THEILMANN, Timothy (Tim) Born August 21, 1948. Died of cancer June 17, 2000, at his home on Thetis Island, B.C., surrounded by those he loved. Beloved husband of Sue, father of Helen and Angelina (mother Ruby), step-father to Amy and Andrew, son of Helga and the late John Theilmann and brother to Iver (Pam), Deanna, Michael (Maren), Sarah (Tom), David (Jane) and uncle to numerous Alcock, Hlady and Theilmann nephews and nieces. Great Uncle to Soleyma. Tim crammed many lifetimes into the space of one: master mariner, house-builder, wine maker, world traveller, Velocette enthusiast, Search & Rescue hovercraft Captain for the Canadian Coast Guard, and finally, his proudest accomplishment, owner-operator, with his wife Sue, of Thetis Air, a float plane operation travelling between the Gulf Islands and Vancouver. He never saw obstacles, only challenges. This was a man who seized the day and lived every moment to the fullest. Nowhere was this more apparent that during the last year and half, as, with humour, dignity and courage, he played out the hand that fate had dealt him. Nothing so became him in life as the manner of his leaving it. Happy landings Tim. Your friends and family will always love and remember you. It was Tim's wish that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Thetis Island Parent's Association for an adventure playground. (Box 14-1, Thetis Island, B.C., V0R 2Y0). TOLMIE, J. Ross, B.A., B.A. and B.C.L. (Oxon), LL.D., Q.C. Born 24 August 1908, died Saturday, 17 June 2000 at UBC Purdy Pavilion, after a lengthy illness. Through his illness he was supported and comforted by his wife, Helene, and by his children and their spouses: Anne (Connla Wood), John (Judy), Ken (Patsy), Phil (Flo), Dan and Lulu (John Leathley). He will be fondly remembered by his twelve grandchildren: Jeanne (Chris Pilling), Sara (Nathan Webb), Emily, Nicole, Fraser, Derek (Lisa), Natalie, Carroll, Lizanne, Peter Leathley, Steven Leathley, Ross Leathley, and by three great-grandchildren: Lucy Pilling, Katelyn Webb, and Megan Tolmie. Ross was born in Hartney, Manitoba, the eldest son of Dr. J.A. Tolmie and Maude (Ross). He was predeceased by his sister, Jean Odlum, and by his brother, Bill Tolmie. Ross was educated at the University of British Columbia, where he served as President of the Alma Mater Society, and at Oxford University where he held a Rhodes Scholarship. In 1932 he was called to the British Columbia bar and set up his law practice in Stanley, across from the Lightning Creek General Store which he ran with Roger Odlum and Alfie Watts, in the Cariboo region of B.C. In 1935 Ross was appointed to the Department of National Revenue in Ottawa. While in this position he wrote a manuscript on current Canadian income tax law and it was published by Commerce Clearing House, a well-known American publisher, in 1939. He donated the royalties to the Crown as a contribution to the war effort. In 1941 Ross was appointed Solicitor to the Treasury, where he was engaged in large measure in the drafting of war-time financial legislation. He was called to the Ontario bar in 1945 and began private practice with the founding of Herridge, Tolmie, Gray, Coyne and Blair, an Ottawa-based law firm which specialized in cross-Canada corporate law. Between 1949 and 1958 Ross was instrumental in the incorporation and organization of the TransCanada PipeLine Company. He was privileged to serve as counsel to many Canadian corporations. In 1954 he was appointed Queen's Counsel. Ross was appointed Chair of the Canada-United States Committee of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in 1958-59. He was invited to become a consultant and advisor to the annual Seminars on Canadian-American Relations held at Assumption University in Windsor, Ontario. Ross became Chair of the Advisory Board for the Seminars for two years and was awarded an LL.D. by Assumption University in 1962 for his leadership. During these years in Ottawa he was a founding member of the Five Lakes Fishing Club, of the Cerle Universitaire, and of the Ottawa Round Table. He was instrumental in the founding of the C.D. Howe Institute and was a life-long member of the Rideau Club. Ross served as President of numerous organizations, including the Ottawa Chapter of the Canadian Club and the Rockcliffe Park Conservation Association. Ross also served on the Board of Directors of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and aided in the financial re-structuring of its journal. The Tolmie family would like to thank the physicians, nursing staff and caregivers of the UBC Hospital and of the Purdy Pavilion, as well as our private "angels", Lori, Lourdes, Pia, Myrna and Maridel. PEARCE, Wayne Sandford (W/C RCAF, retired) Born March 7, 1915 in Saskatchewan, died peacefully October 6, 2000 at Ottawa Civic Hospital with his loving wife Laura at his side. His life was marked by extraordinary achievement and contribution to his family, friends, community and country. He grew up in Vancouver, B.C. and assumed the mantle of protector, provider, supporter and counselor at an early age. