Gwendolyn (Duffney) Anesty
62, Coxheath
Gwendolyn Ivy (Gwen) (Duffney) Anesty, 62, of Coxheath passed away Friday, July 9, 1999, at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Bishops Falls, Nfld., she was the daughter of Sophie (Vokey) Duffney and the late Reginald Duffney.
She was a member of St. Mark’s Altar Guild and St. Mark’s Parish in Coxheath. She was a dedicated volunteer for the following associations: Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Liver Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association, Heart and Stroke Foundation.
She is survived by her husband, Lawrence (Laurie); two sons, Wayne (Nicole), Guelph, and Shawn, Halifax; one daughter, Karla (Darren), Halifax; one brother, Winston, Musquodoboit; two sisters, Marilyn, Sydney and Carolyn (Don), Riverview, N.B.; one uncle: Theo, Montreal; one aunt Mary, Sydney; two grandsons, Elijah and Issac; two nieces and four nephews.
She was predeceased by her infant sister Barbara Ann and step-brother Douglas.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. James Purchase officiating. Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.
Donations can be made out to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Scott G. Ford

Scott Gary Ford, 20, a resident of Beech Street, North Sydney, died Saturday, July 10,1999, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Flin Flon, Manitoba, he was the son of Gary Ford, St. John, New Brunswick, and Mary Long, George’s River.
Besides his parents he is survived by sister, Nicole Dawn Ford, St. John, New Brunswick; paternal grandparents, Henry and Shirley Ford, North Sydney; several aunts and uncles and cousins.
He was predeceased by maternal grandparents, Stan and Rachel Long.
Visitation will be today (Monday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. from St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, with the Rev. Joe Gillis officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Louis Arnold Hicks
67, Dartmouth
Louis Arnold Hicks, 67, Dartmouth, died July 11, 1999, in Dartmouth General Hospital.
Born in Liverpool, he was a son of the late Brig Louis Arnold Sr. and Brig Nellie (O’Brien) Hicks. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Lodge 7, Sydney, Elgin Lodge 7, Montreal (Scottish Rite), Philae Shrine Temple, Halifax, Order of the Eastern Star, Salvation Army Halifax Citadel, Sydney Mines Legion Band. He was a past patron of Queen Elizabeth 14, Sydney and Queen Esther 61, Dartmouth. He worked at Sydney Steel for 41 years, retiring as director of marketing. He enjoyed gardening, music, reading, and especially spending time with his grandchildren and family.
Surviving are his wife, the former Joan Tilley; daughters, Betty (Mrs. Dwight MacLeod), Wolfville, Julia (Mrs. Cameron Dunn), Dartmouth; son, Bobby and wife Paula, Sydney; brother Tom, Odessa, Ont.; sister, Nancy Mosher, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Amanda-Leigh, John Alexander, Andrew Louis, Matthew Robert; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara E. MacKenzie; brother Earl; sister, Eleanor Hicks-Blair.
Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth, with Capt. Neil Clanfield officiating. Interment in Riverside Cemetery, Middleborough, Cumberland Co.
Donations to Shriner’s Hospital or charity of choice.

Teresa Johnston
Sydney
Teresa Marie Johnston, of Sydney, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 11, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a short illness.
Born at St. Peter’s she was the daughter of the late J.W. and Katherine (MacKenzie) Johnston.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and a member of the Sacred Heart CWL. Miss Johnston served in the Second World War and was a resident and active citizen of Sydney for more than 75 years.
She is survived by four nieces, Eleanor Finney, Betty Wallace, Katherine Breau, Maxine Johnston, all of Moncton, N.B.; four nephews, Frank Johnston, Joe Johnston, both of Moncton, N.B., Wayne Howlett, Toronto, Ont., Kevin Howlett, Corunna, Ont. She is also survived by her dear friends, Jack and Lillian Laite, who were her care givers for the last 12 years of her life.
Predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Dan; three sisters, Mary Cash, Marion and Sal Howlett; her beloved nephew Colin Cash.
The late Miss Johnston will have visitation Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. Funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Sacred Heart Church with Father A. O’Connor officiating. Cremation to follow.
Donations may be made to the N.S. Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Joseph Alexander MacDonald

A memorial service for the late Joseph Alexander MacDonald, Toronto, a former resident of Sydney, will be held Friday, July 16, 1999, at Holy Redeemer Church at 11 a.m. Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Errol MacDonald.

