Noel Albert Doucette, 65, of Anslum Road, Eskasoni, loving husband of Georgina Doucette of Eskasoni, passed away quietly in his sleep after a brief battle with cancer on Tuesday, July 20, 1999.
“Newell” was the son of Sarah Wood and Albert Doucette of Membertou. He was a very kind and generous man and very active in his community. He was best known as a flag carrier in many First Nations communities throughout Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec. He had been on the Holy Family Parish finance committee for many years. He also fund raised for various projects for many years to enhance the quality of the church and its grounds. He was a volunteer for Eskasoni TV Bingo which raised money for the community church. He was also on numerous committees including the Pow Wow committee. Prior to his voluntary time, he worked for Mike Marshall Texaco for many years.
He was preceded by his father, Albert Doucette and siblings, Daniel Doucette, Virginia Doucette, Martha Doucette, Rita Doucette, Caroline Doucette, baby Albert (eight-weeks-old), James William Herney (baby), Alice Herney, Mary Herney, Mary Ellen Herney, twins that died at birth (Herney) and granddaughter, Victoria.
He is survived by his mother, Sarah Wood, Eskasoni; sister, Dorothy Edmands, Boston; brothers, Albert J. Doucette, Eskasoni, Sulian Stone Eagle Herney, Eskasoni and Ralph Joseph Herney, Eskasoni. He is also survived by his loving children, all from Eskasoni, Vaughan Doucette (Shirley), Mike Doucette (Karen), Noel Jr. (Elizabeth), twins Donald and Danny (Arlene), Virginia Doucette, Bernice Doucette, Ruby Doucette and John F. Doucette. He is also survived by 35 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and 15 nieces and nephews. Noel will be sadly missed by his beloved wife and children and numerous grandchildren, also by the community of Eskasoni at large.
He will be resting at his home on Anslum Road, Eskasoni, Thursday after 7 p.m. Funeral will be Saturday at Holy Family Parish in Eskasoni at 11 a.m. Under the direction of W.A. Chant Funeral Services. Fr. Robert MacNeil officiating.
Donald (Dannie) MacAdam
72, Portage
Dannie MacAdam, 72, of Portage, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 1999.
Born in MacAdam’s Lake, he was the son of the late Margaret Jane (Gillis) and Duncan MacAdam. He was a member of Saint Mary’s Parish, East Bay. He worked at Sydney Steel Corp. for 35 years, retiring on Aug. 1, 1989.
He is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife of 47 years, Alice (MacNamara); daughters, Mary MacAdam, Halifax, Theresa (Howard) Tanner, Halifax, Cathy (Dannie) Chipman, Halifax, Isabel (Donald) MacDonald, Halifax, Karen (Michael) Morrison, Halifax, Leona MacAdam, Halifax; his sons, Wayne (Kathy) MacAdam, East Bay, Ronnie (Sharon) MacAdam, Westmount, Donnie (Darlene) MacAdam, Ottawa; seven granddaughters and five grandsons, Lana, Derick, Gregory, Jane, Lindsay, Laura, Julie, Amanda, Colbie, Jenna, Adam and Ryan.
Also surviving are sister, Isabel MacPherson, Portage; three brothers, Archie MacAdam, Sydney, Johnny MacAdam, Reserve Mines and Angus Steve MacAdam, Fall River.
He was predeceased by sister, Mary Agnes and two brothers, Ronald James and Jimmy.
A loving husband, father, grandfather and loving person, Dannie will be greatly missed by all the people whose lives he touched.
Visitation will be at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, Wednesday 7-9 p.m., Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral is Friday at 11 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Church, East Bay with Fr. Frank Abbass officiating. Burial in the parish Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

82, Glace Bay
Catherine MacNeil, 83, Glace Bay, who passed away Sunday, July 18, 1999, is also survived by a brother, Frank MacDonald, sister Joan Townsend, sister-in-laws, Evelyn MacDonald, all from Halifax, and Margaret Devan, Dartmouth.
She was predeceased by a sister, Annie, brother Walter.
Anne Elizabeth McVey
68, Sydney
Anne Elizabeth McVey, 68, of King’s Road, Sydney, formerly of Common Street, Sydney, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Robert D. MacIntyre and Hazel (Munroe) MacIntyre. Anne was a graduate of Sydney Academy and Mount St. Bernard College, Antigonish. She retired from the Nova Scotia Department of Health after many years of service. Anne was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish, the parish CWL, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Social Action Committee and the Pensioners Dart League.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Grant and Elizabeth McVey; three grandchildren and one brother, Howard MacIntyre.
She was predeceased by her husband, Don McVey, a sister, Mary and a brother, Robert.
Visitation for the late Mrs. McVey will be at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today from 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating.
Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Donations may be made to the Cape Breton Palliative Care Society.
Donald Thomas Gaul

