, Mr. Amen will be remembered for all the fun, loving times he spent with family and friends.
Mr. Amen is survived by his daughters, Diana Pearson and husband, Ron; Joanne Branigan and husband, Ron; Cindy Dahler and husband, Mike; sons, Elmer Amen Jr., and Bill Sims; grandchildren, Kim Snyder, Karla Lindstrom, Steve Pearson, Christopher Branigan, David Amen, Jenny Thorp, Dawn Gasque, Andy Dahler, and Penny McGrath; 18 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; sister, Pat Giguiere, brother, Henry Amen Jr., and his wife Linda; numerous nieces and nephews, and his good friend, Vesta Wirth.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Lydia and Henry Sr.; two brothers, Jack and Hugh Amen; sister, Evelyn Bender and his wife of 37 years, Dolores "Dee Dee" Amen.
A visitation is planned for Sunday, April 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St. and a funeral service will be held at McNary's Chapel, Monday, April 4 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow the service at Monument Hill Memorial Cemetery. McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with all arrangements.

Elmer Alfored Amen Sr. died at his home in Woodland Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at age 79.

ADAMS
Dorothy P. Adams
Dorothy Phyllis Adams, a seven-year resident of Davis, died April 1, 2000. Born June 8, 1918, in Carrington, N.D., to Carl and Pauline Whitkey Hall, she was 81.
She attended school in Carrington, N.D. She and her husband, Milton Leroy Adams, marriage in 1940 and made their home in Los Angeles for many years before moving to Placerville, where she lived for 18 years before moving to Davis in 1993.
She was a member of the Davis United Methodist Church. She was a very active person who enjoyed singing in her church choir, painting and volunteering at the hospital. She also loved to travel.
She was a homemaker and sold real estate for 20 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Pockrandt of Davis; son, Philip Adams of Rohnert Park; brother, Earl Liddle of North Dakota; two sisters, Bernice Footitt of California and Grace Young of Minnesota; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her memorial service at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Davis United Methodist Church, 1620 Anderson Road. Pastor Eileen Lindsay will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the Davis United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1620 Anderson Road, Davis, CA 95616.
