METKE, HENRY passed away on Monday, March 10, 2003 at the age of 90. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Ella; two daughters: Shirley Miller of Chase, BC; Myrna Webster (Kent) of Delta, BC; three grandchildren: Tim Pollard (Regina); Mike Duthie (Shelley); Catherine Ishida; four great grandchildren: Zak, Alec, Austin and Rachael. Predeceased by three sisters and three brothers. After farming at Cadillac, Saskatchewan, for 25 years, he moved to Kelowna with his family to retire and to become involved in many hobbies. An avid gardener he became an honorary life member of the Kelowna Garden Club. He grew fruit and vegetables and made wine from his bounty. He travelled the deserts and mountains of the southern U.S.A. and Mexico hunting for rocks and gems to fashion jewelry and he became an honorary life member of 1120 Rock & Gem Club. Henry loved song birds which lead him to organize a Club to bring back bluebirds by building 2,666 nesting boxes and encouraging volunteers to place them in the meadows of Kelowna and other BC areas. His most rewarding hobby was music. Born with a great talent but very little instruction, he and his two brothers formed a 3-piece dance orchestra in the thirties and forties and played for school-house dances. When he was 60 years old he learned to play by note. He and his friend Ken Clark formed their own band, The Prairie Pals. They played in nursing homes and community facilities for many years, bringing back memories of the older songs. Henry loved to go to garage sales, flea markets, hunting to find the old tunes on sheet music. In 1992 he formed the Association to Preserve Old Music. His dream of setting up a lending library did not materialize but we hope that some young people will benefit from his extensive collection. Henry belonged to many non profit societies such as St. George Masonic Lodge No. 41, Orchard City Oddfellow Lodge No. 59, Kelowna Eastern Star Chapter 62, and Kelowna Rebekah Lodge #36. A memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 15th at 5:00 pm at Chapel of Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC with Reverend David Martyn officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Center for the Southern Interior, 399 Royal Avenue, Kelowna, BC V1Y 5L3. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements by SPRINGFIELD FUNERAL HOME LTD. 250-860-7077
