Elmer Eugene “Gene” Hawkins
Former Leadville resident Gene Hawkins, 86, died Feb. 8, 2003,
at St. Anthony Hospital in Denver.
He was born in Buena Vista on April 30, 1916.
He moved to Leadville in 1939 and worked at the Fox Theatre for
23 years as a projectionist and assistant manager.
In 1962, he moved to Denver and worked 30 more years as a
projectionist. He retired in 1992 after 53 years in the motion
picture industry.
He lived in Golden with his dog Dusty.
His hobbies were electronics, clock making, and computers.
Interment was in the family plot in Buena Vista.
Raymond Howard Crippen
Raymond Howard Crippen, 77, died Feb 16, 2003.
He was born Aug. 12, 1925, in Colorado Springs, to Howard E.
Crippen and Pauline V. (Hinton) Crippen.
He served in World War II in the Navy.
He started his mining career in Leadville and retired from Magma
Copper Company in San Manuel, Ariz.
He was a silversmith and traded in turquoise jewelry.
He retired in Canon City where he has been a resident since 1985.
He was preceded in death by his brother Elmer Crippen; and his
parents.
He is survived by his children Gary (Ann) Crippen, Tucson, Ariz.;
and DicQiu (Ken) Looney, Sugarland, Texas; grandchildren
Shawnda Crippen, Flagstaff, Ariz.; Stephanie Athey, Tucson,
Ariz.; Steve Holcomb, Sugarland, Texas; and Coleen Brooks,
Katy, Texas; great grandchild Daniel Watson, Tucson, Ariz.; and
sister Helma Green, Roswell, N.M.
Bertha Jean Hren
Bertha Jean Hren, 71, died Feb. 23 at Aurora South Medical
Center in Aurora.
She was born in Grand County on July 11, 1931 to James and
Garnet (Tracey) Roberts.
As an infant, she moved with her family to Leadville where her
father worked in the area mines. After graduating from Leadville
High School, she became an operator for the local phone
company.
She married Tony Hren.
She loved spending time with her son in Aurora and the rest of her
extended family in Leadville.
She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and, as an accomplished
seamstress, spent many hours doing handwork of all kinds.
She was diagnosed with cancer in 1994 and has bravely fought it
for the past eight years.
She was preceded in death by her husband Tony, who died in
1986; and several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her son Louis Hren, Aurora; and numerous
other family members.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the First
United Presbyterian Church in Leadville. The Reverend Frances
McWilliams officiated and Joan Dawson sang accompanied by
Lynette Booth.
Interment was next to her husband at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Joe Hren, Frank Bradach, Bill Skala, Bob
Roeder, Randy Cavalli and John Skala.
The family received friends at a reception following interment at
the Elk’s Lodge.
Arrangements were handled by Bailey Funeral Home.

Theresa A. Cornella
Theresa A. Cornella, 89, died March 4 at St. Vincent Hospital in
Leadville.
She was born in Leadville on June 29, l913, to Max R. and Lena
(Morganari) Cornella. She went to school in Leadville and
graduated from Leadville High School.
She and her brothers, Max and Don, became partners in Cornella's
West Side Grocery on West 6th St. It was a sad day for
Leadvillites when the Cornella family retired from the grocery
business.
She enjoyed bookkeeping and, after the grocery store closed,
worked as a county clerk in the Lake County courthouse for a
number of years.
She loved her family and made caring for them her hobby.
She was a life-long member of Annunciation Catholic Church. A
very active member, she served as a eucharistic minister and
belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters.
She was devoted to her Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Mary Grant,
Angie Newtson and Ann Cornella; and brothers Don and Max
Cornella.
She is survived by her sister-in-law Thelma Cornella, Buena
Vista; and cousins Rose Barnett, Pueblo; and Theresa Spahn,
Denver. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The Vigil Service and Rosary were held March 7 and Mass of
Christian Burial was March 8, both at Annunciation Catholic
Church. Deacon Chuck Moss recited the Rosary and Father Jay
Jung officiated at the Vigil Service and Mass. Joan Dawson and
Terri Cornella sang, accompanied by Jean Elliott.
Interment was in the family plot in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jim Stoner, John Cornella, Sr., John Cornella,
Jr., and Craig, Shawn and Shane Cornella.
Following interment, the family received friends at a reception at
the Parish Hall.
Arrangements were handled by Bailey Funeral Home.

Sister Marie Ann Bertels
Sister Marie Ann Bertels, 71, a Sister of Charity of Leavenworth,
formerly a surgical supervising nurse, died March 28 at St.
Francis Health Center, Topeka, Kan.
Jean Marie Bertels was born on March 8, 1932, in Nortonville,
Kan., one of three children of George and Marie Forge Bertels.
She graduated from St. Joseph Grade School and Nortonville
High School, Nortonville.
She entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of
Leavenworth on Aug. 20, 1953, and, as sister Marie Ann, made
her profession of vows on Aug. 22, 1955. She was to have
celebrated her 50th year as a Jubilarian the summer of 2003.
Prior to entering the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, Sister had
received her certification as a nurse from St. Joseph Hospital,
Kansas City, Mo. After profession, Sister served as medical
surgical unit supervisor in Colorado at St. Joseph Hospital,
Denver; St. Vincent Hospital, Leadville; and St. Mary’s Hospital
& Medical Center, Grand Junction; she also served as clinical
instructor in other states.
In 1987, she cared for her mother in Nortonville during the time
of her mother’s illness. In 1988, she served in Ross Hall
Infirmary; in 1990 she became a member of the Pastoral Care
Department at Providence-St. Margaret Health Center. She was a
member of the Mother House Nursing Team and served as a
Wellness Nurse at the Mother House until the time of her illness.
She is survived by her sister Dolores Bolin, Goddard, Kan.;
brother Rev. George H. Bertels, Topeka, Kan.; nieces, nephews,
cousins in the SCL community include Sisters Darlyne Kern, and
Helen Forge; in the Benedictine Community, Sister Rosemary
Bertels.
A vigil was held on April 1 in Ross Chapel of the Sisters of
Charity Mother House in Leavenworth. Mass of the Resurrection
was celebrated in Ross Chapel on April 2 with her brother, Rev.
George Bertels, as the principal celebrant.
Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother
House grounds.
Davis Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorial
