William Clyde Alexander
William Clyde Alexander passed away on Nov. 4, 2004. He was born in San Jose on Feb. 22, 1922 to Clyde and Ellse Alexander, where he lived with his family until 1965, when they moved to Winters.
Mr. Alexander was a prominent Catholic, as well as an active Knight of Malta and past president of Serra International. He was also a member of the Society of California Pioneers.
In San Jose his occupation was building and designing custom homes, subdividing Western Gardens in the Willow Glen area, and, with his friend Robert Dodge, in the exclusive Linden Oaks subdivision. At his ranch in Winters, Mr. Alexander grew and packed cherries, apricots, peaches and prunes. He was a board member of the California Apricot Producers and a long-time member of Blue Anchor and Sunsweet. A pioneer in the dried fruit industry, many of his innovations have been adopted industry-wide. He was also the first to sun-dry tomatoes in California on a commercial basis.
In 2001, he sold the ranch property in Winters and moved to Carmel Valley with Catherine, his wife of 59 years. His sister, Patricia, also lives there.
Bill loved to have large family dinners, especially at the ranch, with a roaring fire going in the fireplace. He was a great Cal fan, especially of the football program, and his family and friends are sorry he didn't get to enjoy this Cal season.
He attended Bellarmine College Prep, University of Santa Clara, and studied in the Architectural School at the University of California at Berkeley. He also served in the Marine Corps during World War II.
Mr. Alexander is survived by his five children, Leslie and her husband, Stan, Lindsey and her husband, Steven, Lorie and her husband, Michael, Matthew and his wife, Penelope and Lisa and her husband Howard. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Carmel Mission.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Bellarmine College Prep or Santa Clara University, in his name. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Davis Memorial Chapel, 609 Main Street, Watsonville, CA 95076.
NICHOLS
Joe Nichols
Joe Nichols of Redding died at his residence Tuesday, June 21, at age 68.
Mr. Nichols was born Jan. 18, 1937 in Sacramento. He was a teacher in sales/retails and moved to Shasta County from Woodland in 1999. He was also affiliated with the Army, Lauderbacks, Northern Free Trappers and Neighborhood Church in Redding.
Survivors include Mr. Nichols' wife, Susan Nichols and his son, Kenneth Nichols, both of Redding; his daughter, Marcia Pope, and his brother, Robin Nichols, both of Chico; his sister, Jane Brumley, of Gridley; and three grandchildren.
Services: A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, June 27 at 10:30 a.m. at Neighborhood Church, 777 Loma Vista Dr. in Redding, with Pastor Don Claspill officiating.
McDonald's Chapel in Redding is assisting the family with arrangements.
BYRNES
Hattie Lee Byrnes
Hattie Lee Byrnes died Saturday, March 29, 2003 in Woodland.
Born April 11, 1925, in Phoenix City, Ala., Mrs. Byrnes had been a Yolo County resident for 35 years.
Survivors include her daughters, Barbara Cuilla and husband Frank, Patricia Lyons and husband Bob, and Shirley Bennett and husband Casey; son, Edwin Byrnes III and wife Gloria; sister, Betty Thrower of Cataula, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Edwin Albert Byrnes.
Arrangements are under the direction of River Cities Funeral Chapel of West Sacramento.
Services: The funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3, at River City Funeral Home of West Sacramento, with a graveside following the service at Monument Hill Memorial Park, Woodland.
RAMIREZ
Marina Azevedo Ramirez
Marina Azevedo Ramirez died in Woodland Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004 at age 65.
Mrs. Ramirez was born Dec. 15, 1938 in Woodland to the late Francisco and Adelaida Azevedo and was a lifelong resident of Yolo County. She was employed by Yolo County as a court clerk for 23 years and after retiring she worked as an office manager for Ramirez Construction. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the Young Ladies Institute and co-founder of Folklorico Latino de Woodland.
Survivors include Mrs. Ramirez's husband of 46 years, Kenneth of Woodland; daughters Celia and Teresa Ramirez, both of Sacramento; sons Carlos, Gabriel and Andy Ramirez, all of Woodland, and Luis Ramirez of Carmichael; brother Marcelino Azevedo of Woodland; sisters Lillian Gonzalez of Watsonville, Alice Barrera, Hope Argumedo, Lola Castillo and Angie Vidales, all of Woodland; aunts Chole Villa of Woodland and Lenore Azevedo of Colusa. She is also survived by three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, as well as numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Ruben Azevedo, Frank Azevedo and Laurence Azevedo.
