Jessie Nora Hatt
HATT, JESSIE NORA HATT, 96, of North Head, Grand Manan passed away Friday evening April 2nd, 2004 after a lengthy illness, at the Grand Manan Hospital. Born at North Head, she was the daughter of the late Oswald and Flora (Stanley) Parker. Before her retirement Mrs. Hatt was a cook at the Marathon Hotel and also at the Grand Manan Hospital, a member of the North Head Wesleyan Church, the Ladies Missionary Group and also the Senior Ladies of Rotary Isle Estates.
Mrs. Hatt is survived by her daughter Hazel Brown, Grand Manan, two sisters Stella Avery, Ella Gaskill, ten Grand Children and six Great Grand Children as well as several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hatt was predeceased by her husband Charles as well as by five sisters Edith, Fern, Della, Blake, and Nettie, also three brothers Harry, Garfield and Cleveland.
Visiting will be at the Ells Funeral Home, Saturday evening 7-9 PM, Sunday 2-4, 7-9 PM with funeral service to be held from the North Wesleyan Church, on Monday, April 5th, at 2:00 PM with Rev. Charles Bain officiating with Interment to follow in the family plot North Head Community Cemetery later in the spring. Donations to the North Head Wesleyan Church Building Fund would be appreciated. Daniel Fillmore (Danny) Linton
LINTON, DANIEL FILLMORE ( DANNY ) 40; passed away at the Grand Manan Hospital on Saturday, July 10th, 2004, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born on Grand Manan he was the son of Richard Linton and the late Beryl Linton of Castalia. Danny was the Captain of the Determination #1 and was a lobster fisherman. Lobster fishing was Danny s lifelong ambition. He was a member of the North Head Wesleyan Church, the Grand Manan Fisherman s Assocation. He is survived by his wife Wendy Jean ( Neves ) Linton at home, Woodwards Cove, one daughter Danielle, three sons, Dane, Dexter, and Denver all at home. Also three sisters, Alvalee Patterson, Patricia Temple, and Carrie Linton all of Castalia, four brothers, Timothy, Ingalls Head, Alexander (Sandy ) Linton ( Carla ) of St. Andrews, Fulton ( Sharlene) Linton, Bruce ( Donna ) all of Castalia. He was predeceased by his mother, and two brothers David, and Richard.
Visitation will be held at the North Head Wesleyan Church on Monday 2-4 PM, 7-9 PM from where the funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 13th, 2004 at 1:30 PM
With Rev. Gary Campbell assisted by Rev. Charles Bain, Interment to follow in the family plot Maple Grove Cemetery, Castalia. Barbara Rosemary Small
BARBARA ROSEMARY SMALL, 63, The death of Barbara Rosemary Small,63, of Castalia, N.B. occurred at the Atlantic Health Science Centre Palliative Care Unit, Wednesday, August 6,2003.
Barbara was the cherised mother of warren Spires (Leslie), Milton, Ont., and Adam Spires (Petra), Lethbridge, Alberta and grandmother to Scott, Shannon, Quinn, Neil and Kelvin. She will also be sorely missed by her mother, Marjorie Small (Leon), Castalia, N. B., her sister, Carmen Roberts (Peter), Seal Cove, N. B. and several aunts, uncles, cousins and two nephews.
She was predeceased by her father, Leon Small, and a beloved son, Leon Spires.
Barbara loved children and taught Sunday School 7 years, coached Little League Baseball 10 years and was a school bus driver for 28 years, where all her children were special to her. She was a member of St. Andrews & St. David's United Church, Saint John, N. B. and for the past 5 years was largely responsible for the rebirth of the Castalia United Baptist Church Summer Services. Her clear alto voice could be heard with various choirs and musical groups.
She played many instruments and for several years performed with the Saturday Night Jamboree and with Aubrey Hanson on CFNB, Fredericton, N. B. Barbara played softball for many years and was an avid fan of the Montreal Expos.
The family will receive friends and relatives at Ells' Funeral Home, Grand Harbour, N.B. on Monday, August 11, 2003 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.. The Memorial Service will be held from St. Paul's Anglican Church, Grand Harbour on Tuesday, August 12,2003
at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. William Randall, Rev. Howard Anningson and Kevin Frankland officiating.
Interment to follow in the family plot Maple Grove Cemetery, Hill Rd., Grand Manan, N. B. At Barbara's request any donations may be made in her memory to Cherry Brook Zoo, Saint John Rescue League or Grand Manan Library for childrens books.

