David Allen McKnight formerly of Highland County, Virginia, and most recently of Bobcaygeon, Ontario, Canada. David left us suddenly and peacefully on Tuesday, July 19th, 2005 in his 69th year. David grew up in Ohio. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University (B.A.) in Boston. His first job after attending Union Theological Seminary in New York City (M. Div.) was as a teacher in the 1960’s anti-poverty program in Harlem. One of David’s greatest road maps in life was the teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount…”Blessed are the poor…blessed are those who show mercy…blessed are the peacemakers. You are the salt of the earth! You are the light of the world!...love…forgive…judge not…seek and you will find.” For much of his working life David taught philosophy, religion and parapsychology at the community college level in Virginia. He introduced a Death and Dying course into the community college curriculum in the 1970’s. One of his greatest joys was doing remedial work, and teaching prisoners at Staunton Correctional Center in Staunton, Virginia. Some of David’s greatest gifts were being an enthusiastic teacher, an enabler of other people’s gifts, and a facilitator of students’ learning. He was dearly loved by his family and friends – his wife, Mary; brother, John McKnight from Evanston, Illinois; sister Kay Hubert from Shelby, Ohio; treasured in-laws; nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, and friends. David probably had more true friends than anyone else on the planet! We will miss his enthusiasm and warm hugs. There will be memorial services in Ontario, Ohio, and Virginia at later times where his family and friends can gather together to celebrate and share stories about his magnificent life! Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice or to the David Allen McKnight Memorial Scholarship Fund in Philosophy and Religion at Blue Ridge Community College, One College Lane, Weyers Cave, Virginia, U.S.A. 24486
