77, Sydney
John Howard (Red Jack) MacLean, 77, of MacLean Street, Sydney, passed away Wednesday, June 9, 1999, in the DVA unit, Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Jim and Myriah (Petrie) MacLean. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Canadian Army. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 128, Whitney Pier. He worked at the Sydney Steel Plant, outside mechanical, retiring after 42 years service. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish.
He is survived by his wife, the former Theresa Stevens; one daughter, Ann Marie Kwok, Vancouver; four sons, John (Lorna), Barry (Joy) and Ralph (Mary), all of Sydney, Owen (Lynn), Brampton, Ont.; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Rose Robertson, Sydney; one stepsister, Eunice Michalsky, Etobicoke.
He was predeceased by one son, Kevin, one daughter, Sandra in infancy, one sister, Marguerite, two brothers, Ralph and Tom.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass in Holy Redeemer Church Friday, 11 a.m. with the Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
Sherman Sutton
54, Glace Bay
Sherman Sutton, 54, of 95 Connaught Ave., Glace Bay, died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Alton and Glady (Payne) Sutton. He was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay. While in Toronto, Ont., he was employed with the Canadian Automotive Warehouse, and later he returned to Glace Bay to open his own Submarine Shop in New Waterford until he closed do to illness.
Survived by his wife, Josephine (Bone) Sutton, Glace Bay; brother, Alton Jr., Ottawa; sister, Ila MacMullin, Bedford, N.S.; sons, John, at home, Michael, St. Catharines, Ont.; one grandson, Bradley.
Their will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 12, 1999, at 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay, with Rev. Margaret Collons officiating. Burial will be held at a later date.

John Carmel Vassallo, 78, a resident of Ball’s Creek died Wednesday, June 9, 1999 at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Frank and Sarah (MacPhee) Vassallo. He was employed as a carpenter all of his life. He was veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Canadian Army. He was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, Frenchvale; lifetime member Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 19, North Sydney and a lifetime member of the Atlantic Farmers Co-Op.
Surviving are seven sons, Michael, Edmonton, Alta., John (Audrey), Montreal, Frank (Cheryl) and Joe (Carmella), both of Ball’s Creek, Bernie (Joanne), Dingwall, Robert (Caroline), Ball’s Creek, Patrick (Brenda), North Sydney; six daughters, Peggy (Mrs. Jackie Morrison), Dingwall, Carm, at home, Mary (Mrs. Herman Rudderham), Ball’s Creek, Anne Marina, Mira, Lorraine (Mrs. Wilfred Pentecost), Theresa (Mrs. John Ferguson), both of Ball’s Creek; 45 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Greg (Rosalie), Dartmouth, Earl, Halifax; two sisters, Mary MacPherson, Redondo, California and Patsy MacNeil, Dominion.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ann (Gelsinen) Vassallo;, three brothers, Frank, Ignatius and Bernard and one sister, Lorraine.
Visitation 7- 9 p.m. today (Thursday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass Friday 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Frenchvale with the Rev. Paul Abbass officiating. Burial to follow in the parish Cemetery.
Ida Gertrude Austin

Ida Gertrude Austin, 86, Truro, and formerly of Kentville, died Thursday, June 10, 1999, in the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro.
Born in Skye Glen, Inverness County, she was a daughter of the late James and Lavinia (Smith) Austin. She was a member of the First United Church, Truro; St. Paul and St. Stephen United Church, Kentville, and a member of the Christian Women’s Club. She was a teacher in Kings County for many years, she loved teaching and people. She was very active in many groups in her community and was honoured by the Province of Nova Scotia for her community work. She was well known as an effective worker for the Conservative Party in Kings County.
She is survived by brothers, Clair and Hugh, both of Skye Glen, Norman, Truro, Thomas, Sudbury, Ont.; sisters, Ella MacDonald, Beatrice McPherson and Isobel Scammell, all of Truro; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers, Smith, David, J.D., Earl and Henry, sisters, Florence Drake, Lottie Cook and twin, Bessie Fraser.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh, N.S. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Mabou-Hillsborough United Church with Rev. Don Willmar and Rev. Anne McKnight officiating. Burial in the Elmwood Cemetery, Hillsborough.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Elmwood Cemetery Fund, Whycocomagh or the Elm Grove Cemetery Fund, Kentville.

