February 03, 2003
Mrs. Beatrice Julianna Klukie (nee deWit), age 76 years, of 124 Carl Avenue, Thunder Bay, passed away on Sunday, February 2nd, 2003. Our beloved mother and grandmother passed away at home with her family by her side, on Sunday morning after a five month courageous battle with cancer. Mom was born in 1926 in Groningen, the Netherlands and immigrated to Canada when she was six years old. She and her family lived in Hamilton, Cochrane, Geraldton and eventually Port Arthur. While working at Wainio's General Store on Red River Road, she met her husband John Klukie. They were married in 1947 and together they raised their family of six children in Thunder Bay. Mom was strong, resilient, always worked hard and loved us with all her heart. She instilled values in all her children for which we are so grateful and that we hope we ve passed on to our own children. You did good Mom was something we told her often. The last twenty years were especially good to her and she enjoyed every one of them. She will be remembered as the best Mom, Nana and Mother-in-law. Family meant everything to her and it became an extended one with all the children she babysat through the years: Amy, Ian, Jamie, Wes, Kyle, and Mark. They became special grandchildren to her and she a special Nana to them. Mom was loving, patient and dependable, yet stern and consistent at the same time. She was an important part of each of their lives. She was thankful for and loved her special friends and neighbors: Olga, Ingrid, Helmi and Mickey from Carl Avenue. The highlite of Mom's week was Saturday when she joined her best friends for coffee, scratch tickets, shopping at Zellers and then lunch with her girls and grandchildren. Mom enjoyed our annual summer treks to Wabigoon to visit Lori and Gary and their boys, but was always glad to come home and sleep in her own bed. She loved to read, made the best perogies and raspberry jam, and played a mean game of checkers. The simplest things in life gave Mom the greatest pleasure. Beatrice was predeceased by her parents, husband Johnny in 1985 and one son Patty in 1958. Left to mourn and miss her are six children and their spouses: Rick and Donna Klukie, Cathy and Jim Shewchuk, Janice and Karl Heinicke, Lori and Gary MacNeil, Linda Klukie, Jacki and Dino Bruni; seventeen grandchildren: Pat Klukie and Catriona McMullen and Ashley Klukie of Winnipeg, enroute, Lindsey and Matthew Vaillant, Lee, Jay, Bill and Brett Shewchuk, Heather (S. In their hearts my loving family know and feel what kind of Mother and parent I was. I tried to be the best that I could be." In her own words "I praise and thank God my Father for having blessed me with the loving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren He so lovingly entrusted me with." Mom was a good wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother (Nanny) and a faithful and caring friend to all who knew her. Mom's family was her main priority in life. One of Mom's special bible quotes - Hebrews, IX 27- " And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement." The following is a verse found in a list of Mom's last wishes - "Death is the last chapter of time, but the first chapter of eternity."
Mothers Day
Once a young, single girl
With wishes and dreams galore
I hope those days were good for you
See if you can recall them once more
Did you ever dream back then
Of the future that was ahead
Of the day you would say yes to a man
On the day that you would wed
From your union you would bring forth life
A child from within you
A gift from God by which He is saying
"In trust, this child I give to you"
Now you can say your dreams have come true
In more ways than one
God sure had faith in you
He shared with you many daughters and sons
You do deserve the precious word
Of being called a Mother
And all your children can say
Is that we're glad we had no other
So Mother on this special day
We would like to say to you
We love you now and for eternity
This love is strong and true
By Glenn Upton on behalf of the whole family

On January 30, 2003 God took our little angel home. McKenzie Lola-Gayle was born January 20, 2003.
You Never Said Goodbye
You never said I'm leaving
You never said goodbye
You were gone before I knew it,
And only God knew why
A million times I needed you,
A million times I cried
If love alone could have saved you,
You never would have died
In life I loved you dearly
In death I love you still
In my heart you hold a place,
That know one could ever fill
It broke my heart to lose you,
But you didn't go alone
For part of me went with you,
The day God took you home.

Marek, George Thomas
February 05, 2003
George Thomas Marek passed away peacefully at Noric House in Vernon, BC on January 8th, 2003 at 82 years old. He is survived by his loving wife, Helen, daughter, Kathie Swift of Vernon and son, David of Smithers, BC, son-in-law, Gary, daughter-in-law, Cindy, grandchildren, Morgan, Ethan and Dylan and a sister and her family in the Czech Republic. In respecting George's wishes, he was cremated and there will be no funeral service held. Marek, long-time resident of Beardmore, was well known in northwestern Ontario for his contributions to boreal forest management. He was a field forester for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources where, after arriving in Canada from Czechoslavakia in 1951 as a third generation forester, he started practising forestry with private industry. He received his Canadian citizenship papers in 1957 shortly after joining the provincial Department of Lands and Forests in Geraldton. He established some of the first plantations in northwestern Ontario at Tyrol and Limestone Lakes near Nipigon and Beardmore, which he continued to observe and learn from long after his early retirement from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Nipigon District in 1984. He served proudly for 27 years as a forester, often saying that he knew no higher calling than to be a civil servant, that is to serve the people. Marek's retirement came after a very public battle in the early 1980s with the Ministry about forest practices in northern Ontario which led to a public discussion about needed improvements in forest management. Marek's entire career was devoted to better management of northern forests, and he advocated the now commonly used term, ecosystem management as early as the 1960s. His work with scientists on black spruce ecosystem silviculture in the 1970s and 80s was a reflection of this approach and he was proud to share with Leo Vidlak, another Czech forester who practiced in northwestern Ontario, the title pioneer of small area clearcut management. Marek felt a special bond with Aboriginal people in the area, having worked with them as treeplanters to establish the Tyrol and Limestone plantations and, in his retirement, working with the local communities of Ginoogaming and Rocky Bay First Nations on forest management issues, both on reserve and off. He also acted as a consultant to the Innu of Labrador when they began exploring the possibilities of assuming responsibility for forest management in their land claim area. Marek was always generous about sharing his long years of field experience in Boreal ecology with foresters, environmentalists, ministers, scientists, students, academics, bureaucrats, journalists and anyone else who recognized his remarkable knowledge. He will be missed by the many people in northwestern Ontario whose lives and work he touched and influenced. As an expression of sympathy, donations in memory of George Marek may be sent to either the Ontario Professional Foresters Foundation (see OPFF at https://www.opfa.on.ca/index2.htm) which assists students in programs leading to their acceptance as Registered Professional Foresters in Ontario, 3-800 Yonge St., Innisfil ON L9S 1L5 or the George T. Marek Memorial Award which will be given to forestry students at Lakehead University who carry out research in keeping with Marek's life's work, c/o Development Office, Lakehead University, Thunder Bay ON P7B 5E1.