Mildred Virginia Small
SMALL, MILDRED VIRGINIA, 101, of Woodwards Cove, Grand Manan passed away at the Grand Manan Nursing Home on Thursday, July 22, 2004. Born in Newportnews, Virginia, U.S.A. She was the daughter of the late Frederick and Mary ( Roberts ) Lovatt.
She was a member of Central Wesleyan Church, and the Eastern Star Lodge, Grand Manan. She is survived by two daughters Mary ( Herbert ) McCallaster, Maine, Jetta ( Reginald ) Smith, Maine, two sons Burton ( Rowena ), and Spencer ( Alice ) Small of Woodwards Cove, one sister Alice ( Sydney ) Maker, Lubec, Maine, and one brother Richard ( Gisela ) Lovatt of New Hampshire. Thirteen grand children and twenty five Great Grand children. She was predeceased by her husband Walter George Small, one sister Ethel, one brother Roger. The family will receive friends and relatives on Friday 7-9 PM, and Saturday 2-4 PM, 7-9 PM with the funeral service to be held from Central Wesleyan Church, Grand Harbour on Sunday July 25th, at 1:30 PM with Rev. Edna Frances Small
Edna Frances Small, 85, of White Head Island, Grand Manan, passed away at the Grand Manan Nursing Home Saturday evening, February 8th, after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Small was the daughter of the late Darrell and Gertrude ( Trask ) Cheney of Little River, N.S.
Mrs. Small was the Post Mistress on White Head for Twenty- three years, and a member of the White Head Baptist Church.
Survived by one daughter Claudia Barnett ( Donald ) of Fredericton, one son Russell Small
( Hanna ) of Oakville, Ont., six Grand Children Drew Simpson (Sharon ), Jane Gillies (Kevin ),
Michael Barnett (Chantal ), Kevin Barnett ( Tracey ), Ryan Small ( Vesna ), Darren Small ( Robin ), seven Great Grandchildren, as well as several neices and nephews.
Mrs. Small was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband Gladwyn, September 2001, also she was predeceased by two sisters Ruth, Artis, and two half sisters Twilah, Rozelle, and one half brother Cameron.
The family will receive friends and relatives at the White Head Baptist Church on Tuesday February 11th, 2-4, 7-9 PM from where the funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 2 PM
with Rev. James Appleby officiating.

Hovey Dickinson Russel
HOVEY DICKINSON RUSSELL, 86, of Woodwards Cove, Grand Manan, passed away at the Grand Manan Nursing Home on Monday morning August 11th, 2003.
Born at home, Woodwards Cove February 6th, 1917 he was the son of the late Frank and Noreen( Guptill ) Russell.
He leaves to mourn his wife Mildred ( Morse ) Russell, four sons Bernard( Deanna ), Scotty, Dale ( Betty ) and Frank ( Crystal ) Russell all of Grand Manan, N.B. Fifteen Grand Children, Thirty-eight Great Grand Children, and one Great Great Grand Daughter.
He was predeceased by two brothers Norman, and Craswell, also two sisters Hilda and Mildred, and one Great Grand Daughter Bridgette Bailey Russell.
Mr. Russell was very prominent in the fishing industry on Grand Manan and abroad, he owned and operated Purse Seiners, Herring Carriers, Lobster Boats, many Herring Weirs as well as operated Hovey Russell & Sons Fish Plant where they processed Smoked Herring, Scallops, Clams, and Ground Fish for the world markets.
Hovey enjoyed playing cards, hunting and fishing, watching his children playing sports, over the years, he was well liked and respected by all who knew him and will be sadly missed in the community life of Grand Manan, by his family and the Islanders as well.
The family will receive friends and relatives at The Immanual Pentecostal Assembly on Tuesday, August 12th, 2-4 PM, 7-9 PM from where the funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 13th, at 2 PM with Pastor Dennis Sisco officiating,Interment to follow in the family plot Maple Grove Cemetery, Hill Road, Grand Manan, N.B.

