Sister Maura Thompson
Sister Maura Thompson, 91, a Sister of Charity of Leavenworth, died on Jan. 12, at Ross Hall, Mother House, Leavenworth, Kan.
Marie E. Thompson was born on April 12, 1909 in Leavenworth, Kan, one of four children of Michael J. and Eva J. Brady Thompson. She graduated from Immaculate Conception and Immaculata High School, Leavenworth, Kan.
She entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on August 14, 1932 and, as Sister Maura, made her profession of vows on June 17, 1934
After profession, Sister taught at St. Peter's Cathedral School and St. Mary School, Kansas City, Kan. She then served as an office worker and switchboard operator in hospitals in Kansas, in Montana, and at St. Vincent Hospital, in Leadville. Her ministries also included St. Vincent Home, Topeka, Kan. and Mount St. Vincent Home, Denver, Colo. She served eight years as switchboard operator for Saint Mary College, Leavenworth, Kan. and later she served as clerk and typist to the Community Officers and coordinated the copier services; she retired to Ross Hall in 1993. Everyone saw Sister Maura as a loving and sweet person.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
A vigil was held on Jan. 16 in Ross Chapel of the Sisters of Charity Mother House in Leavenworth. Mass of Christian Burial was in Ross Chapel on Jan. 17.
Interment was in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother House grounds.
Belden-Sexton-Sumpter Chapels are in charge of arrangements.

Helen M. Wilson
Former Leadville resident Helen M. Wilson, 84, died Dec. 14 in St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich.
She was born in Denver and made her home for nearly twenty years in Leadville and Climax. She also lived in Englewood, Fla.
Her husband William H. Wilson preceded her in death in 1986.
She is survived by sons William (Theresa) Wilson, Lansdale, Pa.; and John (Regina) Wilson, Pinckney, Mich.; daughter Arlene Neuburger, Evanston, Ill.; sister Jennie Marr, Denver; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service was held in Ann Arbor.
Interment will be at Mt. Olivette Cemetery in Denver.