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1938 and began a spectacular career in photo reconnaisance. His unit was one of the first to be established in Normandy in 1944. He was in the forefront of the march across Europe including the liberation of Holland and advance to Germany. His group was one of the first to relieve the Belsen concentration camp. He was appointed to Farnborough, England, in 1946 to oversee the evaluation of captured technical war material. He returned to Canada to develop new photo reconnaissance technology and was a prime mover in the first complete air mapping of the country. Wayne retired as a Wing Commander in 1964 and moved to Saltspring Island, B.C. He embarked on a second career as house builder, real-estate professional, member of the Real-estate Board of Variance, sailor, historian, teacher, opera lover, Commodore (1988) of the Saltspring Island Sailing Club, member of the Canadian Power Squadron, supporter of the Federation of Canadian Artists, ArtSpring benefactor and Ham radio operator. He was a mentor, friend, advocate, sponsor and enthusiastic patron of his grandchildren and many other young people. His boundless enthusiasm and contemporary interests led him to perform countless acts of unconditional help. He leaves a legacy of integrity, intellectual discipline, generosity, patriotism and an unwavering commitment to his family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of fifty four years, Marguerite in 1993. Wayne's ability to embrace the challenge and privilege of life was rewarded by his finding a new companion late in his life. He married Laura on August 12, 2000 and celebrated a profound union of grace and love. He is survived by his wife Laura, his daughters Patricia and Kathleen, their husbands Tom Hood and Roger Kibble, his grandchildren, Ellen, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Steven, Aimee and Wendy, his sister Jean, and his many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered. A memorial service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church on Salt Spring Island, B.C., on Saturday, October 21, 2000.

RUST, Dr. Velma Irene Beloved wife of the late Dr. Ronald Stuart Rust, passed away peacefully at the Civic Hospital in Ottawa on October 11, 2000. Since her sudden change in health two and a half years ago, she had been lovingly cared for by her nephew Kendel and his wife Michelle. Velma was born in Edmonton, Alberta on May 22, 1914 to Cecil Johnstone and Lillie (Runions) Miller. Between the years 1934 and 1947 she received her B.Sc; B.Ed; and MEd. degrees from the University of Alberta followed by her Ph.D. in 1959 from the University of Illinois. Her professional career was varied, reflecting her wide ranging interests and talents. Prior to 1960 she was a high school teacher, and administrative assistant at the University of Alberta, an assistant professor of Education at the University of Alberta and a graduate assistant at the University of Illinois. Since 1960 and until her retirement in 1979 she held different and challenging positions in three different areas of the public service as well as lecturing at Carleton University. She married Ron in Edmonton, Alberta on April 9, 1955. Together they enjoyed thirty fulfilling years, much of it taken up with many achievements in their professional lives, taking active membership in MacKay United Church and world-wide travels prior to his passing on July 16, 1984. Velma was an ardent golfer, tennis player and genealogist with a passion for duplicate bridge and gardening. She is survived by sister-in-law Sophie Rust and Edith Miller as well as six nieces and nephews and their families. We will remember Velma as a distinguished, courteous, intelligent and witty woman who valued her many friends and appreciated her family.
