WINTER, Ernest Hugh
passed away peacefully, at the age of 93, on Tuesday September 14, 2004 at Hillsdale Estates, Oshawa. Dear husband of Patricia Winter of Courtice. Father of Susan Dodington (Michael) and Michael Winter (Linda). Grandfather of Sean (Deanna), Christopher, Andrew, Eran (Christine) and Lea. He was a dedicated educator for 46 years until his retirement in 1977. He was head of the English Department at O Neil Collegiate, formerly O.C.V.I., and Eastdale Collegiate. He taught in the Durham District for over 30 years. He came to Oshawa in 1944 as a teacher of English and became actively involved in the Drama Club producing and directing many plays as well as directing and acting himself in plays at the Oshawa Little Theatre. He wrote and edited a number of English textbooks including most notably, Learning to Write which was his best seller and was used by many students in Ontario schools and in British Columbia. During his career he estimated he taught 5000 students. He was an instructor for English teachers in training at MacArthur College of Education at Queen s University in Kingston during the summers in the 1960 s. Other interests were bridge, gardening, golf, tennis, spending summers at the cottage and traveling. During the 1971-72 school year, the board of education granted Ernie a sabbatical leave which he spent in England and Australia with his wife. He spent much of his time visiting schools and universities. He was well loved and respected by many students and colleagues alike during his 44 year teaching tenure at the elementary, secondary and university levels. He will be remembered by many, young and old alike. A private Memorial Service will be held in October, 2004. Peacefully passed away, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, September 13, 2004. Beloved husband of Dorothy ''Sam''. Loving father of Chris (Krista), Greg (Deb), and Jennifer. Proud ''gampa'' of Jacob and Sydney. Dear brother of Sean (Maire), Patrick (Barbara), Fintan (Geraldine), and Jacqueline. Loving son-in-law of Gord West and brother-in-law of Peggy Brown. Predeceased by loving father Jack and mother Margaret Browne. Loved by many nieces and nephews and all his Irish relatives. CLEVELAND, Mary Kazuko (nee Uchiyama)
Peacefully on Monday September 13, 2004 at Lakeridge Health Oshawa at the age of 70. Mary beloved wife of the late Wilfred Colin Cleveland. Loving mother of Richard Cleveland, William Cleveland & his wife Cindy Martin, and Heather Cleveland. Loved grandmother of Andrew & Angie Cleveland. Dear sister of Victor Uchiyama & his wife Betty Lou, Joy & her husband Mervin Pepper, and the late Tom Uchiyama, Frank Uchiyama, and Paul Uchiyama. Mary will be sadly missed & fondly remembered by her loving family & many dear friends. GRAVES, Kenneth Robert (Ken)
1931 to 2004. After a courageous battle with cancer Ken passed away at the Versa Care Nursing Home, Monday September 13th, 2004. Ken is now with his mother Laura, father Howard and sister Lois. He leaves behind daughter Carol and husband Allan of Moosejaw, Saskatchewan son Neil and wife Carla of Moosejaw, Saskatchewan, Harold and wife Shelly of Red Deer, Alberta. Ken was grandpa to four beautiful grandchildren. He will be missed by brothers Howard, Ron, Harold and Scott, and sisters Beahula, Diane and Trish. The family is holding a private goodbye to Ken.

