With deep sadness the family of Eddie Shermack, age 80 years, announce his death on November 14, 2003 at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital. Eddie passed away peacefully and bravely with his family at his side. A life long resident of the city, Eddie enjoyed the quiet, peaceful life and spent much of his time appreciating his natural surroundings. Many will remember Eddie as he rode his bicycle around Westfort, down Rosslyn Road, to Chippewa Park and all over the city. A good provider, he worked for years at the N. M. Paterson & Sons elevator and he could be seen walking or cycling to work early in the morning and returning home to his family every afternoon. Later, he was employed by Richardson Terminals and had to travel across town to Current River. He continued to use his bicycle to get to work and eventually traded in his "freighter" with the big basket in the front, for a more high-tech version. This was the only extravagance in his life and he took great-pride in his ten-speed and his mountain bike. Weather permitting, this was by far his favorite method of transportation and he impatiently waited for the winters to end so he could get back on the road. Following his retirement Eddie accompanied his wife of over 50 years, Annie on several trips to the west to visit relatives and long time friends, Les and Ida Davis. He was a long time member of Moose Lodge 844 and Broadway United Church. Eddie is survived by his daughter Rebecca Wiberg of Calgary, and four sons: Edward (Nell Cavion), Russell (Melanie), Stephen, all of Thunder Bay, and Douglas, of Vegreville; grandchildren Paul (Kathie), Kyre, Aleksa, Kathryn, Adison, Adam and Jeffery; great-grandson William. He is also survived by two brothers, Bill Danchuk (Beverly) and Ron Danchuk, both of Thunder Bay. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Eddie was predeceased by his wife Annie, daughter Kathryn, father Aleksa, mother Annie Danchuk, brothers Peter Danchuk, Paul Danchuk and Nick Danchuk, sister Kay Winstl. Eddie will be sadly missed and fondly remembered as we all share "Eddie" stories in the years to come. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at the Westfort Chapel, 420 West Gore Street at James, with Rev. Jack White officiating. Interment will take place at a later date. If friends so wish donations can be made to Broadway United Church or to the charity of their choice.
