Janet Rolston Lorenzen-Ristow of Longmont died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at the Boulder/Longmont Hospice in Louisville. She was 73. She was born July 1, 1926, in Denver to George E. Rolston and Guyda Larson Rolston. She married Kyle L. Lorenzen in Dec. 1951. The couple had three children before divorcing in 1974. She was later married to Ray Ristow, with whom she shared homes in Florida and Colorado. Mrs. Lorenzen-Ristow taught for 25 years in public schools in Ames, Iowa; Lincoln, Neb.; Denver and Boulder before retiring as secretary in the library of the University of Colorado. She is survived by her second husband; a sister, Virginia Rolston Webb; two daughters, Tara Pogoda of Boulder and Jana Lorenzen of California; a son, Garth Lorenzen of California, and one granddaughter. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at Fairmount's Little Ivy Chapel, 430 S. Quebec St., in Denver. Interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery icon.

Virginia B. Rice

Virginia B. Rice of Boulder died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, in Boulder of cancer. She was 74. She was born March 9, 1925, in Omaha, Neb., to Marshall Buckingham and Myrtle Bowyer Buckingham. She married Dr. Lee Rice on July 2, 1955, in Omaha. She was the assistant dean of women at the University of Iowa. Mrs. Rice moved to Boulder from Denver 42 years ago. She graduated from the University of Nebraska and received a master's degree in speech therapy from the University of Iowa. She was the national vice president of the Women's Auxiliary to the American Medical Association, a member of the Governor's Commission for Children and Youth in Colorado, president of Los Amigos, past president of Colorado Gamma Phi Beta, a member of West Point Officer's Wives Club and a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and St. Aidan's Episcopal of Boulder. Survivors include her husband of Boulder; a daughter, Susan Knott of New York City; a brother, William Buckingham of Omaha; and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Chapel, 1419 Pine St., Boulder, with the Rev. Rol Hoverstock officiating. A reception will follow at St. John's parish hall. Jean Elizabeth Vargo of Lafayette died from cancer on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Hospice of Boulder County in Lafayette. She was 55. She was born Dec. 28, 1943, in Lorain, Ohio, to Flora Dobos Vargo and John Vargo. Miss Vargo worked in new home sales for McStain Enterprises. She also taught junior high and high school in the St. Vrain Valley School District. She graduated from the Oberlin School of Commerce and Bowling Green State University. She was a host for international students attending the University of Colorado, a friend to a mentally disabled person, a member of PBS Channel 6 and a member of NOW and the Sierra Club. She enjoyed skiing and traveling. Survivors include her mother of Lafayette and two sisters, Alice McBride of Fountain Valley, Calif., and FloraAnn Milann of Lafayette. She was preceded in death by her father in 1960. A memorial mass will be held at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 2312 14th St., Boulder with the Rev. Edward Madden officiating. Arnold Borg

Arnold Borg of Longmont died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Longmont United Hospital. He was 81. He was born Sept. 14, 1917, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to Karl Borg and Signe Haggblom Borg. He married Dorothy Lutz on Aug. 4, 1940, in New York City. Mr. Borg was a manager at IBM. He also served in the U.S. Army Air Force in the China-Burma-India Theater; following his active duty, he served in the Air Force Reserves, retiring in 1977 at the rank of lieutenant colonel. He moved to Boulder in 1965 from Poughkeepsie, and to Longmont in 1998 from Boulder. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed reading and traveling. Survivors include his wife of Longmont; a daughter, Barbara Borg of Longmont; a sister, Alice Crawford of Long Island, N.Y.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Borg and Charles Borg; and a sister, Edna Borg. Funeral services were held. Interment was in Fort Logan National cemeteryin Denver. Clifton C. Sutton of Boulder died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in Boulder. He was 80. He was born Feb. 12, 1919, in Wilmington, Del., to Edwin Sutton and Martha Camperson Sutton. He married Ida-Lois Dietrich in 1933, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She died in 1996. Mr. Sutton was an engineer in the health care industry. He had lived in Boulder for one year, coming from Bridgewater, N.J. Survivors include three sons, Philip Sutton of Nederland, Randy Sutton of Lakeport, Calif., and Doug Sutton of Palatine, Ill. No services were held. Crist Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Peggy Miller Elwell

Peggy Miller Elwell of Lafayette died of natural causes Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in Louisville. She was 49. She was born Oct. 28, 1949, in Escanaba, Mich., to Eugene H. Olson and Ethel Schram Olson. She married William Clausen in 1968. They divorced. She married Tom Elwell on April 20, 1997. Mrs. Elwell was a homemaker who enjoyed animals, antique furniture and traveling. Survivors include her husband of Lafayette; her mother of Gladstone, Mich.; a son, William Clausen of Lafayette; a daughter, Jenny Clausen of Boulder; a stepson, Blake Elwell of Lafayette; and two sisters, Judy Umbreit of Milwaukee, Wis., and Jean Dahlgren of Neenah, Wis. She was preceded in death by her father on July 21, 1998; and a brother, Ricky Olson, on July 5, 1999. No services will be held. A private cremation will be held. DELBERT OWEN BLACK