Donald MacGillivray
81, Sydney
Donald (Roy) Roderick MacGillivary, 81, of Essex Street, Sydney, passed away Friday July 9, 1999 at home.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Lewis Watson and Annie (MacDonald) MacGillivary.
He was a salesman for over thirty-five years with Progressive Wholesalers. He was also a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
He is survived by one daughter, Judy (Ron) Harper, Ottawa; and one son, Jon, Sydney, and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife the late Norma (MacDonald) MacGillivary; one sister, Florence and four brothers, Stanford, Watson, John, and Lovell.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in The Kingdom Hall Of Jehovah’s Witnesses Wednesday at 2 p.m. The service will be overseen by Allan Nygard. Interment will be held in Hardwood Hill Cemetery at a later date. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.

Baden "Buddy" MacLeod
67, New Waterford
Baden Jr. “Buddy” MacLeod passed away suddenly Saturday, July 10, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dave MacLeod.
He is survived by two brothers, Richard (Dick), New Waterford, and John (Marg), Hamilton, Ont; three sisters, Alice (Mrs. Doug Beaton), Orilla, Ont. Renee, Hamilton, Ont., and Mary (Mrs. Dan Steiger), Marion Bridge.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by two brothers, Gus and Tom; two sisters, Cassie and Marguerite Taylor in infancy.
Baden will be sadly missed by Gordon and Elaine Wadden and their sons, Gordie Jr. and Robert, with whom he resided.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the All Saints Anglican Church, New Waterford, with Rev. Fev Arnold officiating. Funeral arrangements under the direction of MacLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford.
Donations may be made to the All Saints Church.

Christine MacLeod

Christy Hill (MacLeod), 88 of 211 Union Street, Glace Bay, died Saturday, July 10, 1999 at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Cheticamp, Cape Breton, in 1911, former Christy (Cormier). She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Annie (Poirier) Cormier.
She was a member of St. Ann’s Parish, Glace Bay. She was an honorary member of the Army, Navy and Air Force, Glace Bay.
Survived by daughters Florence, Mrs. Donald Morgan, Reserve Mines, Marie, Mrs. Ward MacIsaac, Glace Bay, Mary Lawrence (Lou) and Companion Jerry Smith (Boo), both of Glace Bay; sons, Charles and his wife Dorothy Doucette, Glace Bay, John MacLeod and his wife Joanne, with whom she resided with in Glace Bay, Thomas MacLeod and his wife Rose, Ontario; 21 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren
Predeceased by husbands, James Doucette, David MacLeod, Harold MacKenzie and Simon Hill.
Visitation will be held Monday July 12,1999, from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay. Funeral will be held Wednesday July 14,1999, at 2 p.m. from St. Ann’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Burial will be in Parish Cemetery, Glace Bay.

Alban MacNeil
76, New Waterfod
Alban Herbert MacNeil, 76, of 656 St. Joseph Street, New Waterford, died Sunday July 11, 1999, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Lingan, he was the son of the late Linuse and Maud (Slattery) MacNeil. Alban was a member of St. Michael’s Parish in River Ryan. He was a retired seaman and served with the Merchant Marine in the Second World War and was a member of the Army, Navy Airforce Veterans, Unit 217, New Waterford.
He is survived by two daughters, Theresa Olmsted, Owen Sound, Ontario, Margaret (Mrs. Sandor Pinter), Kitchener, Ontario; two sons, John Wayne MacNeil, Kitchener, Ontario and Alban (Jenny), Daley Road, New Victoria; one sister Louise LeFort, Toronto, Ontario; two nephews, Linuse and Frederick LeFort; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He is also survived by six step-children.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Annie Mae MacNeil.
Visitation will take place Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Funeral mass will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, Lingan, with Father Everett MacDow officiating. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Rev. Milton C. Munn
Bloomfield, N.B.
A graveside memorial service for the late Milton Munn was held Saturday, May 29, 1999, at the Bloomfield United Church Cemetery in Bloomfield, N.B., with Rev. Hazen Bezanson officiating. Son-in-law Gary Bruce read the scripture. Milton’s family would like to thank the many people who were of support to them in their time of need.

