Frederick James Banks
84, North Sydney
Frederick James Banks, 84, a resident of Cornwall St., North Sydney, passed away suddenly Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Fogo Island, Nfld., he was a son of the late Frank and Martha Banks.
Fred was a seaman all his life, employed by the Newfoundland Railway in the late 1940s and went on to sail the Great Lakes as a member of the Seafarer’s International Union, until he retired in 1982. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney.
He is survived by his wife, the former, Edna Battiste; sons, Andrew, Toronto and Ronald, Windsor, N.S.; one brother, Cyril, White Bay, Nfld.; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Francis and sister, Violet.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m., Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Reg MacDonald officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Fred will be missed by family and friends.

Bertha Evelyn Hopkins
91, Marion Bridge
Bertha Evelyn Hopkins, 91, of Mira Manor, Marion Bridge, formerly of Sydney, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Huntington, Mira, she was the third daughter of the late Clifford and Maria (Huntington) Huntington.
She was a graduate of the Sydney City Hospital School of Nursing in 1932 and worked as a registered nurse at the T.B. Annex. She was a member of the United Baptist Church, Sydney.
She is survived by two sons, Rev. Hedley (Mary) Hopkins, Port Williams, N.S. and their children Susan, Paul, David and Sharon and Maj. Selwyn (Joan) Hopkins, Kingston, Ont. and their children Jennifer and Andrew; one daughter, Patricia (David) MacLeod, Sydney River and their children Kari and Shawn; two great-grandchildren, Alex, and Matthew Hopkins; four sisters, Eleanor and Maude Huntington, Sydney, Frances (Cecil) Hussey and Lillian Hussey, also one sister-in-law, Barbara Huntington, all of Marion Bridge.
She was predeceased by her husband, Hedley E. in 1995 and one brother, Fred.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in United Baptist Church, Saturday 2 p.m. with Rev. Willis Henderson officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, United Baptist Church, Sydney, or charity of choice.

Sharon (Rena) MacInnis
54, Sydney Mines
Sharon (Rena) MacInnis, 54, of 7 Guy St., Sydney Mines, passed away Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of Melvena MacLeod and the late William Jessome. She was an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 8, Sydney Mines.
She is survived by her husband, Hilty; daughter, Kim and son, Timmy; three brothers, Earl, Billy and Brother; four sisters, Paulette, Laura, Betty and Sister.
Visitation will be held at G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass Monday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines with the Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Helen Webber MacLeod
Memorial Service
A memorial service for Helen Webber MacLeod will be held Monday, Aug. 23 at 2 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Willis Henderson officiating. Interment in Alfred Smith Memorial Cemetery.

Lillian Moules
68, Sydney
Lillian Moules, 68, of 151 Rear French St., Sydney, formerly of Forbes Court, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Margaret (MacNeil) Cameron MacNeil. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Sydney.
She is survived by her husband, Albert and several brothers and sisters.
She was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.
The late Mrs. Moules will have no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held today (Friday) at 7 p.m. in St. Mary’s Polish Church, Sydney. A burial service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements entrusted to the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.

Alphonse C. (Phone) Martell
95, L'Ardoise
Alphonse C. (Phon) Martell, of L’Ardoise, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, in his 95th year, at the QEII Health Science Centre, Halifax.
Born in L’Ardoise, Richmond County, he was the son of the late Passia and Rose (Sampson) Martell.
He will always be remembered as a quiet, peaceful man who gave much to his community. Phon designed the renovations at the Dr. W.B. Kingston Clinic. He also designed the L’Ardoise Community Centre, Holy Guardian Angels Church and Holy Guardian Angels Funeral Home. He also made the plot plan for the parish Cemetery. Phon worked in the building trade industry as a supervisor and had a diploma in architectural design.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Hilda Martell; sisters, Lena Sampson and Sr. Marion Cephas and also by brothers, Angus, Bertram, Amable, Ephraim, Richard and Edmond.
Phon will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews.
His remains will be resting at the Holy Guardian Angels Funeral Home from 2-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Funeral will be held Monday at 3 p.m. in Holy Guardian Angels Church, L’Ardoise with the Rev. John MacIntyre officiating. Burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Dr. W.B. Kingston Clinic, L’Ardoise.
Arrangements under the direction of the Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s.

