Rhodena Maria Armendinger
67, Sydney
Rhodena Maria Armendinger, 67, Sydney, died May 8, 1999, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Murray, Victoria County, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Mary Ann (MacLeod) Keigan. She was employed with Timothy Eaton Company in Toronto as well as various other fields. She then moved to Florida where she enjoyed her retirement. Rhodena was very fond of Scotch music and square dancing.
Surviving are daughters, Debbie Hawley, Dale McDonald, Toronto; son, Brad LeFletche, California; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Frank; brothers, Ronald, John, Gordon, Norman; sister, Mary Buchannan; one sister, and two brothers in infancy.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Dignity Cremation Services, Halifax.
Donations to the Palliative Care unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Clara E. Bain
88, Waterloo, Ont.
Clara Bain, 88, of Waterloo, Ontario, formerly of North Sydney, died Friday, May 7, 1999, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Waterloo.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late George and Maude (Jillett) Young. She was a longtime member of St. Aidan’s Church Choir and Guild in Westmount.
She is survived by two daughters, June (Kenneth) Rose, Westmount, Marilyn (Edwan) Leon, Waterloo; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband Frank MacDonald; second husband, Russell; daughter, Joan; two sons, Murray, Clarence; one great-granddaughter; two great-grandsons; two brothers, Percy and Jack.
A memorial service will be held in St. Mark’s Church Saturday, May 22, at 1 p.m. with Rev. James Purchase officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Funeral arrangements made under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Aidan’s Church, Westmount, or charity of choice.

Agnes Bonnell
Westmount
A well known and eldest resident of Westmount, Agnes Bonnell, of Monteith Avenue, passed away Saturday, May 8, 1999, at her residence.
Born in Sydney in 1906, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Annie (MacLeod) McGowan.
She was a member of Westmount United Church, a life member of the UCW. She was a loving mother of sons, Harvey (Rose), Sydney, Owen (Anne), Aubrey (Edwina), Roy (Fern), all of Westmount, Donnie (Anne), Meadows Road; daughters, Colleen (Harry Baigent), Truro, Anna (George MacGillivray), Westmount; and a special granddaughter, Nancy, who resided with her. She was the loving grandmother to 20 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Weston McGowan, Sydney; sister-in-law, Marian McGowan, Sydney; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harvey in 1985; granddaughter, Pam Bonnell; one great-grandson in infancy; brothers, Albert, Robert and Owen; sisters, Louise Perry, and Jean Anthony.
Visitation was held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Sunday 7-9 p.m. and will be held Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in the chapel Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Bernice Spracklin officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Palliative Care, VON or charity of choice.

Jacqueline (Boutilier) Dresher
59, Marion Bridge
Jackie (Boutilier) Dresher, 59, of Marion Bridge, Mira, died Saturday, May 8, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Ben Boutilier and Annie Payne who is a resident of Seaview Manor. Jackie’s career as a teacher began at Caledonia School and continued there until her retirement in 1972. A long time member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, and Friends of Seaview Manor, Glace Bay.
Survived by brothers, Bill (Shirley), Trout Brook Road, Marion Bridge, Roy (Donna), Glace Bay, Benjamin (Sara), Glace Bay; sisters, Marie (Mrs. Bernie MacInnis), Sanfield Road, Marion Bridge, Paula (Mrs. Frank MacLean), Glace Bay; 13 nieces and nephews; 8 grandnieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her husband Richard Dresher, Port Charlotte, Florida.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay on Wednesday, May 12, 1999, at 3 p.m. with Rev. Fev Arnold officiating. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements entrusted to Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, Glace Bay.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Mary’s Anglican Church Memorial Fund or Cape Breton Palliative Care Society, Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
May her soul be granted eternal rest.