Mary Evangaline Campbell
83, Whitney Pier
Mary Evangeline (Vangie) Campbell (nee Williams), 83, of Whitney Pier, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loved ones.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Hughie Charles and Margaret (Gillis) Williams. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish and an avid ceramics maker and bingo player. She was deeply loved by all who knew her.
She was predeceased by her husband, Angus Joseph Campbell in 1998.
She is survived by five daughters, Viney Hanna, Nina (Mrs. Junior MacNeil), Sylvia (Mrs. David Young), all of Sydney, Sheila (Mrs. Doug MacArthur), Bonnie (Mrs. J.R. MacNeil), both of Sydney Forks; two sons, Davey (Mary) and Barry (Bev), both of South Bar; two sisters, Nina Riley and Mayme Gillis, both of Sydney; 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by four brothers, Dave, John, Wilfred and Herbert.
The late Mrs. Campbell will have visitation today (Tuesday), July 13 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Redeemer Church with the Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Cremation to follow. Interment in Calvary Cemetery.
Donations may be made to Palliative Care Services of Cape Breton.

John C. Currie
London. Ont./Glace Bay
John C. Currie, 82, died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, in London, Ont.
Born in Birch Grove, Cape Breton, he was the son of the late Alec J. (Mary E. Gilday) Currie, MacKay’s Corner, Glace Bay. Coming to Glace Bay he attended MacKay’s Corner School. He enlisted in the Army during the Second World War, and later on he joined the Glace Bay Police Force. Being interested in community life he served on a committee resulting in the building of Holy Family Church, MacKay’s Corner, Glace Bay. Moving to Antigonish he became chief of police. Later on he accepted a job as security guard at Oakville Ford Plant, Ont.
Surviving are his wife, Edna Gouthro; daughters, Mary (Ryan Hannenberg), Kitchener, Ont., Margaret (John Booth), London, Ont., Pamela (Ted Lojeznski), Chatham, Ont.; son, John O. (Anne) Currie, Kitchener, Ont.; grandchildren, Robert and Mark Hannenberg, Kate and David Booth, Rebecca and Sarah Currie; brother Alfred F. Currie, Dartmouth, N.S.; sister, Emma T. Currie, MacKay’s Corner, Glace Bay.
He was predeceased by brothers, Alec J., Duncan H., Joseph A. and sister, Mary Catherine.
The funeral was held at St. George Roman Catholic Church, London, Ont. on June 10, 1999. Mass was offered for John by Fr. Ray Huntley, June 11, 1999, at Holy Family Parish.

Mary Delores DeGernier
59, Howie Centre
Mary Delores DeGernier, 59, of 18 1st St., Howie Centre, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late J. Duncan and Camillus (MacKinnon) MacQuarrie.
She is survived by one son, David at home; one brother, David (Janice) of Langley, B.C. and a niece, Lisa of Langley B.C. Also survived by her ex-husband, Eoin Cossitt of Sydney.
She was predeceased by her 2nd husband, Ed DeGernier.
There will be no visitation for the late Mrs. DeGernier. Cremation has taken place. A burial service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements entrusted to T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.

Constance E. MacAulay
88, Grand Lake
Constance E. (Connie) MacAulay, 88, of 250 University Blvd., passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Monday, July 12, 1999, after a short illness.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Lila (Hamilton) Knifton.
She is survived by sons, Archibald R., Westmount, Philip F. and Norman E., both at home, Robert (Cardella), Happy Valley/Goose Bay, Nfld. and Gerald (Judy), North Sydney; daughter, Rose (Mrs. John Jorgensen), Alcona, Ont.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Also survived by a sister, Dorothy MacLeod.
Predeceased by her husband, Archibald B. MacAulay, daughter, Lila Anthony and a son, Donald in infancy.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment in Riverview Cemetery, Mira.

Charlotte (Cherry) Pierro, 44, of Wagmatcook, Victoria County, died Sunday, July, 11, 1999, at the family residence, Wagmatcook.
Born in Wagmatcook, she was the daughter of Mary Ellen (Stevens) and Stephen Pierro. She was a member of Queen of the World Catholic Church, Wagmatcook.
She is survived by birth mother, Julia Cremo, Whycocomagh; adoptive sister, Louise Simon, Wagmatcook; adoptive brothers, Benedict Pierro and Christopher Francis, both of Wagmatcook; two brothers, Alden Alex and Alfred Alex, both of Whycocomagh; four sisters, Sophie Pierro, Wagmatcook, Fanny MacDonald, Sydney, Anne Marie Burns, Sydney, and Florence Pierro, Whycocomagh; several nieces and nephews.
The body is resting at her aunt and uncles residence, Ben Peck, Wagmatcook, with visiting hours after 2 p.m. Tuesday and all day on Wednesday. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 15, 1999, at Queen of the World Catholic Church with Rev. Doug MacKinnon officiating. Burial will be in the parish Cemetery.
Donations may be made to charity of ones’ choice.
Arrangements under the direction of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck.