Arthur Joseph Aucoin
93, Cheticamp
Arthur Joseph Aucoin, 93, of Pere Fiset Guest Home, Cheticamp, formerly of Grand Etang, Inverness County, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at the Guest Home.
Born in St. Joseph du Moine, he was the son of the late Marcellin and Henriette (Aucoin) Aucoin. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph du Moine. He was a veteran of the Second World War. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 32, Cheticamp.
He is survived by a sister, Elvina Hartling, Halifax; nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Marie Emma Chiasson, sisters, Marie Mae and Florence and several brothers and sisters in infancy.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Cheticamp Funeral Home. Funeral service is 10 a.m. on Monday in St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph Du Moine. Interment in parish Cemetery.

Ken MacKinnon
66, Action, Ont.
Word has been received by Mrs. Lois Gear of Brook Street, North Sydney, that her brother Ken MacKinnon, 66, passed away Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, in Action, Ont., at home.
Born in George’s River, he was the son of Roy and Sarah (Roach) MacKinnon.
He is survived by one sister, Lois; brother, Tom, both of North Sydney; also two sons; four grandchildren.
Predeceased by wife Mary, three brothers, Wilfred, Matt and Charlie, sister Peggy.
Services were held in Ontario.

Joseph Giovanni (Hotchie) Marchesin
62, Glace Bay
Joseph Giovanni (Hotchie) Marchesin, 62, of 86 Nolans Lane, Glace Bay, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Samuel and Catherine (Getto) Marchesin. He was a member of Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay. Joe loved walking and watching baseball games and he loved children. At one time he was a coal miner and also worked in construction.
He is survived by his wife, the former Kay Martin; three daughters, Kimberly, Sydney, Tracey, Ontario and Tara, Ontario; two sons, Joe and Christopher, both of Ontario and three stepsons, Leo, Ontario, Donnie, Newfoundland and Billie, Glace Bay; three brothers, Donald and Lloyd (Jane), both of New Waterford and Gary (Cathy), Ontario; four sisters, Teady Liebeck, Ontario, Lorraine (Mrs. Bernie Burke, Lingan, Rose (Mrs. Tom Head), New Waterford and Madonna, Sydney; six grandchildren, Cory, Joey, Samantha, Steven, Kelly and Joshua.
He was predeceased by three brothers in infancy.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church with Fr. John Graham officiating. Burial in Mount Carmel Cemetery, New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Cross Church.
Funeral arrangements under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.

Edith Maude Beresford
97, Glace Bay
Edith Maude Beresford, 97, of 25 Bay St., Glace Bay, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at the family residence.
Born in Lancashire, England, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary (Leigh) Holden.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay.
Mrs. Beresford is survived by sons, Roy (Irene), Eric, George (Norma) and Bill, all of Glace Bay; daughters, Ethel Charlebois, Quebec, Audrey Dubreuil, Sydney; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert, brother, Harry Holden, two sisters and one brother in infancy.
Visitation will be held Sunday, Aug. 22 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral will be held Monday, Aug. 23 at 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay, with the Rev. Margaret Collins officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Family flowers only, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Angus Lloyd "Poppy" Fraser
79, Middle River
Angus Lloyd ‘Poppy’ Fraser, 79, Middle River, Victoria County, died Aug. 21, 1999, at home.
Born in Pleasant Bay, he was the son of the late Albert and Euphemia (Phillips) Fraser. He was a member of Farquharson Presbyterian Church. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed by his family and many dear friends. He was a construction foreman and heavy equipment operator for most of his life. He was also self-employed in a lumber business.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, the former Charleen “Ada” MacQuarrie; sons, Donald and Lynette, Willard and Marlene and Malcolm and Jacquline, all of Middle River; daughters, Kathy and Robert Morrison, Middle River, Isabel and Richard Delcore, Woburn, Mass.; brother, Kenneth and his wife Marion Fraser, Margaree; sisters, Minnie and her husband Harry David; sister-in-law, Virginia Fraser; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brother, Howard and daughter-in-law Mary (Chiasson) Fraser.
The body is resting in the family residence in West Middle River. Visitation Monday (today) and Tuesday from 2-9 p.m. Funeral 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25 in Farquharson Presbyterian Church, Middle River, with Rev. Ken Allen officiating. Burial will be in Middle River Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Victoria County Hospice Society.

