Edmund D. Mulford, Jr., April 22, 2010. He earned a bachelor’s degree in zoology and a master of arts in teaching in 1960, both from Colorado College.
James B. Ruch, June 17, 2010, in Santa Barbara, Calif. Jim had a varied career that included stints as a U.S. Navy intelligence officer; special assistant to the assistant secretary of the interior for fish, wildlife, and parks, in Washington, D.C., where he was involved in writing the Endangered Species Act; and various positions with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. He also served as executive vice president of the Grand Canyon Trust and was a certified expert witness in trials in Idaho, Hawaii, and California. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Barrett Ruch ’59; his three daughters, Julia Ruch Day; Laura Ruch DeLonzor; and Sara Ruch Schraeder; his four grandchildren, Megan Day Diblasi, Ashley Day; and Bria and Griffin Schraeder; and his brother, Peter Ruch ’60.

Meredith “Bunny” McCombs Dalebout, March 24, 2009, in Colorado Springs. Meredith worked as a teacher and the school library/media specialist for School District 11. Survivors include her daughters, Debra and Laura.

Fred A. Peel, March 12, 2009, in Arvada, Colo. He will be most remembered for his love of flying, the outdoors, and business involvement in mining, petroleum, and environmental reclamation. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, and daughters, Tricia and Marnie.

Charles Stewart Ritchie III, May 27, 2010, in Menlo Park, Calif. Stew graduated cum laude from Colorado College and was a member of Phi Delta Theta and the Honor Council. He received his M.D. from Stanford University and was the founder and chief executive of Guckenheimer Enterprises Inc., an upscale contract food service company in corporate dining. He also was a trustee of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation for many years. His wife, Jeanie, survives, as does one son, C. Stewart Ritchie IV.

Joan Sage Batchelder, May 31, 2010, at her Wellesley, Mass., home. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Colorado College and received her master’s degree in urban economics from Syracuse University. A devoted alumna, Joan was a member of Gamma Phi Beta and the 1874 Society. In 1967, Joan began a career in the investment industry in Boston that spanned more than 35 years. She was among a pioneering group of women who entered what had been a largely male-dominated industry and became known as a female leader in the financial field. Survivors include an aunt, Barbara Sage and two sisters, Wendy Barton and Ann.
Carol Ann Rymer Davis of Denver, and her flying partner, Richard Abruzzo, of Albuquerque, N.M., were presumed dead when lost at sea on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, in an area of severe thunderstorms over the Adriatic Sea. Both were world champion gas and hot-air balloonists and were competing in the Gordon Bennett Race, which had launched from Bristol, England, on Sat., Sept. 25, 2010. Carol is survived by her husband, John; two daughters, Heather Mead Davis Benavidez, and Marne Anne Davis Schmitz; and five grandchildren. One of Denver’s leading radiologists, she received her medical degree from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and completed her residency in nuclear radiology at the Lovelace Medicine Center in Albuquerque, where she also began her career.

Cynthia “Cindy” Vreeland, July 31, 2010, in Palo Alto, Calif. She worked for Sunset magazine for 37 years, first in the book department and then in magazine production. For the last five years she also was a docent at the Filoli Estate and gardens. She particularly enjoyed the gardens and helping with the annual Christmas programs. She is survived by her father, sister, and brother.

Huston Diehl, Sept. 8, 2010, at home in Iowa City, Iowa. Following her graduation from Colorado College, Huston earned a Ph.D. in English from Duke University in 1975. She was a professor of English and collegiate fellow in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Iowa. Prior to moving to Iowa in 1984, she was an English professor at SUNY-Geneseo and the University of Oklahoma. She is survived by her husband Gerald Wetlaufer, her daughter Susannah Lewis, her stepdaughter Jamian Wetlaufer, two stepchildren from a previous marriage, Jennifer Lewis Smith ’82 and Daniel Lewis, and two sisters.

Michael D. Mallinger, Aug. 28, 2010, in Colorado Springs. Mike played men’s hockey and baseball at Colorado College. He is survived by his daughter, Amanda T. Jozsa ’03, and her husband, Jason Jozsa ’03.

Vernon Cleophus King Jr., Aug. 2, 2010, in Denver. Vernon attended Pueblo County High School and majored in political science at Colorado College. In 2008, he married his college sweetheart, Renee A. Cousins-King ’74, who survives, along with his six children.

John D. “Johnny” Robinson, May 26, 2009, in Lincoln, Mass. He served for many years as chairman of the finance committee for the town of Lincoln. When he died, his employer, Longwood Investments, bought a Colorado College chair with a plaque with Johnny’s name and had it dedicated to Johnny at the Lincoln town offices. His wife, Molly Bedell Robinson ’75, survives, as do two daughters, Annie and Nell.

Judith Anne “Judy” Macks, June 8, 2010, in San Francisco. As a social worker, Judy became an early pioneer in the HIV/AIDS epidemic and worked in the Caribbean and Africa doing HIV-prevention training. Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, she became an organizational consultant, a life coach, and a mortgage broker. Survivors include her daughter Sophie.

Tedd Hamaker, Aug. 30, 2010, in Missouri. Tedd completed veterinary school at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. He acquired Missouri’s oldest veterinary clinic, Springfield Veterinary Hospital, and became known as “Dr. Tedd, Supervet” on television and radio shows. He loved baseball and hockey. Many of his Colorado College friends came to his bedside in the last weeks of his life to reminisce or attended his service. They include: Peter Natiello ’82, Peter Tasker ’82, Schuyler Grey ’82, Andy Cowan ’82, Chris ’83 and Liza Malott Pohle ’85, Mike Hayes ’83, Mike Millisor ’83, Mark Polite ’83, Tim Sexton ’83, Craig Bevan ’83, Tony and Jennifer Puckett ’83, Tim Wilkinson ’84, and George Brown ’84. Among his survivors are his wife, Crista Hogan, and children Joe, Lena, and Daniel.

Diana Falb Humphreys, June 23, 2010, in Beulah, Colo. After obtaining her master’s degree from the State University of New York in Syracuse, she served as a biologist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1990 to her death. Survivors include her husband Hank, daughter Taylor, parents Jeanette and John Falb, and brother Scott.

Marianne Elser Crowder, June 4, 2010, in Palo Alto, Calif. Marianne, 104, was born in Colorado Springs and studied with many of the leading pioneers of modern dance. She performed with the Hanya Holm Dance Co. and the Perry Mansfield Co. on the RKO Vaudeville circuit. She was chair of the dance department at Colorado College. Marianne married writer Paul Crowder and moved to California, where she taught in the Stanford University drama department. She retired from active teaching at 95. In 2007, she was celebrated as the oldest Girl Scout in America. Marianne is survived by two daughters, Anne and Susan. She also leaves 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
