James Ruch, June 17, 2010, in Santa Barbara, Calif. Jim had a varied career that included stints as a U.S. Navy intelligence officer; special assistant to the assistant secretary of the interior for fish, wildlife, and parks, in Washington, D.C., where he was involved in writing the Endangered Species Act; and various positions with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. He also served as executive vice president of the Grand Canyon Trust and was a certified expert witness in trials in Idaho, Hawaii, and California. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Barrett Ruch ’59; his three daughters, Julia Ruch Day; Laura Ruch DeLonzor; and Sara Ruch Schraeder; his four grandchildren, Megan Day Diblasi, Ashley Day; and Bria and Griffin Schraeder; and his brother, Peter Ruch ’60.

Gary Edwin Cook, March 21, 2010. After earning his bachelor’s in geology at Colorado College, Gary returned to get his master’s in education from the college in 1967. At Colorado College, he played football, basketball, and ran track and field. Survivors include his wife, Sandi, and children Cara Henry, Jeanna Peterson, and Leah Cook.

Leo Robert Smentowski, Feb. 5, 2010, in Colorado Springs. Leo was a certified public accountant since his graduation from Colorado College. He was a board member on multiple professional and civic organizations and was proud of his service at St. Mary’s High School. He served as a consultant to many parochial schools across the nation. A favorite memory: He shared a peanut butter sandwich with then-President Jimmy Carter in the White House kitchen, as they discussed the workings of inner-city schools. Among survivors are his wife, Marcella, and five children, including Leo Robert “Bob” Smentowski, Jr. ’84.

Muriel Elizabeth “Betty” Kopesky, April 16, 2010, in Oakdale, Minn. She was known as a bright, leading light, and a traveling addict. She is survived by her husband, Steven Harry Kopesky ’66; children Steven, Sara, Jennifer Broten, and Kevin; and four grandchildren.
Suzanne Rall Peacock, Oct. 3, 2009, in Fort Worth, Texas. In recent years, Suzy served as executive director of the Rainwater Foundation, working to help children in urban communities have a chance at a better life. She also co-founded REAL School Gardens, a grassroots gardening program supporting elementary school communities as they design, install, and sustain outdoor classrooms (gardens). Survivors include her children, Jason Boaz Simus and Jessica Simus Barr; three siblings; her mother; two grandchildren; and niece, Alison Bechtel Wexler ’96.

Robert William Shreck, May 1, 2010, in Henderson, Nev. He received his doctorate of medicine from the University of Nebraska Medical School in 1974 and practiced medicine at A Family Health Care Center for 30 years before pursing a career as a medical director. He received numerous awards within the medical community, including the 1999 Nevada Physician of the Year and the 2004 Distinguished Physician of the Year by the Clark County Medical Society. Robert is survived by his wife, Jay; brother Jim; children Sarah, Jessica, Stephanie, Todd, and Tyson; and several grandchildren.

Joseph “Bo” Koster, Feb. 23, 2010, in St. Louis, Mo. After graduating cum laude from Colorado College, Bo received his Ph.D. from the department of cell biology and physiology at Washington University in 1996. Bo was a research scientist for more than 20 years at the Washington University School of Medicine, working to find a cure for human diabetes. Among survivors are his brother R. Stribling Koster of Chicago, Ill., and Ann Lavin Koster of St. Louis, Mo.
