DEVEAU, Clarence John - 42, Halifax, formerly of Petit de Grat, died suddenly on August 4, 2007. Born in Petit de Grat, he was a son of the late Joseph Edouard and Sarah Lucienne (Roach) Deveau. He was employed with Metro Community Living at the time of his death. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing. He is survived by siblings, Raymond (Barbara), Eastern Passage; Wayne, Arichat; Gisele Embree, Dartmouth; Thelma Hylton, Orangeville, Ont.; Remi (Darlene), Pomquet; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother, Clary in infancy. No visitation by request. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday, August 9, in St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church (Windmill Road), Dartmouth. Burial will be at a later date in Cheticamp. Family flowers only. MARCHE, Bernice Regis
MARCHE, Bernice Regis - 81, Dartmouth, passed away August 5, 2007, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Indian River, P.E.I., she was a daughter of the late Joseph Murdock and Mary Adeline (Gillis) Gillis. She was a long-time active member of St. Paul's Church. She is survived by children, Marie (Chris) Habgood, Burlington, Ont.; Gerard, Toronto; Vincent (Paulette), Dartmouth; grandchildren, Kelly Murray, Fredericton, N.B.; Ryan Murray, Stoney Creek, Ont.; brother, Edward (Eileen) Gillis, Charlottetown, P.E.I.; sister, Kathleen Gillis, Indian River, P.E.I. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter; brothers, Stephen, Frederick, Bernard, and Camillus; sisters, Beatrice and Florence. Visiting will be 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday in Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen St. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church (Windmill Road). A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will be at a later date in Indian River. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at Dartmouth General Hospital for all their compassion and kindness.
CIPAK, John Stanley "Chippy"
CIPAK, John Stanley "Chippy" - 90, Sydney, died August 5, 2007, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Whitney Pier, he was a son of the late John Stanley and Nellie (Ruainska-Carberry) Cipak. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving in the RCAF, and was a lifelong member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 138, Ashby. Surviving are son John, (Darlene); daughters, Margaret Kellins, Joan Marsh; grandson, Wallace Gouthro, who lived with him; brother, Michael; sisters, Mamie, Frances; grandchildren, Stephen, Ashley, Jordan, Devon, Greg, Wally, Wayne, Shane, Cynthia; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Josephine (Johnston); brothers, Anthony, Stephen, Joseph; sisters, Helen, Vicky. No visitation. Funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Augustine's Church.
MacKINNON, Keith Ian
MacKINNON, Keith Ian - 68, Bridgewater, died August 4, 2007, at home. Born February 12, 1939, in Liverpool, Queens Co., he was a son of the late Robert Kitchener and Margaret Jean (Smiley) MacKinnon. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Lynn (Aitken); sons, Craig David (Yolanda), Thunder Bay, Ont.; Paul Kitchener (Erica), Halifax; grandchildren, David Petteri and Bianca Skye; sister, Shirley Babin, Liverpool; brothers, R.K. (Dorothy Anne), Liverpool; James, Lachute, Que.; nieces and nephews, Frank Babin, Barbara Snarby, Beverley Pettersen, Becky Mason, John MacKinnon, Scott MacKinnon, Shawn MacKinnon; several grandnieces and grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. Ian graduated from Acadia University in 1966 with a diploma in education and was a teacher/principal in Arcadia, Yarmouth Co.; Newcombville, Mahone Bay, and Hebbville, Lunenburg Co., retiring in 1994. He was a member of the Bridgewater Curling Club, Olde Town Golf Club, and the Bridgewater United Church, serving on the Board of Stewards. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 24, Bridgewater. He was an avid hunter and spent many hours at his camp on Turtle Lake, West Caledonia. Cremation has already taken place. Private family Interment in Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater. Memorial service at 2 p.m. Thursday in Bridgewater United Church, Rev. Ivan Norton officiating. A reception to follow. No flowers by request. BISHOP (Spicer), Doris Evangeline
BISHOP (Spicer), Doris Evangeline - 84, passed peacefully on August 3, 2007, with family by her side, in Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown. Doris was born in Kentville, raised in the small Annapolis Valley town of Canning and spent the majority of her life in Halifax. Doris joined the army at the outbreak of the Second World War, where she met, fell in love with and married a dashing sergeant, Frederick Bishop of Halifax. Doris lost Fred tragically in a car accident in September 1978 and her only son, Frank, due to brain cancer in August 2005. Doris is survived by daughters, Joy Hartlen, Middleton; Deborah King, Lawrencetown, Annapolis Co.; Beverley Janson, Annapolis, Md.; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Bruce Spicer, Canning; sisters, Kathleen Randall, Upper Canard; Laura Bell Lewis, London, Ont.; and Pauline Bohanas, Winnipeg. Doris, with her flaming red hair and beautiful smile, was a fixture at Eaton's Cosmetic Department in Halifax for 25 years. Doris represented Elizabeth Arden and was the consummate salesperson using product knowledge and refined people skills to produce leading results. Doris was a "can do" person who exuded class, charm, confidence and true grit. In her later years she was faced with many medical setbacks including heart attacks, strokes, and finally Lewy body dementia. Throughout these illnesses, as throughout her life, Doris was an example of courage, toughness and true dignity, which she maintained to her final hour. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that the gift of time be given to a senior in need of care, company and compassion. Thank you to all of the staff and residents of Mountain Lea Lodge in Bridgetown for their love and caring and for their many kindnesses in the last several days. A private family Interment service will be held on August 10 at 11 a.m. Habitant Cemetery which is located approximately 5 minutes from Canning on the road to Kingsport. A reception for friends and family will be held at 12 p.m. at the Canning Fire Hall.