Judina (Marshall) Poulette
53, Castle Bay
Judina (Marshall) Poulette, 53, of Castle Bay, died Saturday, May 8, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Irene (Paul) Marshall. She was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni.
Surviving are her husband Levi Noel Poulette; two daughters, Lauri-ann Poulette, Pamela Marie Poulette, both at home; three sons, Stephen, Eugene, and Levi Jamie, all at home; two sisters, Mary Theresa (Mrs. Martin Cremo), Castle Bay, Anita Marie Marshall, Castle Bay; survived by one brother-in-law, David Poulette.
She was predeceased by a sister Jean Catherine Poulette.
The late Mrs. Poulette will have visitation on Tuesday, May 11, 1999, after 7 p.m. at the family residence, 107 Shore Rd., Castle Bay. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Church with the Rev. Fred Morley officiating. Interment in the parish Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney.

Edna Gouthro
85, North Sydney
Edna Gouthro, 85, a resident of the Northside Community Guest Home, North Sydney, and formerly of 78 Main St., Sydney Mines, died peacefully on Monday, May 10, 1999, at the residence.
Born at Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late William and Anne (Baxendale) Morris. She was a member of Trinity Anglican Church and Trinity ACW. She served on the ladies auxiliary of Harbourview Hospital and was a member of the Cann Rebecca Lodge and the Sydney Mines Senior Citizen’s Club.
She is survived by two sons, G.L. Keith, North Sydney and Ellis M., Manitoba; five grandchildren, Michelle, Louise, Jeffrey, Brent and Gregory and eight great-grandchildren, all in Manitoba and Quebec.
She was predeceased by her husband, Peter, brother, Ellis Morris, her half-sister, Anne Eileen, her stepfather, George Ives and several stepbrothers and stepsisters.
At Edna’s request there will be no visitation or flowers. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 2 p.m. in Trinity Anglican Church with the Rev. Brenda Drake officiating. Burial under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home will be in Trinity Cemetery, Shore Road, Sydney Mines.
Memorials donations may be made to the Trinity Anglican Church Roofing Fund.

Laughlin Anthony MacDonald
94, Sydney
Laughlin Anthony MacDonald of 70 Matilda St., Sydney, died peacefully, Monday, May 10, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Louisbourg, he was the son of the late Roderick Joseph and Mary Agnes (Gillis) MacDonald. He was employed for 48 years with the Sydney and Louisbourg Railway, retiring in 1970. He then worked for five years at the Ashby Fire Station. He was an original member of the Whitney Pier Credit Union.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary (Richard) Dobson, Sydney, Sr. Mary Michael of the Precious Blood, OCD, (Catherine), Ontario, Theresa, Sydney; four sons, Anthony, Sydney, Lauchie, Dartmouth, Joseph (Anna), Judique, Martin (Wendy), Sydney; two sisters, Margaret (Mrs. John Neil Campbell), Sydney and Sr. Teresa, CND, Sydney; five grandchildren, Richard, Julia, Daniel, Alexander and Kayleigh; four step grandchildren, Derek, Rodney, Curtis and Tiffany and numerous nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by three sisters, Christina (Mrs. Lawrence Young), Quincey, Mass., Mary (Mrs. Joe MacNeil), Kirkland Lake, Ont., Sr. Catherine MacDonald, CND, Sydney; five brothers, Michael, James, Joseph R. and Allan, all of Sydney, John, Sacramento, Calif.
Visitation for the late Mr. MacDonald will take place today (Tuesday) from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Holy Redeemer Church with the Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to Saint Vincent de Paul Society.

Winston C. MacLeod
59, Windosr, Ont.
Winston MacLeod, our dear brother passed away suddenly, Thursday, April 15, 1999, at the age of 59 years in Windsor, Ont.
He leaves to mourn sisters, Florence (Allison MacMillan), Freda MacAdam, Evelyn MacNeil, Doris (Edgar MacKinnon); brothers, C.L. (Katherine), St. Catharines, Calder (Ruth), Sudbury; companion, Geraldine Trigg.
Predeceased by parents Alexander (Catherine Stowe) MacLeod, brothers, Lorne, Ralph, Allister, sisters, Lucy and Elsie.
Cremation took place. Anderson Funeral Home officiated, Windsor, Ont.
Rest in Peace.

