Hilary (Brud) Brown, 66, of New Victoria, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1998, at his residence. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Hilary and Alice (White) Brown. He was a member of St. Joseph's Parish, New Victoria, he was retired from N.S. Power and was a Veteran of the Korean War.
Surviving are two sons, Michael (Lisa), Truro, Paul, Orillia, Ont.; two brothers, George, New Victoria, Hilary (Campbell), Sydney; three sisters, Agnes Bolan, Hamilton, Ont., Theresa McGillivray, New Waterford, Vivian Service, Wiarton, Ont.; one grandson, Liam. He was predeceased by his wife, Pauline (Deveaux), a brother, Senley.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Thursday, 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church with Fr. Everett MacDow officiating. Burial in St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Victoria Mines.

Ralph Canning
76, Sydney
Ralph Canning, 76, of Harold Street, Sydney, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at the Halifax Infirmary.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late John and Jessie (MacVicar) Canning. He was employed with CN Railway in Sydney and Halifax where he retired in 1986. He was a member of St. Andrews Church, CN Pensioners Club and Kiwanis Cape Breton Golden K. He was an avid sports fan, and was active in bowling, golfing and curling and he coached little league.
He was a veteran of the Second World War serving overseas with the 8th Canadian Light Antiaircraft Regiment. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 12, Sydney.
He is survived by his wife, the former Betty Darby; two daughters, Arlene, Sydney and Judy (Mrs. Barry MacLeod), Port Hood; one son, Gary, Halifax; one sister, Anna Keys, Sydney and two brothers, Norman and Gordon, Sydney. He was the loving grandfather of Alison and Shannon. He was predeceased by five brothers, Ray, John, Earl, Harry and Ervin.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Andrews Church with Rev. Allan McIntosh officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association or the Children's Wish Foundation.
Madison Englert and Morgan Englert
Alpine, Tex.
Madison Englert, age 6, and Morgan Englert, age 3, of Alpine, Tex., died Sunday, Dec, 27, 1998, in Edmonton, as a result of a car accident.
They are survived by their parents, Thomas and Leeanne (MacMullin) Englert; their maternal grandparents, Leo and Rosemary (MacDougall) MacMullin, Peace River, Alta., formerly of Sydney Mines, their paternal grandparents, Ralph and Nelda Englert, San Angelo, Tex., their great-grandmothers, Marjorie MacMullin, Sydney Mines and Christena MacDougall, Edmonton. Also surviving are several aunts and uncles and grandaunts and granduncles.
The funeral will take place in San Angelo, Tex.

Bert Fountain
78, Stratford, Ont.
Mrs. Bertha Hill Fountain, 78, of 536 Brunswick St., Stratford, passed away peacefully at the Stratford General Hospital Monday, Dec. 28, 1998.
She was born in Florence, N.S. into a loving Cape Breton family, daughter of the late George Unsworth and the former Jane Hill.
Bert entered nursing after high school at the age of 17 and received her Registered Nurse Diploma from the New Waterford Hospital in 1942 and went on to work as a nurse at the Stratford General Hospital from May of 1947 until January of 1984 where her dedication and hard work earned her an excellent reputation as a nurse. She was a member of the Stratford Ladies Cribbage League, having won first place at the championships in April of 1988, was a member of the Lakeside Seniors Association and a lifelong member of Parkview United Church. She enjoyed card playing, knitting, was a sports fan and loved her family dearly.
She is the beloved wife of the late Gordon Henry Fountain who predeceased her on Nov. 7, 1992. Loving mother of Gordon and his wife Karren and devoted grandmother of Shawna, Bryce and Jenna, all of Abbotsford, B C. Dear sister of Arthur Unsworth and wife Sadie, Florence, N.S. and sister-in-law of Myrtle Walsh and husband Pat, Dorothy Wreford and husband Verd, Doreen Bloomfield, Lorraine Leckie and husband Red, Muriel Johnston and husband Jim, Wally Fountain and wife Betty, Helen and Ruth Fountain. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Karyn Jane, brothers and sisters, Polly Knott, Vera Collins, Peter Unsworth, Edith Keene, Horace Unsworth and May MacDonald, brothers-in-law, Doug and Wilfred Fountain and by a sister-in-law, Joy Fountain.
Cremation. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Bert will be held at Parkview United Church, Stratford on Wednesday, Dec. 30, at 3 p m. Rev. Margaret Smith will officiate.
Interment will be in Avondale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and as expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Stratford General Hospital or to the Arthritis Society through the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron St., Stratford. (519) 271-7411.

