(former resident of Auburn Village) Peacefully at Fairhaven Nursing Home on Saturday, January 15, 2005, in her 92nd year. Loving wife of the late James Donald Patten. Dear mother of Sharon Van Luven and her husband Harold. Grandma to Shelley and her husband Jim Pakenham, Ruth and her husband Ed Poley, and Kerry and her husband Scott O’Leary. Nanny to her great-grandchildren Tonya and fiancé Josh, Kristen, Brayden, Colton, Drake, Ceara, Dalton, Kyrianne, and great-great-granddaughter Alayna. Sister of the late Ken Mackay and his wife Doreen, Karl “Bud” Mackay, and survived by sister-in-law Marie. Sadly missed by her nieces and nephews and their families. BOLLAND, Mary Black (nee Thomas)
(1903 - 2005) passed away peacefully in her sleep Tuesday, January 11th at Strathhaven Life Care Centre. Predeceased by her beloved husband Eric Bolland and her eight siblings, Mary was 101. Mary worked at General Motors for many years in the sewing room. Sadly missed by all who knew her especially Jim and Evelyn Thomson, Susan and Mike Lahoda, Diane Cholomondely, David and Danny Thomson, Bill Lovelock and family, Rita Thomson and family and Lynda Shephard and family. In lieu of a service, Mary requested that donations be made to Knox Presbyterian Church or another Charity in her name.

BROOKING, Ruth Patricia
B.A. Queen’s University B.L.S. University of Toronto (Former Chief Executive Officer, Oshawa Public Library 1974-1993) After a courageous battle with cancer, Ruth passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at Oshawa General Hospital on Tuesday, January 11, 2005. Born March 17, 1928 West Whitby Township, Ruth was the youngest daughter of Ernest and Hazel Brooking. The last member of the Brooking family, she was predeceased by her parents and her sisters Ethel, Florence, Eva (Mrs. John Brightman) and May (Mrs. William H. Young). Ruth was the dearly loved aunt of Janice Madill, Oshawa; Paul Young (Carol), Wellington; Bob Young (Laura), Brooklin; Heather Shea, Wellington. She was the dear great aunt of Jeff Madill (Cheryl), Rob Madill (Kelly), Angela Shea and Gregory and Walter Young. She was also a great great aunt to Morgan and Matthew Madill and Emma Madill. Ruth’s entire career was devoted to the Oshawa Public Library. She was head of cataloguing and adult services and was assistant CEO. In 1974 she became CEO of the Oshawa Public Library and remained in that position until her retirement in 1993. During her term of office, the library underwent considerable expansion with the construction of the Jess Hann Branch in 1977, the major expansion of the R.S. McLaughlin Library, the new book mobile in 1981, and the building of the North View Branch in 1987 and the implementation of the GEAC automation system in 1988. Ruth was involved in many aspects of the Oshawa community, and gave extensively of her time. She was a member of the Board of Directors of Parkwood Estate, and was an active member of the “Now and Forever” campaign. She also served on the Board of the Brooklin United Church and was a member of the Brooking Society, Devon, England, the Rotary Club of Oshawa, the Air Cadet committee and the Canadian Club of Oshawa, serving as President from 1989-1990. In recognition of Ruth’s many years of volunteer service to the City of Oshawa, Ruth was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2000. In addition to her career and her volunteer work, Ruth was tremendously devoted to her family. She was a “giver” in every way imaginable. She was young at heart and always game for anything – which is why her great nephews and nieces loved her presence so much. She will be deeply missed by her family. Ruth’s family is grateful to all the doctors and nurses who cared for her during her illness. Ruth fought this insidious disease with fierce determination. After being diagnosed with cancer in 2002, Ruth continued to live life to the fullest, and was determined to take her last trip only months ago with one of her friends on the Queen Mary II. Peacefully surrounded by her family at Fairview Lodge, Whitby on Tuesday, January 11th, 2005 in her 86th year. Beloved wife of the late Joseph Franklin Elsmore. Cherished and devoted mother of Joseph and his wife Debbie, Tonia and her husband Gerry Kirby. Loving “Grammie” of Melody and her husband Jeff Mallette, Jeff, Kaitlin, Skylar Kirby and “Great Grammie” of Taylor Mallette. Sister of the late Rosie Giberson, Bessie DeMerchant, Albert, Ed and George Doherty. Also lovingly remembered by her nieces, nephews and their families.