Loving mother of Yaffa Gruia, Dr. Eva Grunfeld and Louis Grunfeld; and caring mother-in-law of Jerry Gruia, Ronald Clark and Marlene Ostronoff. Devoted grandmother of Kim, Jeffrey, Kayla and Aaron and, joyfully, her new great-grandson Quinn. JONES, Calvin D.
JONES, Calvin D. - 60, Greening Drive, Antigonish, passed away surrounded by his family at home on August 6, 2007, after a two year battle with cancer. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Annie (MacDonald) and the late Norman Jones. Calvin spent the last 37 years in Antigonish. The last ten years of his working life were his most enjoyable because he got to meet and get to know many wonderful people. He was an avid hockey fan and active volunteer with minor hockey. He coached various levels of hockey throughout the past 20 years including his two sons and eldest grandson. He served on the Antigonish Minor Hockey Council. Calvin was an active volunteer in the community with various organizations. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. One of his greatest pleasures in life was spending time with his children and family. He enjoyed being in the outdoors, fishing, hunting, gardening and woodworking. Surviving are his wife, Irma (MacLeod) Jones; children, Loreen Allen (Rob), Antigonish; Marla Barton (Keith), Antigonish; Todd Jones (Stephanie), Trumbull, Conn.; Brian Jones (Amy), Fort Smith, N.W.T.; sister, Norma MacAdam, North Sydney; grandsons, Ryan, Luke, Cple, Logan, and Cohen. Visitation in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish, on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in St. James United Church on Thursday, August 9, at 2 p.m. Burial in St. James/St. Paul Cemetery. KIMMINS, Warwick Charles
KIMMINS, Warwick Charles - 66, Halifax, passed away peacefully at home on August 5, 2007. Warwick was born in London England, the son of the late Charles Horace Kimmins. He is survived by his mother, Eileen May Kimmins of Hounslow Middlesex, London England; his wife, Ruth Kimmins; children, Eliot and Sarah; grandson, Eric. Warwick was a dedicated scientist and academic who graduated with a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of London in 1965. Warwick was appointed as a Professor of Biology at Dalhousie University in Halifax Nova Scotia the same year. As a professor, he is remembered for his enthusiasm, humour and ability to motivate students in areas of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. From 1981 until 1990, he served as Chair of the Biology Department, then as Dean of the Faculty of Science from 1995 until 2000, and as acting vice-president from 1997-1998. After leaving Dalhousie University, Warwick became a co-founder in the successful Halifax biotechnology company Immunovaccine Technologies (IVT) for which he served as President and CEO from 2001-2006, then recently as Chairman on the Board of Directors. It was these later years of scientific research by Warwick and colleagues that led to the development of a vaccine for marine mammals, then the possibility of a vaccine platform with wide reaching health benefits for treatment of human diseases such as cancer and infectious diseases. As a father he was an involved and loving parent, coaching soccer and cross-country running, and a long-time Cub and Scout leader. Warwick was a skilled sportsman and enjoyed spending his downtime with family and friends sailing in the waters surrounding Halifax, playing tennis, skiing, running and golfing. He enjoyed traveling with family and friends to Europe for hiking and skiing holidays. In recent years, he experienced a return to the faith of his youth which was a source of support, comfort and strength as he struggled with cancer. Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Wednesday, August 8, at 10 a.m. in Canadian Martyrs Church, 5900 Inglis St., Halifax. Celebrants will be Father James Mallon, Archbishop T. Prendergast and Archbishop J. Hayes. Reception to immediately follow the mass at Dalhousie University, Arts and Administration Building, Lord Dalhousie Room. O'HANDLEY, Allie
O'HANDLEY, Allie - passed away peacefully on Monday, August 6, 2007, in Sydney. Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of Clara (Bennett) and the late John O'Handley. He will be missed by his loving mother, Clara; brothers, Henry and Cal; sisters, Bev, Elaine, Helen, Lena, Cathy, Rita, and Clara; several nieces and nephews. Besides his father, he was predeceased by his brothers, Jack and Tom. Visitation Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Thursday in Immaculate Conception Church. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
