Bernel L. Martin
Bernel L. Martin, 83, died Sept. 3 in Canon City.
He was born May 24, 1916, in Hazelton, Kansas to Earl and Mayme (Garlow) Martin.
He was raised on a farm in Kansas, entered the U.S. Army during WW II and served in the European theatre.
Upon his discharge, he began work at the Climax Mine, retiring in the early 1980's. At that time, he and his wife, Teresa Byrne, whom he married in 1976, moved to Canon City.
He was a member of the Tuesday afternoon bowling league, loved gardening, fishing and macrame.
He belonged to the Sunrise Lions Club, Golden Age Center and the VFW.
He was preceded in death by one sister and his first wife Mary.
He is survived by his wife Teresa Byrne, Canon City; daughters Carolyn (Raymond) Byrne and Linda Martin, both of Leadville; Carlotta (Geoff) Miller, Penrose; and Vivian (Scott) Woodhouse, Canon City; his son, Robert Seabolt, Kansas City, Kan.; his brothers George (Benita) Martin, N.M.; and Glenon (Mary) Martin, Kan.
He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including Cora Lou (John) Byrne, Leadville.
A Service of Remembrance was Sept. 8. with Glendon Martin officiating. He was cremated at Wilson-Andrews Crematory in Canon City.

Emily A. Slifka
Leadville resident Emily A. Slifka, 83, died Sept. 12 at St. Anthony Hospital Central.
Visitation was Sept. 15 and Mass of Christian Burial will be Sept. 16 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Leadville.
Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Catholic Community of Leadville for the Meals Program, 609 Poplar, Leadville, CO 80461.

Peter F. Berger
Peter "Pete" F. Berger, 67, died Sunday, Sept. 26 at his home in Canon City.
A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, Oct. 1 at 10 a.m. at Annunciation Catholic Church in Leadville.
His ashes will be interred in St. Joseph Cemetery following the Mass and his family will receive friends at a reception at the Parish Hall.

Joseph G. Francis, III
Joseph G. Francis, III, 74, died Sept. 23 in Lakewood.
He was born on Sept. 13, 1925 in Leadville to the late Joseph and Frances (Gornick) Francis.
After graduating from high school at The Abbey in Canon City, he went to work on the Lake County Road and Bridge Crew from January of 1949 to November of 1986. At that time, he took a medical retirement.
Although an only child, he grew up with many cousins including Beverly Francis, whom his mother raised, and she became like a sister. Beverly preceded Joe in death.
His many friends spoke of his pleasant, considerate personality and his straight-forward attitude in dealing with everyone.
He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Church and also belonged to the Elk's Lodge #236.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his cousin Beverly Francis Bogunovich.
He is survived by his first cousins: Joan (Ray) Dawson, Pauline (Sue) Fikany and Joan Kochevar, all of Leadville; Marie (Martin) Gornick; Joe Matekel, Daly City, Calif.; John (Joan) Bartulovich, Glenwood Springs; John Lansford, Las Vegas, Nev.; Greg Lansford, Boulder City, Nev.; Larry Lansford, El Cerritos, Calif.; and Judy Duppman and Richard Duppman, both of Oakland, Calif.
He is also survived by the daughters of Beverly (Francis) Bogunovich, Judy, Debbie, Gloria, Michelle and Beverly, who were all very special to him.
The Rosary was recited on Sept 26 and Mass of Christian Burial was Sept. 27, both at St. Joseph Church. Mass was concelebrated by Father Tom Killeen and Father Tom Kane. Joan Dawson sang accompanied by Joyce Gornick.
Pallbearers were Keith and Kevin Dawson, Victor Quintana, Dick Cody, Bill Skala and Mark Reid.
Interment was in the family plot in Elk's Rest Cemetery and the B.P.O.E. Lodge #236 conducted the committal service. Following the interment, a reception was held at the Parish Hall.

Irene Leffel Geib
Irene Leffel Geib, 97, died Dec. 9 at Miller's Merry Manor in New Carlisle, Ind.
Born June 4, 1902 in Logansport, Ind. to Charles and Chloe Surface Leffel, she lived her life on a farm in Akron, Ind.; in Leadville and in South Bend, Ind.
She graduated from a Chicago business college and then worked as a secretary for South Bend Christian Day School, Studebakers, Bendix, AM General in South Bend and Pike Lumber Company in Akron, Ind.
She was a member of Mayflower Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and a summer camp teacher. She was also a 4-H leader, a poet and an artist.
As Irene Leffel she married Robert Burns, who preceded her in death. Then on Dec. 16, 1943 she married W. Bryan Murrill in Leadville. He died on Jan. 1, 1969. She then married Ezra Henry Geib on June 4, 1970. He died on Feb. 5, 1982.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister Geneva French and a brother, Chester Leffel, both of South Bend; and two step sons, Bill Murrill, Kellogg, Idaho and Ed Murrill, South Bend.
She is survived by her daughter Peggy Callander (Newt) Collins, South Bend, Ind.; grandson Skip (Mary) Callander, South Bend, Ind.; great granddaughter Missy Callander, South Bend, Ind.; and two step granddaughters Peggy Leonhard and Nancy Collins, both of South Bend.
Services and burial were Dec. 13 in South Bend.
