GRAY, James Douglas James Douglas (Doug) Gray passed away peacefully at home December 6, 2003 at the age of 85 years. The eldest child of Ruth and Leonard, Doug was born on the family ranch at Cabin Lake Alberta on August 12, 1918. He is survived by Ardis, his loving wife of 59 years, twin daughters Jane Hantos (Zoltan) of Vancouver and Judy Gray (Bob Mah) of Calgary, and one adoring granddaughter, Joanna Hantos, also of Vancouver. He additionally leaves to mourn his loss sister Mabel Rooke (Bill) and brother David (Verda) as well as an extended family of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents as well as two sisters, Jean and Marjorie. Doug's early years were spent on the ranch. Following their marriage in 1944, Doug and Ardis relocated to Toronto where he attended the Radio College of Canada. A return to Alberta in 1948 saw Doug assume employment with Canadian Exploration Company. The nomadic lifestyle of the seismic industry suited Doug to a "t", but in 1950 reality struck with the arrival of twin daughters! The family settled briefly in Hanna and then moved to Calgary. Work in the electronics field was stimulating to Doug and the Calgary experience proved rich in friendships and fine times. The next leg of the journey represented a move to Edmonton with Doug's new career at NAIT. A sabbatical leave to the U of A earned Doug his education certificate and upon its completion he assumed administrative opportunities as Department Head of Food Services. Retirement in 1981 had Doug and Ardis "on the road again" ... this time to a decade of wonderful, warm winters in Arizona. In 1988 they re-established their current permanent residence in Calgary. A well-read intellectual, Doug possessed an ascerbic wit and an appreciation for the "finer things in life". In the mid 1950's while living in Hanna, Doug joined the Fraternal Order of Masons, and at the time of his move to Calgary, also became a Shriner. He was deeply committed to the philanthropic work of the Shrine, as well as a true believer in higher education. He will be sorely missed by all. In Doug's memory the family welcomes donations to the Shriner's Hospital for Children 1529 Cedar Avenue, Montreal Quebec H3G 1A6 or floral tributes. A gathering in honour of Doug's life is planned for Sunday, December 14, 2003 from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. in the Edgemont Room of the Best Western Village Park Inn, 1804 Crowchild Trail NW, Calgary.
