He was a shipwright and worked for many years at John MacKay and Sons shipyard. Surviving are his wife, Verta (Jacklin), Sable River; daughters, Helen, Stella, Donna, all of Halifax; brothers, Fulton (Mabel) Acker, Shelburne; Lincolyn Acker, Oshawa; James (Hazel) Birchtown; sisters, Lena Boudreau, Adelia Mckinley and Helen (Wallace) Webb, all of Shelburne; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, John "Jack" and sisters, Merta Farmer, Vivian Doucette and Ada Acker. Visitation today 3-4 p.m.; funeral service 4 p.m., all in H.M. CARVER, Martha Beatrice - 98, Sackville, formerly of Walden, Lunenburg Co., passed away January 31, 2001, in Melville Lodge, Spryfield. Born in Walden, she was a daughter of the late Freeman and Bertha (Crossland) Zwicker. Surviving are her daughter, Phyllis Shupe, Sackville; sister, Mildred Carver, Stanley Section; grandchildren, Darrel Shupe, Buddy Shupe, Donald Shupe, Derrick Shupe, Theresa Shupe, Gail Hennigar, Karen Hiltz, 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. ANDERSON, Elmer Joseph Hudson - 87, Waterville, Kings County, passed away February 2, 2001, in the D.V.A. Unit, Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born at Bartibog Bridge, NB, he was a son of the late Albert and Margaret (Delaney) Anderson. He was a veteran of the World War II and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Ortona Branch #69; for most of his life he had owned and operated a mixed farm in Waterville. Elmer was a veteran of the Waterville and District Volunteer Fire Department. BROWN, Elspeth "Elsie" Avis - 88, of 93 McFarlane Street, Springhill, passed away on Friday, February 2, 2001 in Highland View Regional Hospital, Amherst, NS. Born in Five Islands, Colchester Co., NS, she was a daughter of the late Charles Harold Jacob and Beatrice Elspeth (Simmons) Clemson. She owned and operated Brown's Flower Shop in Springhill for 37 years; volunteered for various community organizations and was a member of the United Baptist Church, Springhill. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and quilting, rug hooking, baking and most important was her love of family. She was marriage to the Late Wilfred Leland Brown and will be lovingly remembered by sons; Robert (Joan) Brown and Carlyle (Cindy) Brown, all of Springhill and Charles (Patty) Brown, of Enfield, NS; daughters, Shirley (Floyd) Rushton of Wentworth, NS, and Sharon (Cam) Scott of Stratford, Ontario; eleven grandchildren and one great grandson; brother, Charles (Audrey) Lewis of Springhill; two nieces. She was predeceased by a brother, Frank Clemson and grandson, Marc Brown. Visitations will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today from the A.H. Brown Funeral Home in Springhill from where the funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 4, 2001 with the Reverend Brent MacDonald officiating. CONRAD, Allan Bernard "Ab" - 82, of Falmouth, Hants County, passed away suddenly, Wednesday, January 31, 2001 at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Lunenburg he was the son of the late Obediah and Florence (Tanner) Conrad. He was a veteran of Second World War, serving in the 88th BTY 5th L.A.A. Regiment. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Lunenburg. He was a Chef for many years on fishing schooners, as well as at one time, owning a restaurant in Lunenburg. He loved to play guitar, sing and always had a joke to tell. He moved to Windsor from Lunenburg in 1969. He was a member of St. John's Anglican Church, Lunenburg. Surviving is his loving wife of 31 years, Evelyn; sons, David, Allan (Anni), both of Toronto, Ont.; daughter, Wendy, Toronto, Ont.; step-daughter, Judi (Stephen) Baxter-Jones, Falmouth; sister, Rhea Creaser, Lunenburg; granddaughter, Jessi Conrad, Toronto; step-granddaughter, Tara Baxter, Halifax. He was predeceased by his half sister, Grace Cluett; half brothers, Earl in childhood and Melvin. MacLEAN, Ainslie - 76, of Scotsville, Inverness Co., passed away Thursday, February, 1, 2001, at the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital. Born in Scotsville, he was a son of the late Kenena Mac Lean. He was a member of the East Lake Ainslie Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, the former Jean MacKinnon; two step-daughters, Lynda Fraser and Debra MacPherson, both of Camrose, Alta.; two sons, Wayne, California; Brian, Dorchester, N.B.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by one grandson, Brian Jr. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. today in the East Lake Ainslie Presbyterian Church. Interment in the church Cemetery, Rev. Kenneth Allen officiating. CONRAD, Earline Obediah - 87, of 73 Fox St., Lunenburg, passed away Thursday, February 1st, 2001, at the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in First South, he was the son of the late Obediah James and Fanny (Wilkie) Conrad. He worked with National Sea Products, Lunenburg Division retiring after 41 years of service. Earline was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Lunenburg, and a member of Zion Male Choir. He was a member of the Rising Sun Lodge #59 of the IOOF, Lunenburg and in his spare time enjoyed camping and reading. Earline was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by a stepson, Herbert Nelson of Bridgewater; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; eight great great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Mabel (Nelson) Cooper; his stepdaughter, Marjorie Grondin-Abbott; a grandson; three sisters; one brother. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. today at Zion Lutheran Church, Lunenburg, Rev. Douglas Moore officiating. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg. CRISPO, Beatrice Victoria - 98, of the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home and formerly of Havre Boucher, passed away on January 31, 2001, at the Nursing Home. Born in Braintree, Mass., she was a daughter of the late William and Victoria (Fougere) King. She was an active member of her community and a member of St. Paul's Parish C.W.L. She is survived by daughters, Teresa (John) Marko, Philadelphia; Myrtle and Marie, Antigonish; Yvonne (Fernand) Dufour, Dartmouth; Leola (Blake) Connor, Halifax; Leonie (Paul) Almeda, Havre Boucher; Dolores (Lloyd) Leblanc, Port Elgin, Ontario; son, Reverend William, Havre Boucher; 24 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Mark; sons, Robert Leon and James Mark; grandson, Mark Connor; sisters, Rose, Josie, Mabel, Eleanor; brothers, Joe and Robert. DILLMAN, George C. "Dada" - 97, Waverley, passed away January 30, 2001, at home. Born in Meagher's Grant, he was a son of the late Alfred and Sarah (Stevens) Dillman. He had a variety of jobs in his lifetime. He worked as a stevedore during WWII; Montague Gold Mines and the Welland Canal. He operated his own sawmill in Waverley and later did skilled carpentry in many locations. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards, gardening, politics and was also a strong Progressive Conservative. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be sadly missed by all. Surviving are daughters, Ruth Drew, Waverley; Velma Prescott, Ottawa; brother, Elmer, Ingersoll, Ont.; grandchildren, Jayne Drew, Calgary; Elizabeth Verge, Petawawa; Nancy Drew-Lavoie, Ottawa; Darren Drew, Calgary; Mark, Diana, Jonathan Brayshaw, all of Ottawa; great-grandchildren, Kristin, Lauryn, Leah Lavoie, all of Ottawa; Ashley and Morgan Verge, Petawawa; Christopher and Courtney Verge, Calgary; Rayna Brayshaw, Ottawa. DOUCETTE, Marie Catherine - 92, Grosses Coques, Digby County, passed away January 31, 2001, at home. Born at Belliveau Cove, she was a daughter of the late Lennie and Maggie (Saulnier) Belliveau. She was the youngest student to attend Normal College in Truro at the age of 15. She taught in Digby County schools for eight years. Following her husband's retirement from his working life of 6 1/2 years with the Navy, Lurcher Light Ship as well as with the Department of Transportation, they travelled together extensively. She was a founding member of Les Dames Patronesses at which time the CJA Camp project along with many others were launches. She loved singing and playing piano. Surviving are husband, Capt. Ralph A. Doucette, Grosses Coques; daughter, Barbara Leblanc, Comberland, Vancouver Island, B.C.; sons, Paul A. Doucette and Jimmy Doucette, both of Belliveau Cove; sisters, Beatrice Weaver, Villa Acadienne, Meteghan; Evangeline Deveau, Mavillette; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Born in Lunenburg, she was a daughter of the late Garnet and Margaret "Maggie" (Tanner) Rhuland. Margaret was a member of St. John's Anglican Church, Lunenburg and a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #23, Lunenburg. She is survived by her husband, Clement; daughter, Vivian and her husband Edgar Cook of Lunenburg; son, Bruce and his wife Bonnie of Maitland; sisters, Mrs. Mildred Manthorne, Mrs. Daisy Corkum, both of Lunenburg; Mrs. Shirley Mallalieu of St. Mary's, Ontario; and Frances and her husband Ronald Feindel of New Germany; a brother, Freeman and wife Hazel of Lunenburg, three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. LANGILLE, Mabel Josephine - Chance Harbour Rd., Pictou Co., passed away Thursday, February 01, 2001, in the Aberdeen Hospital. Born February 4, 1935 in West River Station, she was a daughter of the late Herbert D. Fraser and Sadie (MacKay) MacKay. Before marriage, she had been employed with Eastern Meat Packers, Quality Cleaners and Sobeys. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarane, Trenton and a former Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the Hillside Girls Club and Nan's 20 Plus Club. Mabel loved children, especially her grandchildren. Surviving are her husband, Lawrence H.; daughter, Gerry Langille, at home; son, Scott (Oswalda), Trenton; grandchildren, Timothy, Jeremy; sisters, Marie, Ontario; Marion, Halifax; Jean (Warren), Little Egypt; Edith (Fred) Baines, New Glasgow; brother, Robert, Trenton. She was predeceased by a sister in infancy; brothers, Johnson, Daniel, Edward and Les. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. today in Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Douglas Herbert officiating. Born in Little Dover, he was a son of the late Daniel and Annie (Harnish) Munroe. He was a retired labourer formerly employed at the Halifax Shipyard and also in Toronto. He is survived by daughters, Joan Ann Bugg (Scott), Sutton, Ontario; Theresa (Chris) Toronto; sisters, Ada Ryan, Belleville Ont; Valeria Bouchie (Martin) Little Dover; brothers, Tommy, Toronto; Ernie (Nina), Frank (Genesta), all of Little Dover; Lawrence (Rose) Canso. He was predeceased by wife Dorothy; sister, Marie Marshall; brothers, Garfield (WWII), Alonzo, Lauchie, Lloyd. No visitation, cremation has taken place. O'KEEFE, John Charles - 80, East Uniacke, passed away January 30, 2001 in Hants Community Hospital. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late John and Clara (Platt). He served in the Second World War. He was a firefighter at the Dockyard and later owned and operated Esso Service Stations in Bedford and Halifax. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 95, Bedford. He enjoyed playing the banjo at his Friday night get-togethers. Surviving are his wife, the former Olive Miller; daughters, Janice Nicoll and husband, Barry, East Uniacke; Sandra Bezanson and husband, Chuck, Timberlea; sister, Helen Draper, Halifax; grandchildren, John, Pamela and Amanda. He was predeceased by sisters, Mary Gillis, Audrey Richmond and a half-brother. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home. PARKER, Nellie Emma - 99, of Windsor, Hants County, formerly of Scotch Village, Hants County, passed away Friday, February 2, 2001, peacefully at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Scotch Village, Hants County, she was a daughter of the late George and Mary-Ann (Cross) Parker. Until recent years, she was able to remain independent in her own home with her sister, Elsie. She had a tremendous memory, and loved to tell stories of her early years. She is survived by her sisters, Elsie, Windsor; Ethel (Roy) Chisholm, Dartmouth; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sister, Abbie, Mrs. Danford Smith; Millie, Mrs. William Colbert; Ethel in childhood; brothers, George, Herman and Calvin. PENDER, Jean Bernadette - Halifax, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2001, at Saint Vincent's Guest House. Born in New Ross, Lunenburg Co., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Kathleen (Lyons) Boylan. She attended Mount St. Vincent Academy, St. Francis Xavier University and was a graduate of Mount St. Vincent College. After graduation, she taught at the Mount College and the Halifax County Vocational High School. Jean was a long-time active member of the Mount St. Vincent Alumnae Association, the Waegwoltic, Ashburn Golf Club and the Halifax Curling Club. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Pender; brother, Basil. Surviving are two daughters, Sheila Pender-Wedge, Halifax and Carole Ann Robinson, Sunnybrae, Pictou Co.; four grandchildren, Paula M. Wedge, Halifax; William H. "Bill" Robinson III and wife Christine, West Hartford, Conn.; Renee Staples and husband David, Shelburne; Frank P. Surviving are her sister, Eileen Donovan, Glace Bay; a brother, Russell, Vancouver, B.C.; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers, Leo, Raymond, Basil. PUGSLEY, Fred Seaman - 87, of Cambridge, Hants Co., passed away on January 31, 2001, in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Economy, he was the son of the late Herman and Edith (Taylor) Pugsley. He worked for the Bass River Chair Co., for many years. After retiring, he moved in with his sister Emily, 22 years ago. Surviving is sister, Emily Lake, Cambridge; half sister, Madelene, Ontario; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by sisters, Hattie and Bessie; brothers, Hilbert and Victor. REID, Alice Margaret - passed away peacefully on February 1st, 2001, at the Shiretown Nursing Home, Pictou in her 87th year. Born in River John, she was a daughter of the late Sherman and Amanda (Dwyer) Sillers. Although she had lived at the Shiretown Nursing Home since 1990, she and her husband Merril lived most of their lives on the Gunn Road, River John. She was a member of St. George's Presbyterian Church and was a devout church worker. She served as superintentant of the Sunday School for several years and was a CGIT leader, Leader of the Young People's Society and of the Vacation Bible School. She also was a member of Welsford Ladies' Aid. Besides her husband, Merril, who resides at the Mira Nursing Home, Truro, she is survived by daughters, Ruth (Wayne) Drew, Porter's Lake; Joan (Russell) Graham, Scotsburn, Pictou Co.; son, Robert (Isabel), Abercrombie; brother, Canon Ernest Sillers, California; as well as seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Predeceased by sisters, Violet, Amanda; brothers, Sherman, Ross, Alton and Hibbert. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. today, February 3rd, 2001, at St. George's Presbyterian Church, Rev. Jeanette Fleischer officiating. Spring burial in Hamilton Cemetery, River John. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. George's Presbyterian Church Fund.
SMITH, Ira Frederick "Ted" - 80, of East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash, Cumberland County and formerly of Truro, passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2001, in the North Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Pugwash. Born in Harmony, Colchester County, he was a son of the late Richard and Minnie (Pyke) Smith. He was a service station attendant in Ontario for many years. He was an adherent of the First United Church, Truro. He is survived by his wife, the former Sevilla Ruth Delaney; son, Gregory of Ontario; sister, Helen Cook of Truro. He was predeceased by several brothers and sisters. Funeral service 2 p.m. today, in the Mattatall Funeral Home, Truro, with burial at a later date in the Crossroads Cemetery, Valley. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash or to a charity of your choice.
SMITH, Violet Maude - 91, of Halifax, passed away peacefully February 2, 2001 at the Veteran Memorial Centre, in Halifax, after a lengthy illness. She was born in Bedford, NS, and lived in Churtsey, Surrey, England, during the first World War. She was a daughter of the late Bert and Margaret Maude Lock. She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest J., a sister, Evelyn, Windsor, Ontario; a brother, Henry, Bedford. She is survived by her son, Robert and daughter in law, Janet, Waverley; grandsons, Andrew (Patricia), Bedford; Ian (Linda), Waverley; great granddaughters, Kristen and Rachel, Waverley "those dear little girls"; a sister, Margaret Fraser, Dartmouth; several nieces and nephews. Her love, warmth and ready wit will be sadly missed. Memorial service Tuesday 11 a.m. in Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen Street, Archdeacon Paul Smith officiating. Private family burial will follow. TURNER, Lillie Gladys - 98, Grafton, Kings Co., passed away January 30, 2001, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, surrounded by her loved ones. Born in Grafton, she was a daughter of the late Starrett and Jennie (Vaughn) Sanford. She had lived most of her life in the Grafton area and was a member of the Grafton Baptist Church. For the past several years she has resided in the Fundy Villa Apartments and most recently in the Grafton area and was a member of the Grafton Baptist Church. Surviving are sons, George (Eva) Turner, Grafton; Clark Turner, Coalbranch, NB; Allison (Faye) Turner, Cambridge, Kings Co.; daughter, Jennie Mahar, Garland, Kings Co.; 13 grandchildren; several great grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Stanley Turner; daughter, Violet Hines; granddaughter, Kimberley Turner; son-in-law, Allison Mahar; sister, Annie Pye; brothers, Albert, Earl, Charles and Walter Sanford. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, February 3, 2001, in the Grand View Manor, Berwick. Rev. Leo Fletcher officiating. VYE, George Norman - 90, of Middleton, passed away January 29, 2001, at Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Digby, he was a son of the late Charles and Rhoda (Cummings) Vye. He received his education in Middleton and Acadia University. He was a member of Middleton United Baptist Church, life member of Middleton Ionic Lodge, former member of Middleton Town Council, part of the management team of Thompson's Transfer Company, Middleton. He was also employed with Irving Oil, Schooner Outfitting Company, Halifax, operated a service station in Wilmot and Vye's Fashion Shop, Middleton. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking. Surviving are daughter, Carol Mitchell, Middleton; sisters, Anna Lincoln and Dorothy Vye, both of Kingston, Ont.; grandchildren, Brian Mitchell and Shari Lapena, both of Toronto; great-grandson, Christopher Lapena. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Helen McNally; son, Graham. Funeral service 2 p.m. today, all at the Warren T. Roop Funeral Home, Middleton, Rev. Dr. Byron Fenwick and Rev.
