Mary Ellen 'Helen' Abbott (nee Fitzgerald) 1916 2007, passed away peacefully in her 92nd year at the Veteran s Memorial Building, Halifax on July 10, 2007. Predeceased by her husband, Albert Joseph Abbott of Port-au-Port, Newfoundland (1985). Born in Halifax, daughter of Michael Daniel and Jerome Agnes Fitzgerald (nee Woodill); cherished sister of Jean Frances Spencer (George) of Chester, Nova Scotia. Helen was a graduate of the Sacred Heart School, Halifax and the Royal Victoria School of Nursing, Montreal. She enlisted in the Canadian Army and saw World War Two service overseas as a Nursing Sister. With her military husband, there were numerous postings in Canada and overseas which fostered many lifelong colleagues and friends. On retirement, they returned to Port-au-Port, Newfoundland to help run the family business. Helen returned to Halifax in 1990. Helen expressed herself with her artistic talents, which included painting, knitting, and needle point. Helen was a Lady in the truest sense. Her quiet strength and support through adversity was an inspiration to friends and family, including her many loving nieces/grandnieces and nephews/ grandnephews. Helen s family thanks the professional staff who worked on Floor V4E over the years, for their dedication and compassion, and the staff of the Veteran's Memorial Building, Halifax, who very much made the Veteran s Memorial Building Helen s home. A memorial service to celebrate Helen s life will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2007 at the Veteran's Memorial Building Chapel, Halifax followed by a reception. Father Michael Walsh to officiate. Interment to take place at a later date in Port-au-Port Newfoundland. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Joyce (nee Reid); his children: Nelson Jr. (Donna), Lloyd (Alvena), Gladys (Bruce), Rick (Beverly), Jim (Ruby) and Brenda (Karl); 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law Marilyn Cumby and Claudette Reid Ellis; one brother Harold and one sister Ethel.