Delbert Owen Black of Boulder died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in Boulder. He was 76. A Boulder native, he was born July 7, 1923, to Jesse Randolph and Maude May Berg Black. He married Virginia Royce Sept. 18, 1946, in Portland, Ore. She died in 1956. Mr. Black graduated from Boulder High School in 1942 and joined the U.S. Marines, where he served from 1943 to'45. During World War II, he participated in the Bonin Islands Operation, anti-submarine patrol in the Marcus Islands area, the on Japan, capture and occupation of Saipan, capture and occupation of Iwo Jima and the capture and occupation of Okinawa. During the war, he was a master technical sergeant in aviation. In 1955, he moved to Seattle, and he started his own collection agency. He had the agency for 33 years then moved to Pueblo, in 1990 and to Boulder in 1999. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, flyfishing, biking and kayaking. Mr. Black is survived by his son, Kenneth Owen Black of Louisville; his daughter, Kathryn Black Husted of Boulder; a sister, Nellie Black of Denver, and two grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Green Mountain Cemetery icon. J. RICHARD CHRISTOPHER

J. Richard Christopher of Boulder died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, in Boulder. He was 79. He was born April 23, 1920, in Ouray to Harry Arnette Christopher and Jenny Fauber Christopher. He came to Boulder with his family when he was 2 years old. On March 16, 1942, he married Margaret Mullenix in Boulder. She died in November 1989. Mr. Christopher was an accountant with the University of Colorado, primarily with the housing and athletic departments, until his retirement in 1989. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, and was sent to China. He attained the rank of first lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps. Mr. Christopher was a golfer and photographer. He was an avid CU Buffs fan, and was involved with the Boulder Junior Chamber of Commerce and American Diabetes Association. He belonged to St. John's Episcopal Church. He is survived by his son, Stephen Christopher of Boulder; his daughter, Amy Gray of Lafayette; brother, C. Harry Christopher of Denver; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesdayat St. John's Episcopal Church, 1419 Pine St., Boulder. Derek P. Lyske

Derek P. Lyske of Santa Ana, Calif., died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in Longmont. He was 48. Mr. Lyske was born Sept. 8, 1951, in Swindon, England, to William E. and Louise McCullagh Lyske. He was in the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1980, earning a high school diploma while in the service. He served in the United States and overseas as a member of the Combat Control teams. During that time, Mr. Lyske was twice a member of the U.S. Air Force winning teams in parachuting accuracy and style championship. He became a senior parachute instructor after leaving the Air Force. He had lived in Boulder County since April 1999. Mr. Lyske is survived by his father, William, of Santa Ana, his sister Anne Molloy of Blackburn, England, and a brother, Richard Lyske of Blackburn. His mother, Louise, proceeded him in death. Private services were held. Funeral services were arranged by Avalon Cremation and Funeral Service of Longmont.