HANCOCK, William Thomas
(Retired Salaried 38 year employee of General Motors Canada) Peacefully at Lakeridge Health-Bowmanville on Monday, September 13th, 2004 at the age of 77. Beloved husband of Erla (nee Toole) for 52 years. Dear father of Sharon Coburn and her husband Jim of Owen Sound, Diane Hancock of Oshawa and her husband the late Wayne, Debbie Murphy and her husband Ralph of Courtice and Pastor Richard Hancock and his wife Stephanie of Newcastle. Devoted and cherished Papa of Megan and Dayna Hancock, Brandon and Brock Murphy and Jesse, Jacob, Riley and Rickella-Grace Hancock. Brother of Jean Armstrong, Jack Chamberlain and the late Dorothy Pipher, Frances Seeley and Viola Mapes. Lovingly remembered by his extended and church family at Trulls Rd. Free Methodist Church. McLEAN, Grace Varnell
Entered into rest on Monday, September 13th, 2004 at Lakeridge Health, Port Perry, in her 92nd year. Grace, beloved wife of the late Herbert Russell McLean. Dear mother of Carol (Edward) Wells, Catherine (Ronald) Moore. Loving grandmother of Stephen and Emanuel, Cameron and Elaine, and Cathy and Glen. Survived by her sister Barbara (Lorne) Hunter and brother Russ (Beverly) Conlon. RATTRAY, Helen 'Gram'
(Retiree of IBM, Don Mills Lab) passed away peacefully at home, with her grandchildren, on Monday, September 13, 2004, at the age of 94 years. Loving mother of the late Victoria Baird. The best 'Gram' to Heather and Stan, Bruce and Sue; and great-grandmother to Victoria and Nicole. She will be missed by her son-in-law Arnott and Pat, niece Mary Kelly and family overseas. SHEA, Patrick, ''The Fighting Soldier''
Adoring husband, dearest father, sweet Pa, a remarkable man. Born December 13, 1921 on a ''Peach of a day'', Monday, September 13, 2004 at 7:07 p.m. Patrick Lawrence Shea, age 82, left us peacefully, with dignity, pride, and with the love of his life Sadie (wife) and his children at his bedside. He leaves his (Honey)(Sweetie Pie) Sadie Shea and five children Kevin, Peter, Carol, Joanne and Thomas, and proud grandchildren Adam, Erin, Rebecca, Alexander, Kyle and Shea. He embraces his late parents John and Carrie and late siblings Frank, Jim, Neil and Marie, and will be truly missed by surviving sisters Kay and Thelma. Patrick fought the fight and has shown us all strength, honour and most importantly love of his family. This heart beats on. God Bless. Peacefully, on Monday September 13, 2004, with his family by his side, Ronald Thomas Whalen entered the heavenly mansion prepared for him. Loving husband and soul mate of Janice (nee Bode). Dear father and mentor to daughter Stacie and Ian of Pickering, son Jason & Mark of Toronto, and son Jonathan and his wife Natalie of St. John's, Newfoundland. Caring son of Eileen Inglis. His community involvement included United Way of Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge, as a member and captain of the Citizen's Review Panel, past member of Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge PC Executive Associations (Federal and Provincial), Co-convenor Ajax & Pickering Cansurmount (A division of the Canadian Cancer Society), Member of Ajax Home Week Committee and the Great Hospital Bed Race Committee (Ajax & Pickering Hospital) and Vice Chair Pickering Village Business Association. Peacefully, on Monday, September 13, 2004 at her home in Port Perry, at age 75. Clara (nee Watson), beloved wife of the late Edward Whitter. Loving mother of Steven (Janice) of Scarborough, Kathy (Kam) of Newcastle, Ronald of Port Perry, and Sharon (John) of Oshawa. Clara will also be missed by her 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Dear sister of Bertha, Bernice, Jenny, and the late Phyllis. She will be remembered for her outgoing enthusiasm and zest for life. Music was a great part of her life and playing the piano for others was her greatest pleasure. WWII Veteran (Corporal Polish Cavalry) & General Motors retiree of 31 years. Peacefully, after a brief illness, with his family by his side, at Mt. Sinai Hospital on Sunday September 12, 2004 in his 86th year. Predeceased by parents Alexandra and Alexander Baczek, brothers Roman and Victor, sisters Stella and Janina and his first wife Moira. Sadly missed by wife Janina (Nina), children Jennifer (Bill), Gerry (Darlin), Paula (Danny) and Daniel (Tracy), Stepfather to Chris (Steve), Isobel (Bill), Lilly and Donna (John). Grandfather of 19 children and 1 great grandchild. According to Wacek's wishes, cremation has taken place. MEYERS/NICHOLS, Jeffery Brian
September, 24, 1963 to September 12, 2004. passed away as a result of a massive heart attack while on business in St. Louis, Missouri. Jeff is survived by his wife Kristi of Fort Collins, Co., U.S.A. where the couple resided. His mother Kay Myers (Nee Wallace) of Courtice, ON and his extended family, sister Jeanette and niece Jade Myers of P.E.I., Maurice Fielder and his family and numerous Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins and his great Aunt Olga Black of Oshawa. Predeceased by his father Paul Myers of P.E.I and his paternal father Brian Nichols of Ottawa, and his grandparents Albert and Evelyn Wallace, Norman and Hilma Nichols. Remembered with love by his Father in law and Mother in law Ron and Roberta Hall, Brother in law Michael and nephew Tyler and co-workers at Miner & Miner, Fort Collins, U.S.A. Jeff traveled extensively throughout Canada, U.S.A., Europe and Far East and will be dearly missed by his friends and business associates. A young man who loved to make you smile and was in the prime of his life and career.
