HILLIARD
James Owen Hilliard
James Owen Hilliard, a longtime resident of Davis and prominent businessman, died June 21, 2005, in Sacramento. He was 76 years old.
Friends are invited to a memorial service at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Davis Community Church, 412 C St. Inurnment will follow in Buffalo, Wyo.
Born Dec. 4, 1928, in Torrance, he spent 35 years in Davis, 32 of them as an insurance agent with State Farm Insurance.
Hilliard attended 13 elementary schools in California and graduated from Alhambra High School in Martinez. He later served in the U.S. Army Air Forces.
He was an active member and past president of both the Davis Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club of Greater Davis. Hilliard was perhaps best known for his annual appearance as a leprechaun at the Chamber's annual Crab Feed, which coincides with the celebration of St. Patrick's Day.
He had all the characteristics of a leprechaun: He was short, he was round, his eyes twinkled and his smile danced. And he sported a custom-made green, gold and white leprechaun's outfit that never failed to make everyone feel Irish, at least for the night.
Hilliard also distinguished himself as a tireless advocate for parking solutions in downtown Davis, and as a board member for Explorit Science Center and a founder of the Yolo Amateur Radio Society.
Because of his civic involvement, Hilliard was often in the news. He wanted to ensure that his name was spelled correctly, so he established a tradition of bribing Davis Enterprise photographers with a quarter each time he had his picture taken.
"Just make sure you get it right, " he'd say with a wink as he pressed 25 cents into the hands of a string of photographers over the years.
When he retired from State Farm in December 1993, he turned over his 6, 000 policy holders - then a record number for one agent in the greater Sacramento area - to other local State Farm agents.
After his retirement, he and his wife Marge spent a decade indulging their passion - worldwide travel - and keeping up with their active brood of four sons, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marge Hilliard of Grass Valley; and four sons, John Hilliard and his wife Joanne of York, Pa.; Jeff Hilliard and his wife Patty of Rocklin; Jim Hilliard Jr. and his wife Toni of Woodland; and Mark Hilliard and his wife Ellyn of Fair Oaks.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1131, Fairfax, VA 22038-1131; the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
