It is with deep sorrow that the family of the late Stjepan (Steve) Plesa of Fanshaw Street, announce his passing on Saturday, July 27, 2002 at St. Joseph's Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Steve was born on October 11, 1920, the first of nine children born to Jure and Lozarija (Spoljaric) Plesa, in Gornji Kosinj, Lika, Hrvatska. In April of 1941 when the Independent State of Croatia was established, he joined the Ustasa units of the Croatian Armed Forces. When in May of 1945 the communist forces entered Croatia, he was one of thousands who fled to the hoped for sanctuaries in Austria. Tragically, there the Allies turned thousands over to the communists and watched as the massacre began on a field near the Austrian town of Bleiburg. Those who survived endured persecutions and death marches. Steve escaped that fate and managed to find his way into Belgium from where after a few years he emigrated to Canada and Port Arthur in the fall of 1951.
After working a season in the forest industry around Hearst, he came to town and with like-minded compatriots organized the first Croatian Independence Day commemoration on April 10, 1952. Soon after that same group formed a benevolent society named "Cardinal Alojsius Stepinac" to raise donations for the disabled Croatian war veterans in Italy and Austria. In the fall of 1957 this society linked up with similar groups to form United Croats of Canada, Branch "Dr. Ante Starcevic". Internationally, they came under the umbrella of the Croatian Liberation Movement (H.O.P.) Steve served as the President of the local branch from its inception in 1952 to the early 1980's. His and wife Antonia's home welcomed many Croatian newcomers.
While the branch helped establish the Croatia Soccer Club and its members aided in the purchase of a church for the Croatian catholic community, its greatest achievement was the construction of the Croatian Canadian Recreation Centre "Velebit" on Alton Road.
Steve married Antonia Spoljaric with whom he had two children in Croatia, daughter Ann and son Steve. In 1957 he succeeded in bringing them over to Canada where they were blessed with two more children, daughter Rosemary and son Anthony.
From the mid sixties to his retirement in 1985 Steve was employed by the Abitibi Provincial Paper Mill.
Steve was very devoted to his family. In his retirement he enjoyed gardening, cooking, relaxing in the sun and taking walks to the park with his grandchildren. Throughout his life he relished being in the company of friends.
Steve was predeceased here by wife Antonia on July 19, 1988, parents Jure and Lozarija Plesa, sisters Maca and Dragica all in Croatia and grandson Kristofer Dosen here. He is survived by four children, Ann (Albert) Grgurich, Steve, Rosemary (Paul) Dosen and Anthony with wife Sanja. Also survived by six grandchildren, Gary Grgurich and Linda (Mart) Grgurich-Klepp, Paul and Lidija Dosen and Antea-Danja and Monica Plesa. He also leaves behind one great-grandson, Devin Klepp. Surviving in Croatia are sisters Franjica, Anka, Kate and Marija as well as brothers Milan and Joso and their children.
Funeral service for the late Stjepan (Steve) Plesa, will be held on Thursday, August 1 2002, with family and friends assembling at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Croatian Catholic Church, 479 Oliver Road, for Funeral Mass at 11:00 am, celebrated by Fr. Francisco Blaseck. Interment to follow beside his wife in St. Andrew's R.C. Cemetery. Visitation for friends will be on Wednesday evening from 6-9:00 pm with Vigil Prayers offered at 7:30 pm in the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind would be greatly appreciated.
Dragi Dida, za uvjek u nasim srcima.

It is with great-sadness that the family of Mrs. Gloria Marie Kraft, age 70 years, a resident of North Court Street, announces her passing. Gloria died in the loving hands of her family in St. Joseph's Hospice on Sunday, September 29, 2002 following a dignified struggle with cancer.
Gloria was born into the family of Emma and Jacob Baechler in Waterloo, Ontario on August 4, 1932. She was employed by BF Goodrich for a short period of time before she met her future husband Alex Kraft. After marrying in Kitchener, Gloria and Alex returned to Alex's hometown of Thunder Bay where they enjoyed a deeply loving marriage of fifty one years. She was an active member of Knox United Church. Gloria loved her church and spent countless hours knitting, baking, phoning and providing many services for the church, and she especially enjoyed the fellowship in the Friendly Circle women's group.
Gloria also took pleasure in many different activities, including volunteering and socializing at the 55 Plus Centre, swimming with the gang at Volunteer Pool and attending the different RCNA functions with Alex.. She thoroughly loved going out to lunch with her girlfriends. Maintaining friendship was important to her. What made Gloria so happy was that her friendship was returned to her in many ways during the last two years through the boundless cards, letters, phone calls and visits. Utmost to Gloria was the love of her family. Her husband Ike was the apple of her eye; her three girls were blessed to have a loving mother and great-friend; her seven grandchildren, who knew her as Lolly, loved her deeply.
Gloria will be forever loved by her husband Alex; daughters: Karen (Tod) Kraft-Sloan of Beeton, Ontario, Joan (Allan) Kraft-Bietz of Calgary and Alexandra (Don) Kraft-Willson of Thunder Bay. She will be lovingly remembered by grandchildren: Jessica and Patrick Sloan, Kyle and Curtis Bietz, Tyler, Emily and Cameron Willson and by her beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Jacob and Emma Baechler; sisters Loretta Wahl, Florence Rejesky; brothers Ed and Clarence Baechler.
Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, October 3rd at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev. David Silliman of Knox United Church. Private interment will take place in Riverside Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in Gloria's memory to the St. Joseph's Foundation of Thunder Bay - HOSPICE, 63 Carrie Street, P7A 4J2.
