KARIUNAS, Juanita Matilda
At Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Sunday, September 16, 2001 in her 72nd year. Juanita, beloved wife of Pranas for almost 50 years. Much loved mother of Leslie, Scott and his wife Susan, and the late Darrell (1954 - 1978). Dear grandmother of Zoe, Carly, Nicholas, Thomas and Olivia. Sister to Geraldine, Gladys, Katherine, Leslie, Doreen and Eileen. Juanita was born in Hubbards, Nova Scotia on October 29, 1929. She moved to Toronto in 1951 and married Pranas in 1952. She had an extensive career in the food services industry. Juanita started as a young waitress at the Royal York Hotel, eventually managing cafeterias in a multitude of locations such as St. Joseph's School for Girls and the OHIP offices in East York. She was also a key member of the Dietician department at Toronto East General Hospital during most of the 1970's. She will ultimately be remembered for her kind heart, culinary delights, exceptional handcrafted garments and her unselfish commitment to her family. Juanita's last years were devoted to volunteer work with St. John the Evangelist Church in Whitby and to her grandchildren. The family will receive friends at the W.C. Town Funeral Chapel, 110 Dundas Street East, Whitby from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Prayers on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. Mass of the Christian Burial will take place at St. John the Evangelist Church (903 Giffard Street, Whitby) on Wednesday, September 19, 2001 at 11 a.m. followed by cremation. Kim was employed in social service work in Whitby. MATTHEW F. O'Connell, Sr.
Hagerstown, MD - Matthew F. O'Connell, age 83 of Hagerstown, Maryland, formerly of Albany N. Y., died Saturday, September 15th after a long illness. Matthew was born on January 24, 1918, the son of John J. and Mary T. O'Connell. He was a graduate of Vincentian Institute in Albany, and was in the first graduating class form Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. He worked for ALCO products, Inc. in Schenectady, NY for many years, then for Worthington Corp. In both Montreal, Canada and Buffalo, NY. He also worked after his retirement in the Finance Office at Maria College in Albany. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific. He was active in Holy Cross Parish in Albany from its beginnings, and was also a volunteer for Mended Hearts and Meals on Wheels. His wife, Ellen M. O'Connell (Tracey) and his sons Matthew F. O'Connell, Jr. and John F. O'Connell predeceased him. Matthew is survived by his children; sons, Kevin O'Connell and wife Chris (Roman) of Horseheads, NY; and Daniel and wife Patti (Marcoccia) of Elmira NY; daughters, Kathleen O'Connell of Hagerstown, MD; Mary Bennett and husband James of Oshawa, Ontario Canada., Ellen Donnelly and husband Patrick of Rockville, MD and daughter-in-law, Linda O'Connell of Manchester, NH.Grandchildren Bridget O'Connell Kurcoba and husband Kris, Matthew and John O'Connell, Maggie O'Connell, Tracey, Kelly and Jennifer Bennett, Kevin, Daniel and Molly Donnelly and Meghan and Christopher O'Connell also survive him. His newborn great grandson is Cloin Matthew Kurcoba. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Rita O'Connell, from Kennebunk, ME and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held Tuesday, September 18th at 9:15 a.m. from the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 N. Allen St., Albany NY thence to Holy Cross Church, Albany, NY, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands, NY.