Morris J. Smith

Morris J. Smith of Katy, Texas, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at a Houston hospital. He was 86. Mr. Smith was born Sept. 10, 1913, in Grandby, Mo., to Charles Wesley and Gertrude Nunn Smith. He married Estel Mae Wood on Aug. 19, 1934. They lived in Boulder from 1957 to 1996. He was a machinist. He is survived by four children, Loren Smith of California, Warren Smith of Boulder, Sybil Cochran of Katy, and Galen Smith of Longmont; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his wife in 1996, and his daughter, Nila Mae Smith Lies in 1953. Visitation was held Saturday at Schmidt Funeral Home in Katy, and will be held again from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Resthaven Mortuary in Wichita, Kan. Interment will be private in Kansas. Albert J. Stevens of Lafayette died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in Denver. He was 74. He was born Sept. 20, 1924, in Canfield near Erie to Julian and Demetrie Oast Stevens. He never married and lived most of his life in the Boulder County area. Mr. Stevens was a farmer. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. The last few years, he lived at Villa Assisted Living Center in Greeley. He is survived by his niece, Peggy Stevens of Lyons, and nephews Verla Stevens, Denver, and Bob Stevens, Arvada. Richard G. Scherer of Longmont died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, in Reston, Va. He was 66. Scherer was born April 24, 1933, in St. Louis, Mo., to Phillip Scherer and Marie (Riesheis) Scherer. He married Joan Fleming on Sept. 1, 1956. Mr. Scherer had worked for 40 years in publishing and marketing. He graduated from the Universtiy of Notre Dame in 1955, magna cum laude. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Germany. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Joan; three sons, James F. Scherer of Boulder, Tim M. Scherer of Herndon, Va., and Christopher J. Scherer of Brunswick, N.J.; a brother, John A Scherer of Westfield, N.J.; two sisters, Phyllis T. Krechel of Naples. Fl., and Patricia Handlan of Kirkwood, Mo.; and eight grandchildren. William Edward Hulsizer of Broomfield died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Avista Hospital in Louisville. He was 75. He was born June 24, 1924, in Oswego, Kan., to George Hulsizer and Lily Whitney Hulsizer. He married Phyllis Zuker on Sept. 6, 1947, in Minneapolis, Kan. Mr. Hulsizer worked as a landman for various oil companies. He enjoyed poetry, hiking, skiing, bicycling and fly fishing. He graduated from Kansas State University and Tulsa Law School. Survivors include his wife of Broomfield; three daughters, Janna Boccard of Broomfield, Joy Barrett of Littleton, and Jayme Weynand of Steamboat Springs; a sister, Helen Dunbar of Tulsa, Okla.; a brother, Richard Hulsizer of Texas, and two grandsons. Jack R. Myers of Santa Cruz, Calif., formerly of Boulder, died Oct. 29, 1999, in Santa Cruz. He was 84. He was born Nov. 12, 1914, in Omaha, Neb., to John R. Myers and Elizabeth Wendt Myers. He married Phyllis H. Pierce on Dec. 4, 1935, in Omaha, Neb. She died on Dec. 14, 1982. Mr. Myers worked for the Daily Camera as a linotype operator from 1951 to 1981. He graduated from Tech High School in Omaha, Neb. He lived in Boulder from 1951 to 1981. He was a member of Masons Boulder Lodge No. 45 and was past master of it. Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Myers of Lafayette; two sons, Robert Myers of Milpitas, Calif., and Wood Myers of Denver; a sister, Dotty Brown of Covington, La.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Cremation has occurred. The Neptune Society of San Jose, Calif., was in charge of arrangements.

J.D. Raper of Stillwater, Okla., and a former Boulder County resident, died Nov. 4, 1999, in Stillwater. He was 85. He was born April 18, 1914, in Italy, Texas, to Charlie Russell Raper and Mary Elizabeth Sholars Raper. He married Nancy Grace Franklin on Nov. 21, 1936, in Cushing, Okla. Mr. Raper moved to Boulder County in 1959. He attended schools in Texas and Council Valley, Okla. He was a farmer, and he did bridge construction in Colorado, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Mr. Raper was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Steamboat Springs. He enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his wife of Stillwater; two daughters, Joy Jensen of Boulder and Marylyn Sears of Glencoe, Okla.; three brothers, Russell Raper of Muskogee, Okla., Clyde Raper of Stillwater and Dan Raper of Drumright, Okla.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mary E. Berry of Longmont died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at Applewood Care Center in Longmont. She was 87. She was born March 29, 1912, in Grand Junction to Richard Bond and Leona Uletta Lampshire Bond. She married Ira Lee "Tex" Berry in 1933 in Grand Junction. He died Aug. 10, 1980. She worked for Kresses department store in the early 1930s and for Smith Chemical Co. and McKesson Chemical Co. in 1976. She volunteered as a foster grandparent in Mesa County until 1980. Mrs. Berry moved to Longmont in 1999. She graduated from Grand Junction High School in Mesa County. She enjoyed playing the piano, crocheting and being a foster grandparent. Survivors include a sister, Bonnie Kohl of Allenspark; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Phyllis Lee Quinton; and three brothers, Ralph Bond, Richard Bond and Francis Bond. Services are pending. Interment icon will be in Grand Junction. Michael E. O'Shea of Boulder died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, in Boulder. He was 55. He was born April 4, 1944, in Denver to William J. O'Shea and Patricia Forte O'Shea. He married Kate Tilghman April 8, 1984, in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. He was an insurance broker for Flood and Peterson Insurance Agency since 1975. He opened an agency in Boulder in 1985. Mr. O'Shea lived in Boulder for 15 years. He graduated from the University of Denver. He was a member of the Boulder Country Club and was a board member and former president of the Developmental Disability Center. He enjoyed golfing, exercising, scuba diving and sailing. Survivors include his wife of Boulder; his parents of Denver; a son, Daniel O'Shea; three brothers, Timothy O'Shea, Kevin O'Shea and Patrick O'Shea, all of Denver; and a sister, Ann Owens of Denver. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Place. A rosary will be recited following the visitation at the mortuary. Patricia 'Pats' Johnson