Velma Ruth Tidd
TIDD, VELMA RUTH TIDD, 87, of Brown s Flat formerly of Seal Cove, Grand Manan, passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Friday evening August 6th, 2004. Born on Little Wood Island she was the daughter of the late Wesley and Addie Wilcox. Mrs. Tidd leaves to mourn one daughter Mrs. Auralie Inman, of Brown s Flat, one sister Norma Griffin, Deep Cove, one brother Preston ( Ruth ) Wilcox of Seal Cove, two Grand Children, Karen Purcell and Kevin Inman of Woodstock, N.B. Six Great Grand Children Colin, Tasha, Krystle Purcell, and Emily, Alicia, and Matthew Inman as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by an infant son Wilbert Clifton, two sisters Esther, Hilda and three brothers Cline, Ralph and Ashley Wilcox.

Merton Lloyd Green
GREEN, MERTON LLOYD, 42, of Ingalls Head, Grand Manan, N.B. passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday afternoon, August 9th, 2004. Born at North Head he was the son of Gwendolyn and the late Laurence Green of Grand Harbour, N.B.. Merton was a fisherman and worked in the salmon farming, lobster fishing.and was also a dulser. He enjoyed fishing and was a wonderful and loving father and leaves to morn besides his mother, his wife Victoria (Vicky) at home, three sons Christopher Tate, Jeffrey, Matthew Green at home. One sister Janene Green, one brother Juston Green of Grand Harbour, N.B. as well as several neices and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Laurence ( 2003 ), and one sister Lorena.

Born in Saint John he was the son of the late John Lambert Sr., He is survived by his mother Hilda Lambert, two brothers John Jr, of L Etang, and Norman(Brenda) Lambert of Black s Harbour.
David has been employed as a Fisherman.

COOK, NADINE ANNETTE 34, of Grand Manan passed away on Sunday morning October 10th, 2004.
Born in North Head she was the daughter of Wendell and Marcia Cook of Seal Cove.
She is survived by her parents, her partner Buckey Zwicker, two sons, Jamie Cook and Tyson Brown, one daughter Kristen Brown, two step daughters Tailor Fraser, Nicole Zwicker, one brother Kendell Cook, one sister Cantrese Clinch (Ian), all of Seal Cove. Also survived by twelve very special nieces and nephews, Doug, Greg, Amber, Christine, Michael, Jessica, Daniel, and Courtney Clinch. Mitchell and Sarah Cook, Coreena Zwicker and Zach Stanley. Her very best friend Kim Stanley, special sister in law Holly Cook and Grammy Neta (Jauanita Stanley).

DOW ANTHONY NELSON (TONY) 33; of Seal Cove, Grand Manan passed away on Sunday morning October 10th, 2004.
Born in North Head he was the son of Rodney Dow of Grand Manan, and Ardis Dow of St. Stephen, N.B. He was a fisherman.
He is survived by his parents, and step mother Judith Dow, also by his grand mother Myrtle Dow, and grand parents Chester and Alice Green, Grand Manan, one daughter Loveica MacKenzie, one son Landon MacKenzie, Grand Manan, and two brothers Rodney (Janie) Dow Jr., and Scott (Debbie) Dow, of St. Stephen, N.B.

Mrs. Laleah M. Brown, 91, of Grand Manan passed away at the Grand Manan Nursing Home Tuesday, January 14th. Mrs Brown was born of the late John Capen and Vivian ( Morse ) Ossinger, she was a member of the Grand Harbour United Baptist Church, the Helping Hands, and also a Member of the Alexandra #1 Pythian Sisters. She is survived by one daughter Mrs. Geraldine ( John ) Ingersoll of Woodwards Cove, and one son Mr. Murray ( Mary ) Brown of Grand Harbour, one sister, Mrs. Blanche Guptill of Grand Harbour, 11 Grand Children, 22 Great Grand Children, 6 Great Great Grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Mrs Brown was predeceased by her husband Sherman, one Grandson Bryce Daggett, one sister Helen Moorhouse and one brother Maybury Ossinger.

