Steve was born in 1933 in Port Colborne, Ontario, and moved to Kintail, in Huron County, in 1944 with his mother and sister. It was in Kintail that he met Sally, and the family of Dr. A. A. J. Following the tradition of his three brothers and his father Lewis, Steve worked on Great Lakes freighters for several years before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He received his teacher training at Michigan State University in Lansing, began his teaching career in Port Huron, Michigan, and continued in that career after moving to Whitby in 1967. He taught at McLaughlin Collegiate and Donovan Collegiate, and then worked for two years as liaison officer with the Ministry of Education. In 1971 he became vice-principal at Dunbarton, and later at Henry Street and Ajax High Schools. In 1979 he was promoted to principal at General Vanier, and later became principal at Central Collegiate and then O'Neill Collegiate before his retirement in 1989. After complications from surgery left him with paraplegia in 1997, he continued his work with the Durham District School Board, working from his wheelchair, as a counsellor at the Continuing Education Centre in Oshawa. He will be greatly missed by his friends, care givers, and above all, his family - his wife Sally, children Bill and partner Janice, Barb and Chris Windfeld, Bob and Anne Marie, and his grandchildren Jacqui, Steve, Elliott, Emma, Zachary, and Megan, as well as his brothers Bill and Bob, his sister Loreen, and his sister-in-law and brothers-in-law. Burial will take place in the farm community Steve loved, in Kintail Cemetery, where he will be alongside family and friends from earlier times and generations.