Patricia "Pats" Johnson of Lafayette died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, in Longmont. She was 78. She was born March 19, 1921, in Staten Island, N.Y., to Joseph Maloy and Helen McWilliams Maloy. She married Walter T. Johnson in 1941 in Staten Island. He died in 1983. Mrs. Johnson was a teacher at St. Aloysius School in Calwell, N.J., for several years. She was a homemaker for most of her life. She did volunteer work for Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Senior Center in Lafayette. She moved to Lafayette from Bricktown, N.J., in 1995. Survivors include three sons, Zachary Johnson of Manassas, Va., Gregory Johnson of Missoula, Mont., and Stephen Johnson of Seven Lakes, N.C.; a sister, Elizabeth Stiles of Lafayette; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Maloy. A funeral Masswill be celebrated tonight at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 110 W. Simpson St., Lafayette. Robert D. Aggson of Berthoud, formerly of Boulder and Longmont, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at McKee Medical Center in Loveland. He was 63. He was born Aug. 6, 1936, in Brush to Roger Aggson and Amelia Eckhardt Aggson. He married Shirley Dorn on March 21, 1959, in Fort Morgan. Mr. Aggson was a retired engineer. He was the former owner of and president of Tagco of Boulder and a former partner of Lestronics of Boulder. He also had worked for Stored Energy Systems of Longmont and Technetics of Boulder. He attended the University of Colorado at Boulder. He lived in Boulder from 1959 to 1996, when he moved to Longmont. He was a golfer and former member of Flatirons Country Club in Boulder, and he made model airplanes. He was an Army veteran. Survivors include his wife of Berthoud; a son, Michael Aggson of Denver; a daughter, Susan Aggson of Denver; and a brother, John Aggson of Fort Morgan. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Aggson, and a sister, Sara Christensen. A celebration of his life will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain View United Methodist Church, 355 Ponca Place, Boulder. The Rev. Walter "Skip" Strickland will officiate. Ruth M. Slinkard of Wheat Ridge and formerly of Boulder died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at Wide Horizon care center in Wheat Ridge. She was 98. She was born Nov. 19, 1900, in De Kalb, Ill., to Wendell Bean and Ida Oaks Bean. She married Clifford Slinkard on Feb. 18, 1922 in De Kalb. He died in 1964. Mrs. Slinkard was a sales clerk. After retiring from J.C. Penney Co. in Eugene, Ore., she moved to Boulder in 1966 and lived at Golden West Senior Residence. She was a hostess at the Baseline McDonald's for 21 years, retiring in 1995. She moved to Wheat Ridge in 1997. She was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boulder. Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Terrell of Arvada; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be private. The family requests no flowers. Dianne E. Shaw of Boulder died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, of natural causes at home. She was 51. She was born July 3, 1948, in Portland, Ore., to Dayton C. Peck and Elsie Peterkort Peck. She married James W. Shaw on Sept. 20, 1969, in Junction City, Ore. Mrs. Shaw was marketing manager for the Leanin' Tree Greeting Card Co. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration from Oregon State University. She lived in Boulder off and on between 1970 and 1987 and moved here permanently in 1989. Mrs. Shaw was an active member and past president of the Boulder chapter of the Children's Hospital Guild. Betsy M. Davies of Boulder died Saturday, Sept. 25. She was 48. She was born Sept. 12, 1951, in Columbia, Mo., to George C. Miller and Elizabeth Nye Miller. She married Scott Davies on April 26, 1986, at Gold Lake. Mrs. Davies was a teacher at Crest View Elementary School. She graduated from the University of Kansas in 1973 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She moved to Boulder later that year. Survivors include her husband; two sisters, Cindy Miller Mustard of Columbia and Helen Miller Kallenbach of Occidental, Calif.; a son, Christopher Davies of Boulder; and a daughter, Sara Davies of Boulder. A memorial service will be at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, 1820 15th St., Boulder, with the Rev. Gary Johnson officiating. Services will conclude at the church. Memorial contributions can be made to the Crest View Elementary PTO, 1897 Sumac Ave., Boulder 80304 or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Thelma May Endres

Thelma May Endres of Longmont died Friday, Sept. 24, at Rose Terrace Care Center in Commerce City. She was 89. She was born Sept. 25, 1909, in Hagler, Neb., to Crandol J. Ovenden and Lucy Gowey Ovenden. She married Paul Endres on Sept. 30, 1934, in Denver. He died May 20, 1965. Mrs. Endres graduated from the University of Nebraska with a bachelor's degree in English. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Nebraska for two years before moving to Denver in 1934. She moved to Lyons in 1936. Survivors include a son, Jim Endres of Littleton; three daughters, Nancy Martinez of Trinidad, Sally Stambaugh of Dupont and Linda Endres of Lincoln; and eight grandchildren. Cremation has been held. A private interment will be held. Contributions can be made to the University of Nebraska foundation English scholarship in care of Lewellen Longmont Chapel, 503 Terry St., Longmont 80501.