SAUNDERS, Mary Edith
SAUNDERS, Mary Edith - 89, Waverley/Fall River, died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, August 5, 2007, in Melville Lodge Nursing Home, where she resided for the last 10 years. Born in Halifax, Mary Edith was the eldest child of Reginald and Florence (MacDonald) Young. She married Ian Saunders in April of 1940. A loving wife and mother, and a devout Roman Catholic, she centred her life on her husband, family, church and community. Friendly and outgoing and a great organizer, Edith made friends wherever she lived. In the 1950's she was president of Shearwater Home and School, and after moving to Clarkesville, organized card night at Clarkesville School, for the seniors. After moving to Waverley in 1960, Edith and Ian bought and ran Lakeshore Line Ltd., as well as Saunders Fina in Fall River, where Edith is fondly remembered for the silver dollars she gave to her customers for each new baby born in the community. Edith and Ian retired in 1980 to live with their son and his family in Fall River. Edith is survived by her brother, Reginald Young; son, John Saunders; daughter-in-law, Eva Toth; and grandchildren, Peter, Erica, Kristin, and Josh. She was predeceased by her husband, Ian; daughter-in-law, Gisele; her mother and father, Reginald and Florence; and sister, Mildred. A memorial mass celebrating Edith's life will be held in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Fall River on Thursday, August 9, at 11 a.m. with a reception afterwards at the home of John Saunders, 3108 Highway 2, Fall River. The family would especially like to thank the nursing staff at Melville Lodge for their dedication and caring treatment of both Ian and Edith Saunders. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, however, your memories and kind prayers are the best memorial.
TREMILLS, James Archibald "Jim"
TREMILLS, James Archibald "Jim" - 78, died Sunday, August 5, 2007, at home with his immediate family gathered around. Born in St. John's, N.L., he was a son of the late Archibald and Marion (Gruchy) Tremills. Jim was educated at Bishop Field College and Memorial University. He left Newfoundland to complete his Engineering degree at the University of Michigan where he studied Aeronautics. Jim returned to "The Rock" thereafter to work on the highroads for a summer, and then began his career as a scientist at Canadair in Montreal, where he remained for 14 years. In Montreal, he married and started what would grow to be a sizable family, but in 1964, Jim felt the pull of the Atlantic again, and moved to Halifax, resuming his career at the Naval Research Establishment, which became the Defence Research Establishment Atlantic and latterly DRDC Atlantic. Early retirement in 1988 enabled Jim to pursue with vigor his many interests and concerns, especially photography, gardening and support of various environmental and animal welfare organizations. Jim was an ardent oenophile, and was encouraged in his endeavour by his colleagues in The Wine Circle. He was keenly interested in old clocks and time pieces. He appreciated the arts, particularly works of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland paintings, photographs and prints. From his college days he learned to love classical music, and in particular the music of Mozart and Beethoven, and the pipe organ repertoire. He often cooked supper as his wife pursued a bachelor degree in pipe organ performance. Surviving are his wife, the former Barbara Mackey; daughters, Cynthia, Ottawa; Susan and Kate (Kevin Corkum), both of Vancouver; sons, Colin, Halifax; John, Ottawa; Tom (Christine Hamilton), Calgary; granddaughters, Vanessa and Stephanie Mayville, Ottawa; Claire Tremills, Calgary; sister, Shirley (Cecil) Murdoch; nephews, Bob (Michelle) and Doug Murdoch; niece, Allison Parrell (Barry); great-nieces and nephews, Michael, Amanda and Brent. Visitation will be Wednesday at 12-1:30 p.m., followed by funeral service at 2 p.m., in St. Mark's Anglican Church, Rev. Janet Hatt officiating. Burial to follow in All Saints Cemetery, Bedford. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to St. Mark's Church Building Fund or charity of choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Co-operative, Upper Musquodoboit.
