Catherine Mae Chiasson, 88, of The Cove, formerly of Centennial Drive, Sydney, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at the residence.
Born in Cheticamp, she was the daughter of the late John and Rosine (Romard) Chiasson, Cheticamp. She was a former member of St. Nicholas Parish, Whitney Pier. Her entire life revolved around her family, who will miss her very much.
She is survived by three daughters, Lorraine Manley, Sydney, Theresa Coole, Hamilton, Eileen (George) McLeod, Regina; one son, John J. (Kaye) Chiasson, Halifax; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, David, a sister, Mary Ann and a brother, Leo Lever.
The late Mrs. Chiasson will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Theresa’s Church with the Rev. Will MacPherson officiating. Interment in New Calvary Cemetery, Sydney.

Laughlin Anthony MacDonald
94, Sydney
Lauchlin Anthony MacDonald of 70 Matilda St., Sydney, died peacefully, Monday, May 10, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Louisbourg, he was the son of the late Roderick Joseph and Mary Agnes (Gillis) MacDonald. He was employed for 48 years with the Sydney and Louisbourg Railway, retiring in 1970. He then worked for five years at the Ashby Fire Station. He was an original member of the Whitney Pier Credit Union.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary (Richard) Dobson, Sydney, Sr. Mary Michael of the Precious Blood, OCD, (Catherine), Ontario, Theresa, Sydney; four sons, Anthony, Sydney, Lauchie, Dartmouth, Joseph (Anna), Judique, Martin (Wendy), Sydney; two sisters, Margaret (Mrs. John Neil Campbell), Sydney and Sr. Teresa, CND, Sydney; five grandchildren, Richard, Julia, Daniel, Alexander and Kayleigh; four step-grandchildren, Derek, Rodney, Curtis and Tiffany and numerous nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Agnes MacNeil and by three sisters, Christina (Mrs. Lawrence Young), Quincey, Mass., Mary (Mrs. Joe MacNeil), Kirkland Lake, Ont., Sr. Catherine MacDonald, CND, Sydney; five brothers, Michael, James, Joseph R. and Allan, all of Sydney, John, Sacramento, Calif. Visitation for the late Mr. MacDonald will take place Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Holy Redeemer Church with the Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to Saint Vincent de Paul Society.

Annie Hannah MacKenzie, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Albert Williams, passed away Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at Townsview Retirement Home, in her 102nd year.
Beloved wife of the late Daniel MacKenzie. Loving mother of Margaret and John McAdam, Toronto, Albert and Marie MacKenzie, Clementsport, N.S., Wilburn and Joan MacKenzie, Toronto, Mayme MacSween, Donkin, N.S., Harold and Teresa MacKenzie, Hamilton, Kay Sanford, Clementsvale, N.S., Frances Hunter, Donkin, N.S., Laura MacDougall, Hagersville, Thelma MacKenzie, Peterborough, Don and Dorothy MacKenzie, Hamilton, Bob and Jackie MacKenzie, Stoney Creek, Mary and Alfred Walsh, Dunnville. Dear grandmother of 36 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her son, Alec.
Visitation will be in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 15, 1999, in St. Lukes United Church, Donkin with the Rev. Jim Chisholm officiating. Interment in Donkin Cemetery.

Elizabeth MacKillop, passed away at the Lakeridge Health, Bowmanville, Ont., on Monday, May 10, 1999, in her 88th year.
Elizabeth, beloved wife of the late Fraser MacKillop; dear mother of Charles and his wife Mary, Ottawa, Theresa and her husband Sheldon Delvecchio, Whitby, Fraser and his wife Ann, Kingston and the late Earl. Loved mother-in-law of Bernadette MacKillop, Howie Center, N.S.; loving grandmother of Maureena, Gregory, Douglas, Kevin, Steven, Richard, Michael and Andrew; dear sister of Cecilia MacNeil, Beaver Cove.

Edward William Spencer
76, Bedford
Edward William Spencer, 76, Bedford, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax.
Ed was born on Sept. 30, 1922 in Sydney, N.S., where he resided with his family until the autumn of last year.
He was the youngest child of the late Edna Alice (Bezanson) and John Young Spencer. He was a devoted member of the United Baptist Church in Sydney where he was a deacon before his move to Bedford. He was employed by the Sydney Steel Corp., where he worked in the lab for many years. He loved spending his summers with his family at their bungalow in Northside East Bay.
He was a former member of Sydney’s Y’s Men’s Club, Sydney Curling Club and Nugget Investment Club. He also served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War.
He is survived by his wife, the former Norma MacLeod, Sydney; sons, Don (Kate), Bruce (Gina) and daughters, Sheila and Susan (Joe) McEvoy. He had six granddaughters and two grandsons who thought he was the kindest and best Grampy in the world.
The funeral will be held in Sydney, Friday, May 14, 2 p.m. at the United Baptist Church with the Rev. Willis Henderson officiating, assisted by the Rev. John Wilton, Birch Cove Baptist Church in Halifax.
Donations can be made to the United Baptist Church in Sydney, the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

