MAXWELL, Patricia June (nee Pearson)
(1942 - 2003)
In the early morning hours of Saturday, August 2, 2003, Patricia June Maxwell (nee Pearson) slipped away to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. With Ken, her husband of 41 years, at her side, she peacefully and quietly ended a courageous 18-year struggle with breast cancer. Born October 30, 1942 in Vancouver, BC, to William and Daisy (nee Montgomery) Pearson (both deceased), Patricia grew up in the Oak Bay area of Victoria, BC. On March 2, 1962 she married Kenneth George Maxwell of Wadena, Saskatchewan, who was then a Physical Training Instructor with the Royal Canadian Navy based in Esquimalt. Following the birth of Anthony Dean in 1964 and Timothy Jeordan in 1967, the family moved to Saskatchewan, where Patti kept house and home together, raised the two boys and supported her husband through school and in his career as a conservation officer. They were posted to several locations in northern Saskatchewan, including four years in Meadow Lake. In 1978 the family moved to Devon, Alberta, where Patti became an active member of the community, in particular by supporting her children's various school, sporting and other activities. Patti leaves a remarkable legacy of selflessness, compassion and devotion. Her thoughts, even in her final days, were always of others. Her desire to help and her ability to listen, empathize and understand even the subtlest emotional, psychological and spiritual truths enabled her to connect with people and minister to them in a special way. This was one of her most special gifts. As well, she had an affinity for the fine arts. Having studied ballet as a young girl, Patti always cut an elegant and lively swath on the dance floor. Well into her fifth decade she and Ken could still surprise audiences with a jitterbug that included a head-over-heels flip. She never took formal piano lessons, but could play by ear and did so resoundingly. Her eye for composition, colour and natural beauty was reflected in her passion for photography. Patti travelled a fulfilling spiritual journey and was an active member of her home church, the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Devon, Alberta. Her special calling was in two areas: working with young people and being a friend to the sick and others in need. In her home, she hosted a weekly get together of high school girls that came to be known as "The Lunch Bunch." For many years Patti volunteered with Reach to Recovery, a breast cancer support network. In addition to her husband Ken, Patti leaves son Tony, daughter-in-law Alex Ker and grandchildren Isaac and Bengie of Orangeville, Ontario; son Jordie, daughter-in-law Karmen and grandchildren Solomon and Zachary of Stony Plain, Alberta, sister Maureen Stebeck (nee Pearson) of Salmon Arm, B.C., and brothers Gordon (Jane) Pearson of Calgary, Alberta, Mel (Lynn) Pearson and Bill Pearson of Kelowna, B.C., and sister Colleen (Bob) Hill (nee Pearson) of Strathmore, Alberta. Patti was predeceased by her father William Pearson, mother Daisy (nee Montgomery), step-father Frank Goodspeed and beloved younger brother, Ted Goodspeed. Those wishing to make donations in honour of Patti are invited to give to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Donations can be made by phone using a credit card at 1-866-302-2223 or online by visiting www.cbcf.org/become/make_donation.html. A Funeral Service and celebration of Patti's life is being held Saturday, August 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the Devon Alliance Church (Highway 60 & Miquelon Avenue, TEL 780-987-3100), with Interment to follow at the Devon Peace Cemetery.