Theresa Eileen Cooke, 53, of 11A Park St., Dominion, passed away Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John James and Lorena (Spencer) MacDonald. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport. Theresa was a member of the Ladies Sandbar Dart League in Dominion.
She is survived by daughter, Valerie (Mrs. Chad Gale), Oromocto, N.B. and son, Billy, at home; brothers, Bobby (Rosalie) MacDonald, John William (Dookie) and Johnny (Cookie), all of Glace Bay; sisters, Rose (Mrs. George Smith), Catheline (Mrs. Cecil Cuprie), both of Dominion, Melisa (Honey) MacDonald, Glace Bay, Agnes (Mrs. Kenny Pastuck), New Waterford and Cecelia McPherson, Ontario. Also surviving are grandchildren, Daniel and Jeffery.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William and brother, Melvin MacDonald.
Visitation for the late Theresa Cooke will be held Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Bridgeport.

Daniel N. Mansfield, 66, a resident of Bras d’Or, died Thursday, June 10, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Florence, he was a son of the late William and Mae (Stubbert) Mansfield. In his earlier years he worked aboard the Great Lake boats. He was employed with Marine Atlantic in North Sydney until his retirement. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy (O’Toole); one daughter, Leona (Mrs. Eric Long), Bras d’Or; three sons, Mel (Vicki), Bras d’Or, Lawrence (Betty), Danny (Linda), both of North Sydney; one sister, Jean MacPhail, West Bay Road, Inverness County; three brothers, George (Becky), St. Catharines, Ont., Wilson (Phyllis), Florence, N.S., Peter (Sally), Bras d’Or; seven grandchildren, Billy Joe, Christa and Ryan, North Sydney, Erica and Kyle, Bras d’Or, Danny and Amanda, New Brunswick.
He was predeceased by brothers, Orville and William and by two brothers and two sisters in infancy.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. today (Friday) and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass Sunday 2 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or with the Rev. Martin MacDougall officiating. Burial to follow in the parish Cemetery.

Michael (Mick) McNeil
71, Glace Bay
Michael McNeil, 71, of 22 Roost St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully, Thursday, June 10, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Neil and Mary Ann McNeil. He along with his wife, Edith was the owner and operator of Mick’s Taxi until his retirement in 1981. He takes with him fond memories of all his employers and customers. He will be sadly missed by family and many friends.
A loving father to Michael (Pam) McNeil, Grande Cache; two daughters, Debbie (Lawrence) Nearing, Joanne (Joseph) Ogley, both of Glace Bay. A grandfather to eight, Lawrence, Cheryl, Laura Lee, Angela, Steven, Alexis, Neil, Jody and one great-grandchild, Brianna. He is also survived by one sister, Christine McArthur, Sydney.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, the former Margaret Heffernan and his second wife, the former Edith Addicott and five brothers and three sisters.
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be Monday, June 14 at 10 a.m. at St. Leo’s Church with Rev. Paul McGillvray officiating. Burial will follow in the parish Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Cancer Society, Palliative Care or a charity of choice.

Patricia Kathryn Piercy, 72, of Cottage Road, Sydney, passed away Thursday, June 10, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Patrick and Matilda (Robson) Hughes. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Sydney, retired training officer for St. John Ambulance, Sydney Cadet Division and president of R.C. Legion Ladies Auxiliary Branch 138, Ashby and an avid dart player at Sergeant’s Mess.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary (Ed) Surette, Sydney; two sons, Pat (Vonnie), Ontario and David (Bernadette), Sydney; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bernie (Karen) and Roger (Janice), California.
She was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred, one son, Wilfred Jr., sister, Mary DeMone and one brother, Jerry.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Friday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass in St. Joseph’s Church, Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
At her request a vase will be at the visitation for memorials of a single rose.

Christene A. (Gicco) Fownes following a long illness died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, June 2, 1999, surrounded by her loving caregivers and Jessie.
Born in Baddeck, she was the daughter of the late Archie and Mary (MacKenzie) Derguson. For many years she, her late husband and brother-in-law owned and operated the Inverary Inn in Baddeck.
Gicco is survived by her niece, Sharon Bartlett, Baddeck, Galen Thurber, Nepean, Ont., Duane Thurber, Baddeck; brothers-in-law, Chal Fownes, Baddeck, Albert Fownes, New Brunswick; sister-in-law, Margaret Fownes, Baddeck; nieces, Ginny Fownes, Minty Fownes; nephew, Graeme Fownes.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jamie, sisters, Isabel Bartlett and Frances who died in infancy.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, 1999 at Greenwood United Church, Baddeck, with the Rev. David Lutes officiating. Burial will be at St. Andrews Cemetery, Baddeck Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Victoria County Hospice Association, Greenwood United Church Memorial Fund or charity of one’s choice.