Donald Thomas Gaul, peacefully at Elisabeth Bruyere, Ottawa, on Tuesday, July 20, 1999, following a valiant battle with AIDS which he faced with great dignity and courage.
Our son Don (Delia Leonard and Joe Gaul) and brother (Pat, Joe, Robert and Michelle) lived life fully in his 39 years. His indomitable spirit was an inspiration to us and to Stew Broe, Bernie Chapman and Julie Gaul (brothers and sister-in-law); nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Taryn, Kristal, Weston, Colton, Kelsea, Rachel, Jordyn, Sammie and Matt; aunts, uncles and cousins across Canada and the United States.
An urban transit planner with RMOC, Don was an avid skier and volunteer ski instructor for the blind. Don’s Ottawa family of long time friends, his caregivers, and colleagues, with whom he shared so much these past few years, have lost a dear and generous friend.
The family will be receiving visitors at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod St., Ottawa, Thursday, July 22, 1999, after 6 p.m.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held in the chapel at 8 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, July 23, 1999, at St. Joseph’s Church (Wilbrod at Cumberland) at 12 noon. Interment private.

Marguerite M. Howley

Marguerite M. Howley, 61 of 1 Beacon Cres., North Sydney, formerly of Bras d’Or, died peacefully at the Northside General Hospital, Wednesday, July 21, 1999.
Born in Bras d’Or, she was the daughter of the late Milton and Catherine (Beaton) Howley. She was a graduate of the Cape Breton Business College and worked as a medical secretary at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax.
She is survived by her sisters, Anna (Mrs. Dale Yeadon), Halifax, Patricia (Mrs. Stuart Fricker), Ingonish and Grace (Mrs. Bernard Peck), Sydney Mines; her brothers, Joseph (Frances) and David (Delores), Bras d’Or and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Theresa (Robert) Hill, Jean, Antoinette and Laura and her brother, Joseph.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, Rev. Joe Gillis officiating. Burial in the parish Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Gordon MacDonald
47, New Waterford
Gordon Alexander MacDonald, 47, of 311 Ling St., New Waterford, passed away suddenly Wednesday, July 21, 1999.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son the late Chalmers (Chum) and Isabel (MacLeod) MacDonald. He was a member of Calvin United Church and was employed with the Devco Railway for 27 years.
A devoted family man, Gordon is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife, Annette MacDonald; one son, David and two daughters, Heather and Allison, all at home. Also surviving are three sisters, Norma (Ken Wilson), Middle Cape, Jean (Albert Basso), New Waterford and Sheila (Rollie White), New Waterford.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by an infant son, Donald.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford and are incomplete.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Victor Charles Power, 69, Richmond Hill, Ont., passed away Saturday, July 3, 1999.
Born in Sydney, Victor was the son of the late Oscar and Irene Power, 114 Victoria Road.
He is survived by his wife, Gertie (MacNeil); son Wayne and daughter, Margaret; four brothers, Ernest, Windsor, Gordon, Norman and James, all of Sydney and a sister, Barbara Carroll, Sydney.
Burial was in Richmond Hill.

Reginald Robert Winstanley, 55, of 97 Beacon St., Glace Bay, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 1999, in the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Thomas and Agnes (Kelloway) Winstanley. He was a member of St. John’s Church, New Aberdeen.
Reg was an avid softball player. He also coached Glace Bay minor hockey at one time and loved fishing. He was employed with Modern Building Cleaning Co.
Reg is survived by his wife, the former Johnina (Fukala); one sister, Dorothy (Doll) MacInnis, Ontario; two brothers, Thomas and Ronald, both of Ontario.
Visitation will be in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in St. John’s Church, New Aberdeen, with Fr. Paul McGillivray officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Cape Breton Palliative Care.