Maclovio Cristobal 'Max' Medina, Jr.
Maclovio Cristobal "Max" Medina, Jr. died Jan. 27 at St. Vincent Hospital in Leadville.
He was born in Gilman, Colo. July 4, 1938 to Gertrude (Espinosa) Medina and Maclovio Medina.
He married Helen F. Martinez on Jan. 29, 1957 and together they raised five children. They would have been married for 44 years.
He worked as a miner in all the areas' mines (Gilman, Climax, Day Mines, Black Cloud and also the Questa Mine near Taos, the Diamond Mine and Silverton). After 32 years of service, he retired to enjoy his family and become a 'couch potato,' where he supervised the remote control.
He liked watching most sports, except for hockey. When he watched professional wrestling, he would complain it was all "put on." And he loved to fish, both in the summer and ice fishing. He also was especially fond of western movies.
He enjoyed being with his family and was very proud of all of them. They will always remember his aversion to onions and garlic, saying "if they ate that, they must be starving!" People who knew him will remember his talent for nicknaming people and his love of the mountains. Just before his death, he couldn't wait to get back to the mountains and then he was at ease.
He was preceded in death by his father; grandson Gabriel Medina; and one sister, Lila Lopez.
He is survived by his wife Helen Medina, Leadville; mother Gertrude Medina, Redcliff; sons Anthony (Mable) Medina, Vail; and Paul (Pam) Medina, Leadville; daughters Maxine (Bobby) Montoya; Louine Medina; and Mae Shine, all of Leadville; sisters Jane (Joe B. O.) Martinez; Frances (Jimmy) Fernandez; and Vicki Medina, all of Redcliff; and brother Jimmy (Ruby) Medina, Redcliff.
He is also survived by his brother-in-law Virgil Lopez, Tooele, Utah; grandchildren Jason Medina, Toby Gonzales, Crystal Shine, Louise Montoya, Lori Medina, Ryan Medina, Adam Gonzales and Lynette Montoya; and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at the First Presbyterian Church in Leadville. The Reverend Tom Abbott and Father Tom Killeen officiated. Cecil E. Tapey sang some of Max's favorite hymns accompanied by Lynette Booth.
Pallbearers were Jason Medina, Toby Gonzales, Joe Manly, Arnold Vigil, Armando Romero and Roy Lujan. Honorary pallbearers were Joseph Martinez, Herman Fernandez and Albert Gallegos.
Following the Committal, the family received friends at a reception at La Cantina Restaurant.
Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Margaret Emma Russell
Margaret Emma Russell, 84, died Wednesday, Jan. 24 in Leadville.
She was born in Leadville on May 24, 1916 to Nels and Anna (Oquist) Nordstrom. After graduating from Leadville High School, she went on to two years of business college in Colorado Springs.
On Sept. 30, 1935, she married Ralph Russell in Leadville and together they raised four children.
She worked at various jobs and eventually retired as a secretary for the Lake County School District.
She enjoyed crocheting, fishing, 4-wheeling and was an avid Bronco fan. She dearly loved animals and treated her dogs and cats like family. She was active with the Senior Center and was very proud of her membership to the Cloud City Rebekah Lodge #38, serving in various offices including Noble Grand.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph; son Ralph F. Russell; sisters Helen Nordstrom and Bertha Harris; and brother Roy Nordstrom.
She is survived by her son Jay Dee (Mary Ann) Russell, Phoenix; daughters Penny Randall, Leadville; and Nancy (Jim) Raper, Oklahoma City, Okla.; grandchildren Donald P. "Randy" Randall, Silverthorne; Gregory G. (Hege) Randall, Colburn, Colo.; Deborah D. Foley, Parker, Colo.; Linda (Robert) Johnston, Florence, Mont.; David D. (Renee) Phillips, Great Falls, Mont.; Brenda I. Russell, Spokane, Wash.; Scott A. (Lori) McArthur, Lake Villa, Ill.; Shari A. (Marty) Marcely, Lakewood; Dean A. McArthur, Westminster; Terri A. McArthur, Gurney, Ill.; Lori A. (Patrick) Enright, Denver; Julie A. Russell, Cozumel, Mexico, and Jamie A. (Wayland) Engle, Dallas, Texas.
She is also survived by 29 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.
Services were held Jan. 27 at Bailey Funeral Home. The Reverend Tom Abbott officiated and Neil V. Reynolds played the organ.
Pallbearers were Paul Copper, Dick Dougherty, Rod Gifford, Ed O'Leary, Scott Bond and Roland McDaniel.
Interment was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Committal services were conducted by the Rebekah Lodge.

Alfred Daniel Rivera
Alfred Daniel Rivera, 45, died Wednesday, Jan. 31 at St. Vincent General Hospital after along illness.
He was born in Prescott, Ariz. on Sept. 22, 1955 to Reymundo and Lebyna Vigil Rivera.
He grew up in Redcliff, Colo. where the family moved in 1970. Then, in 1990, he moved to Leadville where he stayed.
He was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church. His hobbies included working on cars, etching mirrors and listening to music. His son Toby remembers how he and his father loved watching western movies together.
On Feb. 5, 1999, Alfred married Inez L. Romero in Leadville.
He was preceded in death by his mother Lebyna, who died in 2000.
He is survived by his wife, Inez Rivera, Leadville; son Toby Rivera, Leadville; daughter Alicia Rivera, Leadville; father Reymundo Rivera, Prescott, Ariz.; brothers and sisters Bobby (Jo-Anne) Rivera, Gypsum; Olivia Rivera, Denver; Bart (Marlene) Rivera, Leadville; Elizabeth Rivera, Redcliff; and Matthew Rivera, Redcliff.
He is also survived by his grandchildren Victor and Britney Martinez and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Rosary was recited Feb 2 and Mass of Christian Burial Feb. 3, both at Annunciation Catholic Church. Father Tom Killeen officiated and music was provided by Steve Gonzales and Jean Elliott.
Pallbearers were Joe B. Romero, Julian, Ray, Eugene, Harold and Devin Rivera. Honorary pallbearers were Bobby, Bart, Matthew and Toby Rivera.
Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery and a reception followed at La Cantina.
