Beloved aunt to Brenda, Brian, Lynn and Karen; to Rick, Bob, Patty, Debbie, Brian and Flora; and to Dale, Scott, Laurie and Andrew, and great-aunt and great-great-aunt to their many children. The family is especially grateful to Kevin and Joan Pumphrey, Mrs. Grace Beckstead, Brian and Auga Bradbury, Terri Lemmings, Georgina Morrissey, Linda Dart and Durham Hospice, and the loving staff of the Oshawa Extendicare, without whose close friendship and support Marjorie's quality of life would have been severely diminished in the last years of her life. Believed to have been the longest surviving ileostomate in the history of Ontario, and perhaps North American medicine. Marjorie underwent ileostomy surgery in February 1949 at Women's College Hospital. Hospitalized for two years and close to death many times, she credited the pioneering surgery of Dr. Marjorie Davis, the support of her family, and the often emotional and loving health care provided by all WCH staff with saving her life. In 1957, as Marjorie Sparks, with Basil Sandiford, Gordon Galdwin, Helen Crockford, Tom Clarke and others, she helped found the Ileostomy Association of Toronto, a precursor to the Ostomy Canada of today. She served for many years on the Association's hospital visitation committee and helped pioneer after-surgery peer support in Canada. Affectionately remembered at CFRB where she was secretary to Wishart Campbell and then Gordon Sinclair for many years, and at the Industrial Accident Prevention Association. Marjorie was known to all as a modest woman who overcame death, pain and hardship many times and chose to affirm life with courage, love, forgiveness and humour. Relatives and friends may pay their respects at McINTOSH-ANDERSON FUNERAL HOME LTD., 152 King St. E., Oshawa (905-433-5558) on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A service will be held in the chapel on Saturday, April 21, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. Interment at MOUNT LAWN MEMORIAL GARDENS, Whitby.