Thomas Joseph (Joe) Arsenault

Joe Arsenault, 52, of Intercolonial Street, Sydney, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Lubin and Flora Belle (Arsenault) Arsenault. He was employed with the Sydney Steel Corp. for 16 years and will be dearly missed by his many friends at the French Club. He was an avid dart player.
He is survived by two sons, Brent and Justin, both of Sydney; his loving friend, Katherine Christie; one brother, Bernie (Barbara), Hills Road.
The late Mr. Arsenault’s visitation will be held today (Thursday), 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Immaculate Heart Church with the Rev. G. MacPherson officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Mae (McKillop) MacKinnon
93, Toronto, Ont.
Mae (McKillop) MacKinnon, 93, of Toronto, formerly of Glace Bay, passed away peacefully in Toronto, Ont. where she resided for the past number of years with her daughter, Connie Gullison.
Born in New Aberdeen, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary (O’Connell) McKillop. Many will remember Mae as an avid card player who enjoyed weekly club games.
She is survived by four daughters, Audrey (Rannie MacDougall), Toronto, Mary (Jack Stevens), Glace Bay, Connie Gullison, Toronto, Elizabeth (Adam Waldner), Toronto; two sons, Reginald (Mildred), Glace Bay, John (Rita), Toronto. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, John MacKinnon and one daughter, Florence (Mrs. Colin MacDonald), Sydney Mines.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 15 at 11 a.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Fr. Paul McGillivray officiating. Interment to follow in St. John’s Cemetery.
Joan Marie (Aucoin) McDaniel
55, Indiana Joan Marie (Aucoin) McDaniel, 55, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on May 9, 1999, in Riverview Hospital, Nobleville, Indiana, after a lengthy illness.
Born in New Waterford, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Leo and Sophie Aucoin formerly of King Street.
She is survived by one daughter, Kathy (John) Houghtalen, Victoria and Natalie; one son, David (Michelle) McDaniel, Zachery, Austin, and Kristen; also one sister, Edna (Joe) Boudreau, Sydney, N.S.; five brothers, Eddie, Brandford, Ont., Albert, Truro, N.S., Cyril, Whitehorse, Yukon, Georgie, Victoria, B.C., and David, Don Mills, Ont. Also several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Hughie, Russell, and Peter in infancy.
Joan was a loving mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed by her family.
No visitation rights by request. Funeral arrangements are by Randall and Roberts Funeral Home, Nobleville, Ind. Graveside burial prayers Wednesday, May 12 and will be conducted by Pastor Sharon Cheek, in Crown Land Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Cancer Society or the Lung Association in her memory.

Gladys Elizabeth Allen
90, North Sydney
Gladys Elizabeth Allen, 90, a resident of the Northside Guest Home, North Sydney died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at the guest home.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late John and Ellen (Purchase) Voutier. She was employed at one time as a bookkeeper with Brennan’s Wholesale, North Sydney. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney and at one time was active with the ACW in the church.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Eldon Allen, one sister, Dora Landsdowne, three brothers, Frank, Roy and Gordon.
No visitation by request. Funeral service for the late Mrs. Allen will take place Sunday 3 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with the Rev. Jack Wainwright officiating. Burial to follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney.
Isaac James Barron
83, Ingonish Harbour
Isaac James Barron, 83, of Ingonish Harbour passed away Thursday, May 13, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Ingonish, he was the son of the late John and Lizzie (Howley) Barron. He was a member of St. Peter’s Parish, Ingonish Beach. He worked as a lobster fisherman in his earlier years until he was employed with the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, retiring in 1980. Besides his love for his faith, he loved to hunt, trap and spend a lot of time in the highlands. He was an avid outdoorsman. Isaac was a wonderful father, grandfather, friend and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by three daughters, Marion, Dartmouth, Helen (Clifford), Sydney, Margie (Chuck), Eastern Passage; four sons, John (Sharon), Lawrence (Maurina), Jerry (Janette), Phillip (Kay), all of Ingonish; two sisters, Ollie (Mrs. Russell MacPherson), Toronto, Helen, Sydney. Also survived by a special friend, Kim Beahn and 20 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Anne Laracy, one grandson, James, one sister, Katie and brothers, Andrew, Burt, Ronald, Theodore and Patty.
The late Mr. Barron will have visitation today (Friday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Peter’s Church, Ingonish Beach with the Rev. John Morrison officiating. Burial in St. Peter’s Parish Cemetery.

Wendell Louis Bonnar, 75, of 1 Crescent St., Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 13, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born at Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Daniel and Levina (Bonner) Bonnar. He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines. He was employed with Devco for 37 years, retiring in 1978.
He is survived by his wife, the former Ethel McMullin; five sons, Brian (Eileen), Daniel, John (Gloria), George (Linda), Robert, all of Sydney Mines; two sisters, Sadie Vickers and Louise Prince, both of Sydney Mines; two brothers, James (Betty) and Alex (Barbara), both of Sydney Mines; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Mary and Jessie and two brothers, Dan and George.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held at a later date.

Jessie Margaret McKay, 92, of The Cove Guest Home, Sydney, formerly of New York, died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at the home.
Born at New Campbellton, Victoria County, she was the daughter of the late Neil and Annie Jane (Lamb) McKay. She was an adherent of St. Andrew’s United Church, Sydney. Jessie worked as a personal care worker in the United States. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by a cousin, Hazel Ferguson.
She was predeceased by sisters, Dolena MacKenzie, Dorcas MacKinnon, Mary Johnson, Sadie Dukes, Nellie Motherall and a brother, Tom McKay.
Visitation will be held at Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines, Sunday from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Donald MacGuire officiating. Burial in St. James Cemetery, Big Bras d’Or.
