Mitchell Sharp - 03/22/2004
P.C., C.C. A passionate Canadian passed away on March 19, 2004, aged 92, from prostate cancer and the sequelae of a recent fall. Born in Winnipeg in 1911, one year after his parents Thomas and Elizabeth (Little) arrived from Scotland. At age 14, despite a full-time job, Mitchell continued his education, obtaining a B.A. at the University of Manitoba in 1934. During 1937 - 1938 while newly employed by James Richardson & Sons, he attended the London School of Economics. On his return, he applied his expertise in the grain trade for Richardson clients. He came to Ottawa in 1942 when offered a wartime job in the Department of Finance. Muriel Richardson, then President and CEO of James Richardson & Sons, understood his desire to stay in Ottawa after the war and he remained forever grateful to the Richardson family for their support. At the end of 1950, he was named Associate Deputy Minister in the Department of Trade and Commerce; from 1957 to 1958, he served as Deputy Minister. From 1958 to 1962, he re-entered the private sector as Vice President of the Toronto-based Brazilian Traction Light and Power Company. The voters in the riding of Eglington elected him to the House of Commons in 1963. He was first appointed to Cabinet as Minister of Trade and Commerce in 1963 and then became Minister of Finance in 1965. From 1968 to 1974 he served as Secretary of State for External Affairs and from 1974 to 1976 as President of the Privy Council and House Leader. Upon leaving politics in 1978 he became Commissioner of the Northern Pipeline Agency, a position he held for the next 10 years. Subsequently he worked as a Policy Associate at Strategicon. From 1993 to 2003, he served as Personal Advisor to the Prime Minister. Over the years, he received several honorary degrees from Canadian universities; an officer of the Order of Canada, he was elevated to Companion in 1999. Music sustained him throughout his life and he was very proud of the Diploma Honoris Causa he received from The Royal Conservatory of Music. He had an enduring zeal for and dedication to the National Arts Centre Orchestra as well as a deep admiration for it's Music Director Maestro Pinchas Zukerman, whom he numbered among his good friends. He is predeceased by his sister May and brother Harry; his first wife Daisy Boyd, and second wife Jeannette Dugal. He is survived by his wife Jeanne d'Arc (Labrecque), his son Noel (Norma), three grandchildren and five great-granddaughters; his cousin Marguerite (Rita) Sharp of Denny, Scotland; his niece Joy McDiarmid of Victoria Beach, Manitoba; niece Dianne Sharp and nephew Glen (Lucy) Sharp of St. Catharines, Ontario; in-laws, nephews and nieces of the Boyd and Dugal families and the Labrecque family. Sister-in-law Jacqueline Dugal will miss him. He will be fondly remembered by Lawrence Holden of Abingdon, Virginia. He enjoyed a unique collegial relationship and close friendship with the Right Honorable Jean Chretien that spanned more than 40 years. Gratitude is expressed to David Leighton, Chairman of the Board, and Peter Herrndorf, Director General and CEO of the National Arts Centre, both of whom understood his dedication to the NAC. He remained lifelong friends with his political supporters and with colleagues from Western Canada. He will be missed by the members of the Round Table, with whom he enjoyed weekly discussions on different topics at the Rideau Club for the past 20 years. He never missed an opportunity to express his opinion. Visitation will be held at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa, on Friday, March 26, 2004 from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, Sparks Street, on Saturday, March 27 at 11 a.m. The family wishes to thank everyone for the caring messages and bouquets received. They would also like to thank the physicians and nurses at the Ottawa General Hospital and the Elisabeth Bruyere Health Centre for their excellent care. Peacefully in his sleep on April 17, 2004, at the Peter D. Clark Long Term Care Centre, aged 78 years. Loving husband of Phyllis (nee Loye). Left to mourn are his daughter Jane Shellnutt Eikov, Corning, New York; brother Ernest, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; sisters Reta Cormier and Eulah Martin (Roy), Halifax, Nova Scotia. Predeceased by a daughter Lynn, a son-in-law Barry Eikov, a brother Roy, and an infant brother Douglas. A special thank you to Graham's extended family at the Peter D. Clark Centre (Bungalows) for their extraordinary and loving care during the past year. Raye (née Friberg) Singerman - 04/16/2004
Retired Teacher, Philemon Wright High School passed away with her family by her side on Friday, April 16. She is survived by her devoted husband of 46 years, Sydney. Cherished mother of Felice (Jeffrey), Barbara (Joel) and Aviva (Seymour) and grandmother of Jessica, Erin, Joshua, Jordan, Ross, Michael, Jason, Zachary, Mitchell and Matthew. Also survived by her very dear sisters, Mary Geller (Robert), Toby Tantleff (Barry) and Molly Mintz (Jim). Sister-in-law of Irene and the late Jack Waxman. Funeral will be held at the Jewish Memorial Chapel, 1771 Cuba Avenue, Ottawa on Monday, April 19 at 2 p.m. followed by burial in the Jewish Cemetery, Osgoode. Shiva to be held from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at 42 Saddlebrook Street. A special thank you to the staff of Elisabeth Bruyere Centre, 5B. Kathleen (Kaye) Kelsey Smith - 04/04/2004