Monica (Campbell) McDonald
83, Halifax
Monica (Campbell) McDonald, 83, of Halifax, formerly of Glace Bay, died, Sunday, May 9, 1999, in the QEII Health Sciences Center, Halifax.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary (MacNeil) Campbell. She graduated from Mount Saint Vincent University in 1936 and lived most of her life in Glace Bay where she was very active in the community.
She is survived by daughter, Joan, Thunder Bay, Ont.; sons, Alan, Gregory, Halifax; sister, Camilla Bishop, Yarmouth; five grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Joseph A. MacDonald, son, Paul, sisters, Tina, Margaret, brothers, Joseph, Malcolm.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary’s Basilica. Interment will be held in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Glace Bay at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Dignity Cremation Services, Halifax.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

Raymond B. (Eggo) McIsaac
37, Glace Bay
Raymond B. (Eggo) McIsaac, 37, of 17 Hill St., Glace Bay, passed away Sunday, May 9, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Mora (Fitzgerald) and Raymond McIsaac. He was a member of St. Leo’s Church, Glace Bay. Ray was employed with the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (Water Department) for the past seven years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and loved the outdoors. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for his generosity and his willingness to lend a helping hand.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Cindy (Byrne); son, Mark, at home and twin daughters, Miranda and Marissa, also at home; brothers, Ron (Susan), Greenwood, N.S., Paul, at home, Glace Bay, Steven, Calgary, Alta.; sisters, Cathy and Lynn (Darrell) Roberts, both of Kelowna, B.C. Also surviving are numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Raymond was predeceased by grandparents, Thomas and Gertie Fitzgerald and Mr. and Mrs. Peter McIsaac, New Waterford.
Visitation for the late Mr. McIsaac will be held in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, today (Tuesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in St. Leo’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Paul McGillivray officiating. Cremation to follow.

Pain fled as he trod heaven’s shore;
It left him at peace and rest.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Children’s Wish Foundation are suggested as an expression of sympathy.

Judina (Marshall) Poulette, 53, of Castle Bay, died Saturday, May 8, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Joan Minto (Shaw) Primmer
Alberta
Joan Minto Primmer (nee Shaw), passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on Tuesday, May 4, 1999, after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Joan was born in Edmonton on Dec. 31, 1947.
Joan is survived by her loving husband, Kevin and their son, Kevin. Joan is also survived by her parents, Bill and Anna Shaw, Edmonton; her sister, Nadine, Edmonton; her aunts, uncles and cousins and dear friends.
Joan was dearly loved and will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her. Joan seemed to have a special place in the hearts of her working companions.
Following Joan’s wishes for cremation a memorial service was held from Sunny Brook United Church, Saturday, May 8, 1999, at 1 p.m. with Rev. Mark Green officiating. Cremation arrangements in care of Eventide Funeral Chapels, Red Deer Ltd.
If friends so desire memorial contributions may be made to the Red Deer Regional Hospital, Palliative Care Unit 37.

Dorothy Emma Stuckless
93, Sydney
Word has been received of the death of Dorothy Emma Stuckless, 93, in Vancouver on Wednesday, April 7, 1999.
Dorothy lived in Sydney with her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Purchase, and attended Whitney School, Sydney Academy and the Empire Business College. She was a member of Trinity United Church and the John MacIntosh Unit of the UCW. She worked in Sydney for several years and also in New York and Toronto before making her home in Vancouver. Until recent years she was a frequent visitor to Sydney.
Burial of ashes will take place at a later date in Roberts Arm, Bay Roberts, Nfld.

Benjamin Thurbride
66, Alder Point
Benjamin Thurbide, 66, of Alder Point, died Monday, May 10, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Alder Point, he was the son of Margaret (Getto) Thurbide and the late Arthur Thurbide. He was employed with the Cape Breton Development Corp. until his retirement. He was a member of St. Anne’s Parish, Alder Point.
He is survived by his wife, the former Evelyn Leblanc; sons, Carl (Carol Ann), Elmer (Ruth Ann); daughters, Sylvia (Gordie) Power, Marie (Peter) Donovan, Brenda (Darryl) Finney; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; eight brothers and five sisters.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret, a son, George.
Visitation will take place Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis & Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Anne’s Church with Rev. Joe Gillis officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
