Marjorie Ellen Hermle
Marjorie Ellen Hermle died Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at age 87.
Born April 12, 1917, in Gridley, Mrs. Hermle had been a Yolo County resident for 15 years. She is the only daughter to Merl and Florence Criddle. In 1941 she marriage Clarence John Hermle. She was a native Californian residing in Gridley, Stockton, Rio del Mar Beach, La Jolla and most recently Indian Wells.
Survivors include her daughters, Ricke Ellis of Indian Wells, and Nancy Hermle of San Diego; brother, David Criddle and his wife, "sister" Ruth of Gridley; granddaughters, Nicole Fahrer and Caroline Farrar, both of Scottsdale, Az.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Hermle; daughter, Deidre Farrar; and brother, Lee Criddle.
The family requests memorials be directed to charity of donor's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Stricklin Snively Mortuary of Long Beach.
Services: Those family and friends, who wish to celebrate her life may join together at Shadowbrook Restaurant in Capitola, at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, June 27, 2004.
HUNGATE
Alice W. Hungate
A memorial service for Alice Wolcott Hungate will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Davis Community Church, 412 C St.
She died peacefully in the early morning of Jan. 3, 2000. Born on Feb. 21, 1911, in Pacific Grove, the first of three children of Oliver George Wolcott and Elva Howard, she was 88.
Her early years were spent in Lodi with many happy summer hours on the Howard ranch in Cloverdale. Later her family moved to Burlingame, where her father taught at the high school. She graduated from there in 1929 and from Stanford University in 1933, where both her parents were alumni.
At Stanford, she met Robert Edward Hungate and they were marriage on Feb. 3, 1933.
Alice and Bob moved to Austin, Texas, and the University of Texas in 1935, then to Pullman, Wash., and Washington State University in 1945. While in Pullman, Alice was a member of the Fort-nightly Club and Delta Gamma Alumni.
She then moved to Davis with Bob when he joined the faculty of UC Davis. In Davis she was an active member of the Genealogy Club, the International House, and with her husband, the English Speaking Union and Mariner's Group at Davis Community Church.
She first and foremost loved and supported her husband and children. She delighted in travel, the range of interesting people and foods the world offers, living for more extended time in England, Africa and New Zealand. She brought some of these countries home in furnishings and through gourmet cooking.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth, and brother, Howard.
She is survived by her husband, Robert E. Hungate of Woodland; three children, Robert W. Hungate of Wellesley Hills, Mass., and his wife JoAnne, Dan P. Hungate of Mercer Island and his wife Connie, and H. Nona Hungate of Oakland; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family has established the Alice Wolcott Hungate Scholarship Fund at Burlingame High School to annually award financial aid to a deserving female graduate of that school.

LEACH
Jane R. Leach (1 of 2)
Jane Rhoads Leach, a 71-year resident of Davis, died peacefully during the night of April 27, 2000, at her vacation home in LaSelva Beach.
Born Feb. 4, 1906, in Boone, Iowa, to Dr. Charles and Margaret Conn Rhoads, she was 94.
After receiving her elementary and secondary education in the Boone schools, she attended Iowa State University, where she majored in home economics and journalism and was affiliated with the Delta Delta Delta sorority.
Soon after earning her bachelor's degree, she boarded a train for California to marry her fiance, Lysle D. Leach, who had just completed his doctorate degree in plant pathology at Iowa State and had taken a faculty position at the University of California.
They were marriage in Berkeley on Aug. 1, 1928.
They lived in Berkeley until February 1929, when Lysle joined the department of plant pathology at the University Farm (now UC Davis).
They would remain Davis residents for the rest of their lives. Lysle died in 1987.
During the years they were raising their three children, she was a homemaker and a part-time reporter for The Davis Enterprise and The Sacramento Bee.
She was a member of Davis Community Church, served as a Girl Scout leader and was active in University Farm Circle, the Leisure Hour Club and the Prytanean Society at UCD.
Following World War II, when Lysle participated in the Marshall Plan and other international exchange programs, she and her husband traveled widely and lived for extended periods in Denmark, Ireland, Chile, Uruguay and Spain.
In 1963, Dorothy Briggs, Esther Wagner and Jane entered the business world by founding the Discoveries gift shop and creating a unique shopping experience in Davis.