Austin Green
After a lengthy illness, Mr. Austin ( Aussie ) Green of 1740 Route 776, Seal Cove Grand Manan Island passed away at the Grand Manan Hospital Sunday May 19th, 2002, at the age of 72. He was the son of Joseph and Mary ( Schofield ) Green. Mr. Green worked as lobster fisherman before his retirement. He is survived by his good friend and companion Marion Mason, two sons Mr. Wayne Green ( Castalia ) and Mr. Phillip Green (Castalia), two daughters Donna Green (Castalia) and Mrs. Brenda (Herb) Sewell (McAdam). Also four sisters Leah Ingersoll (North Head ), Glenna (Harvard) Jones, Fredericton, Velda Randall and Olive Brown both of Letete, two brothers Stanley (Mary) Green and Malcolm (Catherine) Green both of Seal Cove, 9 Grand Children and 2 Great Grandchildren.
Visiting hours will take place at Central Wesleyan Church Monday 2-4 and 7-9 pm from where the Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday May 28th, 2002 at 1:30 PM with Rev. Laurence Lee (Bud) Green 73; of Grand Harbour, passed away at the Grand Manan Hospital after a brief illness on Wednesday morning, March 4th. Born at Grand Harbour he was the son of the late Archie and Elva ( Dakin ) Green. Mr. Green was a retired fisherman. He is survived by his wife at home Gwendolyn ( Bagley ) Green, one daughter Janene Green, two sons Merton ( Victoria ) Green and Justin Green all of Grand Manan. Three sisters Lona Urquhart, North Head, Shirley ( Donald ) Parker, Grand Harbour, Doris ( Theodore ) Huckins, Woodwards Cove, and three Grand Children. Mr. Green was predeceased by one daughter Lorena Mae, one sister Lila Harris, and one half brother Merrill Dakin.

Mary H. Ingalls
After a brief illness Ms. Mary H. Ingalls of 1162 Route 776 Grand Manan passed away Wednesday March 13th, 2002 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, she was 78. Born of the late William and Della Ingalls, she was a music teacher until she retired and member of the Grand Harbour United Baptist Church. She is survived by several cousins and friends.

George Willard Johnson
George Willard Johnson, 64, of 12 Marathon Lane, Grand Manan, N.B. passed away at the Grand Manan Hospital, surrounded by his family on Sunday morning November 17th, 2002. Born at Woodwards Cove, he was the son of the late Willard and Faye ( Forsythe ) Johnson, of Woodwards Cove, N.B.
Georgie was a fisherman and for many years, was the owner and Captain of the MV. Aaron & Kate. He was a devoted father and Grandfather, an avid hunter and spent many days hunting and camping with his friends David and Neil.
He was a member of the North Head United Baptist Church, Mananook Lodge #23 F & AM, Grand Manan.
Survived by one daughter Helen Johnson, ( Rodney Ingalls ), three sons Bill Johnson ( Rhonda ) of Sussex, Bruce Johnson, and Robert ( Bobby ) Johnson ( Leona ) of Grand Manan, two brothers Francis Benson ( Phyllis ), Biddleford, Maine, and Leon Benson ( Sandra ) Calais, Maine. One sister Kay Jefferies ( Jeff ), Daytona, Florida. Eight Grandchildren, Heidi Urquhart, (Robert ), Kate Ingalls, Aaron, Jay, Joshua, Benjamin, Jared, Janica Johnson, and one Great Grand-son Carter Urquhart. Several neices and nephews.
Georgie was predeceased by his wife Myrna ( 2001 ), his father Willard ( 1941 ), his mother Faye ( 1975 ), and brother Walter Green (2002 ).

Mr. Gerald Flewelling Johnson of North Head, Grand Manan Island passed away at the Grand Manan Hospital Tuesday, October 29th, 2002 he was 89. Born in North Head he was the son of the late Mr. & Mrs. John & Stella (Flewelling) Johnson. He is survived by his son Mr. Evan (Gladys ) Johnson, North Head; and one Grand Daughter Karen Johnson, Toronto ON. Mr. Johnson was predeceased by his wife Mary and one son David.