Our dear friend, Kaye, quietly passed away, Saturday, April 3, 2004 in the Ottawa General Hospital. Kaye was born in Perth, but lived most of her life in Ottawa where she pursued a long career at National Defence until her retirement. Kaye, and only child was family to many, especially to her dear friend, Martha Schultz, who predeceased her. She will greatly missed by the many people whose lives she touched by her uncommon kindness and concern and by her family and friends in the United Kingdom and abroad. There were many things dear to Kaye; her support of St. John the Evangelist Church, her love of animals, her skill at sewing and her endeavours to show her deep commitment and caring for others. Her sense of humour was a joy to all who knew her. Many thanks to the caring staff at the Palisades Retirement Home and the Ottawa General Hospital. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Wednesday, April 7th from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday, April 8th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A Memorial Service will follow in the chapel at 1 p.m. Interment will occur in Perth at a later date. In Ottawa on Saturday, April 3, 2004. Born in Matisi, Latvia, February 27, 1922. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Lidija, in 2001, and son, Egils Rebane, in 1998. Survived by: daughter Anna Sops and her partner Larry Palmer of London; son Peter Sops, his wife Karen, and granddaughters Janis and Lori of Orleans; daughters IIze Sops, her husband Lee Tripple and granddaughter Katrina of Kingston; and daughter-in-law Marjorie Rebane and granddaughter Aleksandra of Thornhill. Memorial Service to be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Sarnia, Ontario on May 8, 2004 at 10am, with Interment to follow. Arrangements in care of the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry. At the CHVO de Hull on Easter morning, Sunday Aprill 11, 2004 in his 82nd year after a painful battle with cancer. Beloved husband of Marcelle St.Amour. Loving father of Michèle (Brian O’Connor), Susie (Dave Oslund), Lise and Danny (Mary Coyle). Cherished grand-papa of Jody, Tahlia, Kaylah, Meagan, Kirsten and Gabrielle. Dear brother of Jeanne. Son of the late Napoleon St.Jean and Amanda Gauthier. Predeceased by siblings Paul, George, Nancy, Lawrence, Simone, Hector, Adélard, Aline, Valmore, Rose, Ernie and Lucille . Art was the postmaster of Low, PQ for 30 years and the village grocer for 47 years. A life member of the Lions Club as well as the Royal Canadian Legion. As per Art’s wishes there will be no visitation. Outre sa communauté, Soeur Diana laisse dans le deuil Frère Adrien, f.i.c.., Soeur Alberta, s.s.c.j., Soeur Julia, s.s.c.j., Soeur Adrienne, s.s.c.j., ainsi que plusieurs neveux et nièces. Elle fut prédécédée par Odilon (feu Oriana Benoît), Paul-Henri (feu Gertrude Lacoursière) et Charles-Auguste (feu Monique Proulx). Cherished "Gram" of Angus Topshee (Audrey) and Dugald Topshee (Dianne): Erin Dilorento (Steve), Shelley MacDonald (Chris), Joanna Topshee and great-grandmother of Serena, Amy, Hannah, Luca and Zoe. Also survived by her sister-in-law and dear friend Mary McElligott. Predeceased by brothers Ray, Leonard, Mercier and sister Eunice. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, 194 Fourth Avenue (at Percy Street) on Wednesday, April 7 at 12noon. WW II Veteran, Past President of Prisoner of War Association (Ottawa) and Greely & District Legion #627, Russell Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. No. 479 Peacefully in hospital on Easter Sunday, April 11, 2004 in his 80th year. Beloved husband of the late Gladys. Survived by grandchildren Vickey Proulx, Melody, Eric and Stephane Vernier and one great-grandchild Mathieux; step-daughter Clarice Proulx, sister Louise Lacroix, brother Romeo and sons Serge and Jean-Pierre. Predeceased by a daughter, Nicole. Born in Vankleek Hill as a farm boy, John went on to join the Canadian Armed Forces in 1940. While in England as an amateur boxer, he won the 2nd Division Light/Heavyweight Championship. Captured in the Dieppe Raid in 1942, John then spent 2 years and 8 months as a P.O.W. Upon his return home, he had an active and varied career including: Officer with Montreal Police Force, patient Caregiver at N.D.M.C., Head of Security for General Investigations and a dog breeder. Active member and Elder at Bethany United Church and Past President of the Top Generation Club. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa on Thursday, April 15 from 7 to 9pm with a Legion Service being held at 7pm followed by a Masonic Service in the Chapel at 8pm. Fred served in the Merchant Navy from 1942-1944; he served with the GGFG overseas as a Lance Corporal from 1944 to 1946; Retired Director of the Air Transport Committee of the Canadian Transport Commission, Air Services Analysis Branch. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Joan and Earl McKeen and nephews Ron and Stuart McKee as well as his sister-in-law Marion (Cameron) Merkley and their children John, Christy, Robert and Ian and his Brother-in-law Ken Barber. passed away peacefully with all her family by her side, after a courageous battle with cancer, on Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at the age of 49. She was the loving wife of Pierre (Pete) St-Jacques and cherished mother of Wendy (Jason Carbonette), Marsha and Josh. Will be dearly missed by her grandchildren Ryan, Dylan and Selena. She is survived by her parents Joachim and Marcelle Bergeron, her brothers and sisters; Ghislain (Chantal), Louise (Daniel Desjardins), Roger (Charlene), Michel (Marianne), Denise (Francois Guenette), Francine (Francois Berube) and Donald (Barb). Dear sister in-law of Diane (Jacques Patry), Michel (Kathy) and Nicole (Steve Williams). Fondly remembered by her many loving nieces and nephews.