Veronica Gillard
89, Glace Bay
Veronica Gillard, 89, of 55 Minto St., and formerly of North St., Glace Bay, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Pat and Johanna (Lannon) Brown. She was a member of St. Leo’s Parish, Glace Bay. She worked for many years at the Sydney Airport and Lingan Golf Course. She was a lifetime member of the North St. A.C. Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by two sons, Wilfred “Willie” (Margie) and Gordon “Chum,” both of Glace Bay; six daughters, Helen Gillard (Holland), Glace Bay, Belle (Allie) Simmons, Glace Bay, Joyce (Syl) Leblanc, Kitchener, Ont., Pat (Roy) Winstanley, St. Catharines, Ont., Marilyn (Donald) Delaire, Niagara on the Lake, Shirley (James) Morrison, Glace Bay; 39 grandchildren; 91 great-grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a special nephew Gerry Brown and special friend Peggy Tilley.
She was predeceased by husband Gordon; two brothers; four sisters and daughter-in-law Mary Frances.
Visitation will be held in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, today 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, 10 a.m. in St. Leo’s Church with Rev. Paul McGillvray officiating. Burial will follow in the parish Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Ken MacKinnon
66, Action, Ont.
Word has been received by Mrs. Lois Gear of Brook Street, North Sydney, that her brother Ken MacKinnon, 66, passed away Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, in Acton, Ont., at home.
Born in George’s River, he was the son of Roy and Sarah (Roach) MacKinnon.
He is survived by one sister, Lois; brother, Tom, both of North Sydney; also two sons; four grandchildren.
Predeceased by wife Mary, three brothers, Wilfred, Matt and Charlie, sister Peggy.
Services were held in Ontario.

Memorial Service
A memorial service will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, at 10 a.m., August 28, for James C. MacLeod who died in Florida, March 10, 1999.
A reception will be held in the church hall following the service.

Kathleen Isobel (Ross) MacLeod

Kathleen Isobel (Ross) MacLeod, Rigby Road, Sydney, Sydney, passed away Friday, August 20, 1999 at the A.W. Ross residence, Coxheath.
Born in Round Island, Cape Breton County, she was the eldest daughter of the late Angus and Catherine (MacKenzie) Ross. A resident of Sydney for over 80 years, she was devoted to her family and St. Andrews Church, a lifelong member of the CNIB, loyal member of IODE, the Clan MacLeod, the Old Sydney Society, and was active in the PC Party. She was on staff of the City Hospital, in the Histology Department until her retirement in 1970. She was the last member of her immediate family. She is survived by her children, Eileen Norton, Kentville; Donald R. MacLeod, and Norma (Mrs. D. (Douglas) MacLeod), Sydney; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and many dear friends and relatives.
She was predeceased by her husband, Malcolm (Mack); three sisters, Margaret Hubley, Madeline Smith, Florence Macdonald; one brother, Donald William Ross.
Visiting will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel from 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, with funeral service at 3 p.m., Rev. Dale Irving officiating. Interment will be in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

R. Gordon Simms, 77, of Alexandra Street, Sydney passed away Saturday, August 21, 1999 at home.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late William and Barbara (Peers) Simms. He was a member of St. Alban’s Church. He retired from Sydney Steel Corporation.
He is survived by two sons: Don, Riverview, N.B., Wesley, Sydney; one sister: Gladys Miller, Sydney; one brother: Bill Gadd, Sydney; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by his wife the former Edna Hussey in 1995; two sisters: Edith Nash; and Phyllis Boutilier.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at St. Alban’s Church Tuesday, 11 a.m., with the Rev. Doug Chard officiating. Interment will be held in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Sydney Memorial Chapel.
Memorial donations may be out to St. Alban’s Church.
