Freeman Bowdle Hover, Jr., February 9, 2009, in Tucson, Ariz. Freeman was a notable radio disk jockey in the 1950s before becoming a high school teacher. He was named Arizona Journalism Teacher of the Year and received lifetime achievement awards from CSPA and the National Scholastic Press Association. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Chelsia; a nephew, Noel; two nieces, Georgia and Rebecca; and many other family members and friends.

Linnea Erikson Heiny, March 4, 2009, in Greeley, Colo. Survived by her husband, Bob '64; her brother and sister-in-law, Lance and Suzie Erikson; her children, Tanya Heiny Hummels '90, Erik, and Greg; and eight grandchildren. She taught mathematics at Colorado State University, Valley High School, and the University of Northern Colorado for more than 20 years. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta.

Scott Brendan Slade, Oct. 11, 2008, San Diego, Calif. Scott was a Colorado native whose struggle to live a normal life after he became a quadriplegic was chronicled in the Rocky Mountain News. In January 2007, Scott contracted a simple bacterial infection that spread up his spinal column and left him paralyzed. His wife, Kathy, was pregnant, and the shock of her husband's illness sent her into premature labor, and she gave birth to twin girls, Samantha and Stephanie. After graduation from Colorado College, he earned his MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Arizona. After he became ill, he spent five months undergoing treatment at Craig Rehabilitation Hospital in Englewood, Colo. He was about to celebrate his first anniversary of returning home to his family in San Diego when he contracted a fatal infection. Scott is survived by his wife and daughters; his parents, Gilbert and Elaine Slade; and his sister, Erin.

Philip Edward Buchanan, March 2, 2009, in Portland, Ore. In 1985, his senior year in high school, Phil was diagnosed with a head tumor. For 24 years, Phil met the challenges of managing this cancer through surgeries, radiation therapies, and medications. He and his wife Wendy Thomas '91 traveled, skied, canoed, swam, camped, drove Phil's 1976 Land Cruiser, listened to music, and laughed together. In 2006, Phil became blind; he and Wendy sold their home and his business and move to Portland, Ore. Unfortunately, in 2008, Phil's health declined. He is survived by his wife, their daughter Zoey, and many loving family members and friends.

Adam Michael Petrelli, Jan. 23, 2009, in New York City. He is survived by his father, Anthony Petrelli and his wife, Shonya; his mother, Mary Gallo and her husband, Craig; his brothers Brian, Michael, and Caleb; and his sister Katie.

Steve Durand, April 11, 2009, in Colorado Springs. Steve had been the assistant volleyball coach at Colorado College since 2003. He coached club volleyball in Colorado Springs for the last 15 years with Match Point Volleyball and Colorado Springs Altitude. After spending 24 years in the U.S. Air Force as a firefighter, Steve retired as the deputy fire chief at Peterson Air Force Base in 1997. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and sons Brian and Kevin.
Ursula Gray, Jan. 13, 2009, in Colorado Springs. She was a beloved creative dance teacher to children and adults at Colorado College from 1954 to 1991. Her daughters, Lisa and Sherry, both of Santa Fe, N.M., were able to celebrate the New Year with her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Colorado College Professor Glenn Gray.
Whitney deMoraes Hendrickson, March 17, 2009, in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was in her freshman year at Grinnell College in Iowa. She is survived by her parents, David C. Hendrickson '75, a political science professor at Colorado College, and Clelia Deane deMoraes '75; her twin brother Wesley; her sister, Marina; her grandparents, Carlos and Elizabeth deMoraes; Frances Hendrickson; and G.D. Spradlin.
Eldon T. Hitchcock, March 3, 2009. He taught chemistry for 35 years at Colorado College, was a founding member of the Christian American Scientific Affiliation and was a lifetime member of the American Chemical Society. He is survived by his children, Renee, Janine '86, and Daniel '89; preceded in death by his wife, Monique, and brothers Burton and Ben.
Lynn S. Pettit, Jan. 5, 2009, in Colorado Springs. She is survived by a son, Tom, and daughter, Tina Pettit '85. She was the wife of the late Arthur G. Pettit, a professor of history at Colorado College.