Ross H. Russell
Well known local businessman, Mr. Ross H. Russell of Castalia, Grand Manan, passed away at the Grand Manan Hospital Saturday June 14th, 2003. Born in Harrington Cove, Grand Manan on January 17th, 1917 he was the son of the late Edgar and Alma (Joy) Russell. He attended school in Deep Cove and Seal Cove, Grand Manan and in 1935 began work as the youngest commission agent of the time for Jones Schofield, Hatheway, Canada Packers and Royal Fruit Companies, covering the territory of Grand Manan, Campobello and Deer Island.
In 1941 he joined the active army, serving in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp until his discharge as Staff Sargent in 1946. In 1945 he married Theodora Griffin and the following year they returned to Grand Manan, where he opened a service station under the name Russell s Sales and Service. In 1951 he purchased a second property on the island and opened a Western Tire and Auto associate store, later incorporated as Ross H. Russell Limited, one of the island s largest retail outlets for many years. In 1954, due to illness, he sold the service station to the Irving interests. He continued to operate the general store until 1968 when he closed the business and became the representative for Willet Foods,
Canada Packers and Sussex Poultry. He remained in this position until his retirement in 1987.
In retirement he led an active and varied life, working occasionally in sales, frequently serving as an advisor to many local business-people and caring for his home and properties. Throughout his life he was also and active investor in real estate on the island.
Never one to be idle, he often said his work was his hobby, yet he made time in his life for his church, family and community. He was a member of the North Head Wesleyan Church and was its Sunday School Superintendent and Vice Chairman of the Board for many years. He also served as the Church Board Secretary and Treasurer in the late 1980's and early 1990's. He was a member of the Board of School Trustees for School District 22 and a member of the Board of the Grand Manan Hospital and interim Administrator of the Hospital as well. He had also served on the Castalia Local Service District Council and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 44.
He is survived by his wife, Theodora, one son, Brian Ross Russell of Washington D.C., one daughter, Shelley Thomson of Petitcodiac, N.B., for grandchildren, Russell, Justine, Kathleen and Nadine, his sister in law Helena of North Head, an aunt, Mrs Beryl MacGregor and her daughter Joan Hayes of Saint John and six cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Ron.
Visiting hours will be held at the North Head Wesleyan Church Monday from 2-4 and 7-9pm, from where the funeral service will take place Tuesday June 17th, 2003 with Rev. Charles Bain officiating and Rev. Stuart Steves assisting. Internment to follow at the family plot in the North Head Community Cemetery. At the request of the family donations may be made to the North Head Community Cemetery, Cancer Society, or the North Head Wesleyan Church.

Marjorie Isabelle Sawyer
Marjorie Isabelle Sawyer, 87, of Grand Manan passed away after a brief illness at the Grand Manan Hospital on Thursday, November 21st, 2002. Born in Grand Harbour she was the daughter of the late James and Sophia (Ganong ) Cook of Grand Harbour.
Mrs. Sawyer was a Registered Nurse and spent several years as a nurse in Pediatrics at the Salvation Army Notre Dame DeGrace Montreal, PQ and then moved to Grand Manan to serve at the Grand Manan Hospital. She was a member of St. Paul s Anglican Church, and a very active member of St. Paul s Anglican Church Women and served on the Church Vestry for many years.
Mrs. Sawyer was survived by one sister Alice ( Somers ) Newton ( Phillip ) of Ajax, Ont., one brother Percy Cook (Alice ), of North Head, formerly of Shediac, N.B., several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Sawyer was predeceased by her husband Milford, and two brothers Arlington, and George.
Visitation will be at Ells Funeral Home, Friday 2-4, 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 23rd, at 2. PM with Layreader Kevin Frankland, Interment to follow in the family plot Maple Grove Cemetery. Donations to the Restoration Fund of St. Paul s Anglican Church would be appreciated by the family.

Malcolm Wilson
MALCOLM ARCHIE WILSON, 80 of Grand Harbour, Grand Manan, NB passed away suddenly at the Grand Manan Hospital Friday morning, May 24th. Born in Grand Harbour on September 7, 1921, his parents were Frank and Mary (Wilcox) Wilson also of Grand Harbour. Mr. Wilson served in the Merchant Navy during the 2nd World War. He was also a fishermen, construction worker and also in his career on the water was 2nd Mate on the Grand Manan ferry.
He is survived by his wife Ellen "Bessie" McLean, his daughter Susan (George) Harris of Grand Harbour, 5 adopted children, his granddaughter Kelly Greenough of Worcester, Mass, 13 adopted grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Also survived by his sister Avis (Leighton) Taylor of Castalia and his brother Ross Wilson of North Head, as well as several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by four sisters Mavis, Margaret, Zelia, Muriel and three brothers Jim, Eldred and Dick.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, May 25th, at Ells Funeral Home, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held Sunday, May 26th, from the Grand Harbour United Baptist Church, at 2:30 pm with Pastor Troy Dennis officiating. Interment to follow in the family plot at Maple Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of the donor s choice. Funeral arrangements are in the care of ELLS FUNERAL HOME, 1199 Route #776, Grand Manan.