Norma Jean (Hanna) Hall, 50, of 143 Juniper St., Sydney, formerly of Halifax, died suddenly Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of Mrs. Winnie (Carson) Hanna of Sydney and the late Joseph (Ace) Hanna.
She is survived by one daughter, Marilyn, Sydney; one brother, Tony, Sydney.
She was predeceased by her brother, Paddy, a sister, Marilyn and a daughter, Sheri Lynn.
There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. Theresa's Church with the Rev. A. MacDougall officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks under the direction of T.W. Curry Ltd.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Sheri Lynn Hanna, 25, of 143 Juniper St., Sydney, formerly of Halifax, died suddenly Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998.
Born in Winnipeg, Man., she was the daughter of Gerald Fogarty of Sydney and the late Norma Jean Hanna.
She is survived by her grandmother, Mrs. Winnie (Carson) Hanna; one sister, Marilyn, Sydney; one uncle, Tony, Sydney.
She was predeceased by her uncle, Paddy and aunt, Marilyn, her mother, Norma Jean and her grandfather, Joseph (Ace) Hanna.

Roderick Francis (Rod) Herney

Roderick Francis (Rod) Herney, 44, of 191 Beach Rd., Eskasoni, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998 at his home.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Noel and Julia (Paul) Herney. He was a member of the Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni. Rod was a volunteer fireman with the Eskasoni Fire Department for the past 16 years and he was also a hospital taxi driver for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Roxanna; four daughters, Kissy, Jeannie, Julia and Donna, all at home; three sons, Kenny, Junior, both of Eskasoni and Noel, at home; three sisters, Linda, Janet and Louise, all of Eskasoni; five brothers, Tom, Mike, Angus, Randall and John, all of Eskasoni and eight grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two grandchildren, Kendra and Thomas, one sister, Mary Catherine, two brothers, Noel Joseph and Peter Joseph.
The late Mr. Herney will have visitation at the family residence on Thursday after 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Family Church, Eskasoni with the Rev. Robert MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish Cemetery under the direction of T.W. Curry Ltd.
Genevieve Elizabeth MacDonald

Genevieve Elizabeth MacDonald, 68, of Prince Street, Sydney, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at the Breton Bay Nursing Home.
Born in Florence, she was a daughter of the late William and Ethel (Cresser) Fry. She was a member of St. Stephen Parish, Sydney.
She is survived by one son, Neil and his wife, Elizabeth, Sydney; one grandson, Joshua; one sister, Marion (Mrs. Ivan MacDonald), Sydney; three brothers, James and Clarence, both of Florence and Reginald, Sydney Mines.
He was predeceased by her husband, Neil, in 1993, one son, John and several sisters and brothers.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in St. Stephen Church 10 a.m. Thursday with Rev. Glenn Kent officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Helen Elizabeth MacDougall, 62, died peacefully Friday, Dec. 18, 1998, at the Toronto East General Hospital, Toronto, Ont.
Beloved wife of Melvin; loving mother of Darlene, Ellen and her husband Mark, Bernie and his wife Louise; dear grandmother of Tanya, Jenna, Kelsie and Michelle; loving daughter of Frank; dear sister of Dolores and David.
Friends were received at the Ingram Funeral Home, Toronto. Funeral mass of the resurrection took place at St. Joseph's Church, Toronto.
The remains were transferred to T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, for visitation today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Crisella (Ferguson) MacInnis

Crisella (Ferguson) MacInnis, of 50 Jamieson St., Sydney, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret (MacKeigan) Ferguson. She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney.
She is survived by three daughters, Lucy (Mrs. Russell MacKinnon), Sydney, Jane (Mrs. Gordon Brown), Bedford, N.S. and Nancy (Mrs. John Tynski), Sydney; seven grandchildren, Russell, Heather, Gordon, Graham, John, Krista and Kate; two sisters, May (Mrs. Hugh MacDonald), Bristol, Que. and Ada (Mrs. Carl O'Callaghan), Sydney and two brothers, Charlie, Birmingham, England and Kelly, Sydney.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence in 1972 and three brothers, Donald, Stewart (Duke) and John.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel with Rev. Neil J. MacLean officiating.
Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Roy Holmes MacQueen
70, The Points, West Bay
Roy Holmes MacQueen, 70, of The Points, West Bay and a former longtime resident of Dominion, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in Bridgeport, he was the son of the late Peter and Margaret (MacRae) MacQueen. He was a member of Black River United Church.
He was employed by Imperial Oil in Sydney for 40 years, during which time, he served for many years as spokesperson for the Terminal Industrial Council.
For many years Roy was a well known musician in the Sydney area and in recent years in Richmond and Inverness counties. He was a member of West Bay Entertainers, Richmond County Fiddlers Association and devoted much of his time to church and charitable events. Roy was also a member of Richmond County Advisory Committee.
An avid fisherman, Roy loved the Bras d'Or Lakes and will be sadly missed by his many friends and relatives of the area.
He is survived by sisters, Margaret Sellars, Oakville, Ont. and formerly of New Waterford and Rita Gillis, Lower Sackville; a brother, James MacQueen, Glace Bay; seven grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a dear friend, Jenny Simpson, Orangedale; a loving cousin, Georgie MacDonald, Donkin and a beloved pet and constant companion, Tiny.
He was predeceased by brothers, Roderick and George.
There will be no visitation. Funeral service will be held at Black River United Church, 2 p.m. Thursday with Rev. Keith Adams officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held at St. George's Channel Community Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury.
