(Member of the Searles Trio and Melodic Strings, many years organist and choir director of Mark St. United Church, Peterborough, sang for Lady Eaton at her Sunday Musicales, one of Peterborough s most outstanding Musicians, known throughout Southern Ontario for her talent and showmanship. She also co-founded the Peterborough branch of the Canadian Diabetic Association.) After a lengthy illness on Friday, November 30th, 2001 in the town of Whitby. Loving wife of the late Robert Cecil Searles. Caring mother of Bob and Helen of San Jose, California; Elizabeth Harris and Charles Galea of Port Perry. Will be sadly missed by her grandchildren Sarah and Gabriel Searles, Chris Harris and Stephanie and Rob Wilson. Great grandmother of Aimee and Jessica Wilson. Olive is survived by her brother William Prest and Predeceased by parents Arnold and Flora Prest. ALDWINCKLE, Josephine (Jo)
Josephine Aldwinckle of Oshawa and Stratford, Ontario passed away Peacefully in her 95th year at The Village of Winston Park Nursing Home in Kitchener, Ontario, on 29 November, 2001. Born Lois Josephine Rosa Pursey 20th December 1906 in Gillingham, Kent, England, "Jo" was predeceased by her husband Jack Aldwinckle in February 1972, and by her sister Georgette Bradley of Sandgate, Kent, England in March 1997. She was educated in the French Convent of Saint Chretienne, (Gillingham, Kent) and at Godolphin and Latymer School, Hammersmith, London. Diplomas include the Junior Oxford (Classics), the College of Preceptors, and the Royal Society of Arts for Commercial French. She was employed as a librarian at Hythe, Kent when she won the esteemed Cornwallis Cup trophy for public speaking, as a member of the Junior Imperial League. Following her marriage in 1930, she emigrated to Oshawa and became active in little theatre and the Womens' League of Health and Beauty, and also wrote and produced two inspirational musical pageants during the war years, which were performed at Oshawa Collegiate & Vocational Institute. As a member of the Women's Press Club of Toronto and through her many journalistic years as Womens' Editor for the Oshawa Daily Times, she was particularly well known in the Oshawa area for her "Jo's Journal" column, and as freelance writer for the Oshawa Journal and Oshawa This Week papers. In the 1960s she founded the Oshawa Folk Arts Council, serving as director for many years, and in later years as recording secretary for the Ontario Folk Arts Council. In semi-retirement she served as executive director of Parkwood (the R.S. McLaughlin estate in Oshawa), and produced a history of the Oshawa General Hospital. Finally retiring to Stratford in 1976, she continued to patronize the arts and support the Stratford Festival Theatre, and was a lifetime honorary member of Beta Sigma Phi. Survived by her son Lieutenant Colonel Clive Aldwinckle (R.A.F./R.C.A.F. Ret'd) and wife June of Waterloo, Ontario and four grandchildren, Glenn Aldwinckle and wife Dorina of Waterloo, Ontario; Janice Netherton and husband John of Haines Junction, Yukon; Carolyn Vance and husband Douglas of Aurora, Ontario; and Diane Keil and husband Cal of Waterloo, Ontario; also survived by ten great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and remains will be interred with her husband's in Oshawa. Friends and relatives will be received at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford, from 11 AM to 1 PM, 1 December, 2001. A celebration of her life will be conducted at the Armstrong Funeral Home, King Street East, Oshawa, 18 December 2001 from 6 to 8 PM. Friends who so wish may make memorial donations to the Charity of their choice.

Of Nanaimo in his 54th year. Suddenly on Nov 28th at Victoria, B. C., Beloved son of Elizabeth (Dolly) & Douglas Smart of Oshawa. Devoted father of Amelia & Jamie. Big brother of Sharon Fisher & Colleen Paterson & loving uncle to Jennifer & Angela Fisher & Monica & Gregory Paterson as well as proud great-uncle of Elizabeth Fisher. Garry was a graduate of McLaughlin Collegiate, Oshawa & attended Guelph University, receiving his degree from Nanaimo University. His studies had been interrupted for quite a number of years by his work in the newspaper industry initially as a sports photographer & progressing to reporter & eventually editor. He was in the midst of working to fulfill his lifelong dream of obtaining his Masters & a professorship by attending the University of Victoria when hesuffered a massive heart attack. Garry is resting at the Mt. Benson Funeral Home, 125 Wallace St., Nanaimo, B.C. Funeral service to take place, Monday Dec. 10 at 4:00pm.

CAUCHI, Edward (Eddy)
passed away on Monday, November 26th, 2001 in Brampton at the age of 74 after suffering with asbestosis for many years; retired employee of the Johns-Manville Company; former resident of Whitby and Oshawa. Beloved husband of Carmen. Ed will be lovingly remembered by Grace North (Wayne), Joe Vella (Rita), Jim Vella (Lynne), Harry Vella (Mary) and grandchildren, Jamie, Klerilyn, Jeffrey, Rene, Laura, Alison and Michelle; and great granddaughter Megan; survived by his sister Sally and niece Maryann of Whitby and many relatives in Malta. In 1992 Eddy proudly received the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation which was awarded to persons who made a significant contribution to Canada, to their community or to their fellow Canadians. Eddy spent the last forty years fighting for the rights of injured workers and the unemployed. He was a member of the Ontario Network of Injured Workers, Injured Workers of Ontario (Toronto chapter) and the Asbestos Victims of Ontario. Loved grandmother of Scott and his wife Michelle, Troy and his wife Kathy, Lavinia and her husband Mike Gallagher and Roxanne and her husband Jim Hill. Great-grandmother of Samantha, Summer, Caitlin, Devyn, Cameron, Chevonne, Olivia and Jonathan. Dear sister of Walter Park and his wife Doreen, Joyce Murney and her late husband Chuck, and the late David Park and his wife Helen, Enid Steele and her husband Howard and Jim Park survived by his wife Lila.