The family requests memorials in Mrs. Ramirez's name be directed to Folklorico Latino de Woodland Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 2377, Woodland, 95776.
Services: A vigil service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 301 Walnut St., Woodland. A mass of Christian burial is scheduled for noon Saturday, Sept. 4 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church with interment to follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Woodland. A gathering to celebrate Mrs. Ramirez's life will be held after the interment at the Willow Oak Hall, 17535 County Road 97, Woodland following the services. Evergreen Funeral Services of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.
RAMON
Jose Ramon
Jose Ramon died at Woodland Memorial Hospital Wednesday, June 15, 2005 at age 85.
Mr. Ramon was born March 29, 1920 in Texas. He had been a Yolo County resident for one year. He was a retired laborer.
Services: Respecting the wishes of Mr. Ramon, no services are scheduled. Interment will be at Woodland Cemetery. North Sacramento Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
YOUNAN
Rouel Yosif Younan
Rouel Yosif Younan passed away of natural causes on May 11, 2001 in Davis. Born on July 1, 1955 in Baghdad, Iraq, he was 45 years old.
Mr. Younan immigrated to the United States at the age of 16, and was originally a resident of Chicago, Illinois. He moved to Modesto in 1976, where he lived until 1995 when he moved to Winters with his family. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science at Stanislaus State University, and was working toward his master’s degree in business administration (M.B.A.) at National University in Sacramento at the time of his passing. He held a variety of jobs in Northern California, but was mostly recently a plant manager for G.K.N. Interlake for the last two years. He was a member of the Assyrian Church of Modesto, and enjoyed golfing, fishing and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Ann, of Winters; daughters, Anntonette, Ashurina and Alyssa, all of Winters; sister and brother-in-law, Henry and Mariam Bakus of Modesto; brother, Ashoor Younan of Modesto; numerous relatives, including aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A visitation was held for Mr. Younan at the Lakewood Funeral Home in Hughson on Monday, May 14, from 4-8 p.m. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, May 15, at 10 a.m. at the Assyrian Church of the East of Modesto. Burial followed at Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson.
Remembrances may be made in Mr. Younan’s name to the American Heart Association.
YOUNG
Florence Hill Young
Born: April 15, 1920 in Grimes, Ca.
Passed away: April 22, 2004 at Colusa Regional Medical Center.
Age 84.
A lifelong Colusa County resident.
Her family was involved in farming, having established themselves in the Grimes area in the 1870's. She was the youngest child of Lillie Fruchtenicht Hill and Rollie E. Hill. She attended Grand Island Elementary School and graduated from Pierce High School in 1938. She marriage Arnett Young in 1939. She worked for the Pierce School District as a cook, a store clerk at Stinson's Drug Store and for many years at Breits in Woodland. Florence was an artist in most practical of ways and found beauty in simple things. She always had a wonderful garden; she made quilts for many of her grandchildren, and was an extraordinary cook. She was very proud of her meals that she made for the students of the school district as well as the elaborate pies and bread she made for her family. She lived very independently and modestly, and counted her family and friends as her most valuable possessions. She charmed her family with her lively stories and good cheer.
Survivors include his sons, Worth Young and his wife Suzanna of Aptos, Ca., Ken Young and his wife Joanne of Wasilla, Alaska.; daughters, June Wilkins and her husband Gary of Fort Jones, Ca. and Mary Charter and her husband Raymond of Arbuckle, Ca.; sisters, Elna Stevenson of Davis, Ca. and Cecilia Ettl of Yuba City, Ca.; grandchildren, Mary Eicher, Arnett Young, Sara Williams, Autumn Wallace, Rodley Wilkins, Catrina Firman, Heather Wilkins, Lillie Rabena, Ellen Voorhees, Halbert Charter and James Young; and great-grandchildren, Crystal Dau, David Dau, Janna Dau, Carrielee Wilkins, Kevin Wilkins, Chelsea Wilkins, Gail Downey, Brittany Maynard, Christopher Maynard, Sadie Eicher, Jack Eichert, Alexis Williams, Mary Nicole Williams, Shane Williams, Mitch Young, Jake Voorhees, Riley Voorhees, Luke Voorhees, Aiden Charter, Halle Charter, Daniel Rabena, Trevor Rabena and Ryne Rabena.
Florence is preceded in death by her husband Arnett Young who passed away in 1952.
Graveside services will be Wednesday, April 28, 2004 at 10 a.m. at the Arbuckle Cemetery.
