Elizabeth Allen
Elizabeth Allen died at St. Helena Hospital on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, at age 98.
Born Dec. 17, 1906, in Dunnigan, Mrs. Allen was the youngest of the 11 children of Frank and Mary McCullough. Her maternal grandfather, John Gapen and grandmother, Anjanett Wallace came to California in 1849. Her father was born in Illinois, farmed and raised mules, cattle and other livestock. She often said, she learned to ride a horse before she could walk as did the rest of the family. She attended the Dunnigan Grammar School and Pierce High School in College City. She marriage Charles Garland in 1928 and resided near Dunnigan. Mr. Garland died in 1947. She marriage Clarence Allen in 1950, and they lived in College City, where her husband did carpentry work and raised almonds. Upon retirement they moved to the Cecil Ranch near Grimes.
Survivors include her son, Wallace Garland and wife Geraldine of Angwin; granddaughters, Anjeanette Garland of Beaver Creek, Ore., and Sarah Baker of Burbank; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Garland, in 1947; and second husband, Clarence Allen, in 1995.
The family requests memorials be directed to the restoration of the old Dunnigan church, Union Church of Dunnigan, P.O. Box 203, Dunnigan 95937, in her behalf.
Services: Respecting the wishes of Mrs. Allen, her remains were given to research to UC Davis.
CHAMBERS
George Chambers
George Chambers died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, at Woodland Memorial Hospital. He was 89.
Graveside services begin at 11:30 a.m. on Monday at Capay Cemetery, 24727 County Road 22 in Esparto.
Born Dec. 19, 1916, in Aurora, Nev., to George and Adaline (Quenell) Chambers, he grew up in Seattle, where he attended local schools. A Yolo County resident for the past 60 years, he was employed in the construction industry for more than 50 years. His final project before his 1984 retirement was the construction of Woodland Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Carpenters Union Local No. 46.
He is survived by his wife, Vesta Chambers of Esparto; and his godson, Stephen Day of Woodland.
Evergreen Funeral Service of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.
ADAMS
Paul Warren Adams
Paul Warren Adams died in Davis Thursday, June 30, 2005 at age 67.
Mr. Adams was born April 8, 1938 in Dallas. He had been a Yolo County resident for five years. After graduating from high school, he served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He worked as a printer for the Bureau of Reclamation and Indian Affairs for 40 years.
Survivors include Mr. Adams' wife of 29 years, Dottie Lindeman; his daughter, Lisa Celoni and her husband Rod of Davis; his son, Steven Adams and his wife Roxanne of Rocklin; his grandchildren, Amanda, Danielle, Chase, Cheyanne, Jaime, C.J. and Casey.
Services: A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 6 at Chapel of the Angels Mortuary, 250 Race St., Grass Valley. Private inurnment will be held at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Chapel of the Angels Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
JANES
Hayden R. Janes
Hayden R. Janes died Friday, June 6, 2003, in his Rumsey home at age 87.
Born May 22, 1916, a native of Woodland, Mr. Janes was a lifelong resident of Yolo County. He served as a Trustee for the Rumsey School in 1948. He was a member of the Buckeye Masonic Lodge since 1945. He was also a member of Yolo County Grange and Yolo County Farm Bureau as well as a member of the Guinda Methodist Church.
Survivors include his daughter, Bonnie Petersen of Susanville; granddaughters, Kim Pearson and husband Mike Hayes, Kathy Howard and husband Randy; grandson, Doug Peterson and wife Julie; and great-grandchildren, Brysan Hayes and Taylor B. Hayes, Jessyca Howard, Robert Dean Howard, Nathan Howard and Jacob Petersen. He was preceded in death by his wife Wilma M. Janes in 1998; and sons, David Janes in 1940 and Robert Janes in 1972.
The family requests memorials be directed to Capay Valley Fire Department, P.O. Box 6, Brooks, 95607; or the Rumsey Hall, P.O. Box 34, Rumsey, 95677. Arrangements are under the direction of McNary's Chapel of Woodland.
Services: The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 9, 2003 at McNary's Chapel, with interment to follow at Capay Cemetery.
JANSEN
Frankie E. Jansen
Frankie E. Jansen died at Alderson Convalescent Hospital in Woodland Thursday, May 5, 2005 at age 107.
Mrs. Jansen was born Nov. 15, 1897 in Nebraska to Clarence and Georgia Casselman. She had been a Yolo County resident for 16 years. She attended a rural elementary school in Nebraska and later graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1916. She taught for two terms and later worked as a clerk in retail stores in Ainsworth, Neb. After retiring at age 77 she kept active in her church and clubs. On her 100th birthday, more than 100 family and friends came from eight states to help her celebrate.
Survivors include Mrs. Jansen's granddaughter, Nadine De Smet and her husband Terry, one niece and two nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband nearly 30 years, George Jansen; her son, Clarence; her daughter-in-law, Charlotte; her grandson, Larry; two sisters and one nephew.
Services: Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 10 at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland. A funeral will follow visitation at 2 p.m. at McNary's. Interment will be at Ainsworth Cemetery in Ainsworth, Neb. McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
CHANDON Jr.
Joseph L. Chandon Jr.
Joseph L. Chandon Jr. died in Roseburg, Ore., Friday, July 5, 2002, at age 78.
Born Sept. 18, 1923, in Esparto, Mr. Chandon was the son of the late Joseph L. and Dorothy E. Chandon. He had been living in Roseburg, Ore. for the past 15 years. He was very active in Boy Scouts and served overseas in the Army during World War II. He farmed with his father.
Mr. Chandon is survived by his sister, Pauline Vest of Santa Rosa; sisters-in-law, Trudy McClellan of Sacramento and Anne E. Chandon of Esparto; as well as a large family of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is scheduled at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 13, at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland.
The family requests that no flowers be sent but that memorial contributions be directed to Esparto Library in his name.
McNary's Chapel of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.
John Jacobs
A memorial service for John Jacobs is scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday at Congregation Bet Haverim, the Jewish Fellowship of Davis, 1821 Oak Ave. Aloha attire is welcome.
Jacobs, 49, died of cancer on May 24, 2000, at his home in Davis. A well-known political columnist for The Sacramento Bee and the author of several books, he had received numerous awards for his reporting and writing. He was also the political editor for McClatchy Newspapers, which owns The Sacramento Bee and other newspapers across the country.
Jacobs is survived by his wife, Carol Brydolf, and their two children Max, 15, and Marguerite, 13.
Those attending the service at Congregation Bet Haverim are welcome to bring a vegetarian dish for the Meal of Consolation immediately after. The Sacramento Bee is arranging a second memorial service in Sacramento on June 15. The location and time of that service will be announced at a later date.