She withdrew from partnership in 1968, following Lysle's retirement from the university, but she continued to use her creative talents and sewing ability to produce fabric crafts, which she sold to regional shops until her death.
She was a longtime member of Creators Unlimited, was an early board member of the Davis Art Center and served as a docent at the International House. For the past five years, she lived at the Covell Gardens retirement center.
She is survived by her three children, Joann Leach Larkey of Winters and her husband Dr. Richard Larkey, Douglas Leach of Orinda and his wife LaVerne, and Janet Leach Chapman of Davis; seven grandchildren, Diane Larkey Larson of Roseville and her husand Greg, Jefferson Larkey of Santa Cruz and his wife Barbara Piani, Kyle Leach of Nevada City and his wife Betsey, Katherine Leach Rauch of San Francisco and her husband William, Leslie Leach Miller of Olympia, Wash., and her husband Major Joseph Miller, M.D., Christy Chapman of Albuquerque, N.M., and Brenna Chapman of Davis; eight great-grandchildren; her sister, Betty Lee of Minneapolis, Minn.; and five nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service to be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, at Davis Community Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the charity of the donor's choice or to the Lysle Leach Memorial Fund at UCD, which was created to help plant pathology graduate students defray their expenses while attending scientific meetings.

MILLER
David Nelson Miller
David Nelson Miller died in Citrus Heights on May 3, 2004. He was 56 years old.
Born Feb. 24, 1948, in Kansas City, Mo., he attended C.K. McClatchy High School in Sacramento and UC Davis. He lived in San Francisco and New York City, but was a longtime resident of Sacramento.
A lifelong artist, he was also a carpenter and chef. His art had been exhibited numerous times in Sacramento, Chicago, San Francisco and New York City.
His family will remember him as a loving son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Marc Miller; and, his father, John Miller.
He is survived by his mother, Melba Miller of Citrus Heights; brother, John Miller and his wife Katherine of Davis; brother, Evan Miller of Elk Grove; and sister, Susan Miller of Davis.
He is also survived by two nephews, John and Andrew Miller of Davis; close family friends, Shelly Maita and her daughter Carly; uncles and aunts, Ed and Shirley Nelson of Lincoln, and Dick and Velma McGee of Sacramento; and, many loving cousins.
His family and friends will miss his wit, sense of humor, art, easy laugh and berets.
A private inurnment is planned for a later date at East Lawn Sierra Hills, 5757 Greenback Lane in Sacramento. A celebration of his life will be held in the near future.
HERGER
Frieda Rose Herger
Frieda Rose Herger of Madison died Monday, July 18, 2005 at age 86.
Mrs. Herger was born Sept. 4, 1918 in Switzerland. She had been a Yolo County resident for 75 years. She attended Gordon Elementary School. She was a homemaker, a member of St. Martin's Catholic Church and a charter member of their altar society.
Survivors include Mrs. Herger's daughter, Janet Penrose and her husband Robert of Woodland; her son, Walter "Jim" Herger and his wife Patti of Woodland; her grandchildren, Mark and Alison Herger, Corey, Lori and Nicholas Penrose; and her great-granddaughter, Karli Montgomery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest J. Herger and her son, Ernest Julius Herger Jr.
The family requests memorials in Mrs. Herger's name be directed to St. Martin's Catholic Church, East Grafton, Esparto, 95627.
Services: A vigil is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday, July 21 at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland. A graveside service is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 22 at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Woodland. McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
MICHAEL
Lawrence A. Michael
Lawrence A. Michael of Davis died on Feb. 24, 2002, in Sacramento. He was 78.
He was born on Jan. 13, 1924, in Davis to Fred and Marie Michael. A graduate of Davis High School, Michael attended UC Davis before enlisting in the Navy in World War II. During the war, he served on the USS Omaha in the Pacific.
After the war, he graduated from San Jose State University and began his career at the Westinghouse Corp. in Sunnyvale. He retired from the corporation's materials management marine division in 1986.
Michael, an avid golfer and San Francisco 49ers fan, is survived by his wife, Elsie Michael, and daughter, Laurie Michael.
A private service was held Monday, March 4, at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Los Altos.