Albert James Harris, 69, of Gabarus, passed away Friday, June 11, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Richard and Rose (Brown Buffett) Harris. He was a retired fisherman.
He is survived by his wife, the former Lillian Stewart; one daughter, Kathy MacLellan, Westmount; two sons, Richard, Marion Bridge, Wayne, Sydney; three grandchildren, Sandra, Scott and Amanda; one great-grandchild, Evan; three sisters, Dawn Young and June Forrest, both of Westmount and Sheila Buffett, Sydney.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Lewis Crewe officiating. Interment in Lakeview Cemetery, Gabarus.
Violet Eichel MacDonald

Violet Eichel MacDonald, 91, of Carefield Manor, formerly of Brookland Street, Sydney, passed away on Friday, June 11, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Hants County, she was the daughter of the late Hugh and Christy (MacKinnon) MacDonald, Loch Lomond.
She worked in the U.S.A. for 50 years and was a valued member of the Needham Presbyterian Church. Since returning to Cape Breton she attended First United Church, Sydney and Loch Lomond United Church. She was a member of the Loch Lomond Heritage Association.
She was predeceased by foster brothers, Archie and Hector, foster sister, Effie Mary.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Mary MacDonald, Sydney and Effie (Angus) MacDonald, Loch Lomond.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service and committal service in the chapel Sunday at 3 p.m. with Rev. Doug Pilsworth and Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating. Interment in MacKeigan Cemetery, Loch Lomond.
Memorials may be made to charity of choice.
Catherine R. MacLeod (Tottie)
93, South Harvey
Catherine R. MacLeod (Tottie), 93, of South Harvey, died Thursday, June 10, 1999, at the Victoria Memorial County Hospital.
Born in North Gut, Victoria County, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Norina (Morrison) MacAulay. She was a member of Ephriam Scott Presbyterian Church, South Haven. She was the last surviving member of her family. Tottie was very active all her life in church and commulity affairs. She was a member od the choir for over 60 years and had recently received from the Lieutenant Governor and Mrs. Kinley a pin to commemorate her 75 years as a member of the Atlantic Missionary Society. Tottie was known for her kindness and hospitality to all.
She is survived her son, Robert A. MacLeod and his wife Joan; grandson, Robert Hugh MacLeod and wife Sharon; granddaughter, Shonah Smith; great-grandchildren, Robbie and Joal MacLeod; numerous nieces and nephews; grandnieces and nephews
She was predeceased by her husband, Duncan R. MacLeod, daughter, Sally MacLeod Smith, RN, five sisters and nine brothers and numerous nieces and nephews.
The body is resting at Ephriam Scott Presbyterian Church, South Haven, with visiting hours 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, June 12, 1999. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 13, 1999 at Ephriam Scott Presbyterian Church with Rev. Lloyd Murdock and Rev. Ian MacLeod officiating. Burial will be in Harbour New Cemetery.

Mary Lucy MacNeil, 81, of Breton Bay Nursing Home and formerly of Christmas Island, died Friday, June 11, 1999, at the residence.
Born in Bras d’Or, she was the daughter of the late Roderick J. and Elizabeth (MacInnis) MacNeil. She was a member of St. Barra’s Parish, Christmas Island and a former member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River.
She is survived by a sister, Catherine (Mrs. Bernard Brown), Sydney; a brother, Michael J. MacNeil, North Sydney; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Michael John MacNeil, two brothers, John Murdock and John Alex and a sister, Florence (Mrs. George Bush).
The late Mrs. MacNeil will have visitation Sunday after 2 p.m. in St. Barra’s Church, Christmas Island where the funeral mass will be held Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. J.A. MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish Cemetery, Christmas Island, under the direction of T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Donations may be made to the St. Barra’s Parish Fund.

William Ernest Martin, 79, of Alexandra Street, Prime Brook, passed away Friday, June 11, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Gabarus, he was the son of the late John and Mamie (MacIsaac) Martin. He was a retired mechanic, working at Crowdis Auto Service, Sydney. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Canadian Army, a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 12, Sydney.
He is survived by two daughters, Marie MacPherson, St. Thomas, Ont., Debbie (Roy) Ferguson, Caribou Marsh Road; two sons, Donald (Thelma), Westmount and Robert (Valerie), Sydney; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six sisters, Mamie Jones, Alberta, Cassie Clarke, Ontario, Mary Rochefort, Quebec, Irene Lynk, Big Ridge, Gladys Matthews, Campbelldale Road, Adeline Hollohan, Sydney; three brothers, John, Grand Mira, Lawrence and Lloyd, Woodbine Road.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former, Mary Effie Burns, daughter, Brenda, three brothers, Stanley, Reginald and Robert.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in Zion Church, Gabarus, Sunday at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Lewis Crewe officiating. Interment in Zion Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Palliative Care of Cape Breton.
