Alice Gay
Alice Gay, 72, of Croton, Iowa, passed away at 10:32 p.m. Monday, July 4, at the Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua, Iowa. Born March 16, 1933, in Montrose, Colo., she was the daughter of Raymond Earl and Isabell Lick Wise. On April 17, 1949, in Leadville, she married Raymond Gay.Survivors include: three sons, Brock Gay of Leadville, Ricky Gay of Wever, Iowa, and Kirk (Donna) Gray of Nathrop; two daughters, Rhonda (Charlie) Claman of Farmington and Regina (Rodney) Barrett of Croton, Iowa; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband. Gay was a member of the Women of the Moose, a pilot and was a volunteer plane spotter during World War II. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, crossword puzzles and flying.
Elsie Helen (Maki) Barnard
Elsie Helen (Maki) Barnard was born in Leadville on Sept. 9, 1917. She attended Leadville schools and graduated from Leadville High School in 1935.She was married to Donald O. Barnard in 1938. She was a homemaker who enjoyed crocheting, embroidery and being with her family. After leaving Leadville, she lived at the Odd Fellows Home in Canon City, and later moved to Bethany Healthplex in Lakewood, where she passed peacefully on July 21.She was preceded in death by her husband, brother Reino and sister Sigrid.Barnard is survived by daughters Sharon Clugston of Combine, Texas, and Helen White of Lakewood; son-in-law Jerry Clugston; grandchildren Gwen Williams, Steven Clugston, Cathy LeGrande, Heidi Fletcher and Heather White; eight great-grandchildren; and her brother, Eugene Maki.
Roger Edward Prosser
Roger Edward Prosser, 81, long-time resident of Salida, died on Saturday, July 23, at his home in Salida. Prosser was born Dec. 29, 1923, in Aniwa, Wis., to Bernard E. and Elizabeth (Keveter) Millhorn. Prosser was united in marriage to Rosella Kufeldt (Tootsie) on June 18, 1952. He also served his country in WWII in the Army. Prosser retired from Climax Mine in 1982 where he had been employed as a welder. He loved the outdoors and spent many weekends camping, hiking and fishing. He studied the geology of the area and was an avid rock hound. Prosser loved his yard and spending time working on it. In later years, he made walking sticks and canes.Prosser was preceded in death by his parents and children Sue, Debbie, and Janine. He is survived by his wife Rosella Prosser of Salida; children Roger, Gerrylynn, Cathy (Wise),
John, Cindy, Cheryl, Rosella, Barbara and Beth; and honorary sister Joyce. He was blessed with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.A gathering for friends is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, July 30, at the family home at 938 W. 2nd St. in Salida. Frieda Schutte
Frieda Schutte, 89, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2005, at her home in Brush. She was born July 30, 1915, in Centerville, Iowa, to Louis and Teresa Rizzolo. Frieda graduated from Sterling, Colo., High School. She married Raymond Schutte on January 3,1939 in Sterling. The Schuttes continued to live in Sterling until 1949 when they moved to Climax, where she was a cook and custodian for the Leadville School District. In 1979 they moved to Cottonwood, Ariz. In 1990 they moved to Brush.Schutte enjoyed volunteering her time to help others. She was a member of the East Morgan County Hospital Auxiliary, American Red Cross Gray Ladies. She belonged to the DOE'S of Leadville and had been a Cub Scout leader for many years. She enjoyed her flower garden and being with her family.Survivors include three sons, Raymond Jr. of Seattle, David of Leadville and Howard of Thornton; three daughters, Sandra Schutte of Wiggins, Colo., Paula Bement of Loveland, Colo., and Roma Brandau of Lindon, Colo.; two sisters, Roma Girardi of Sterling, Colo., and Ann Pustka of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband; one grandson; one
sister, Imelda Lago; two brothers, Louis and Robert; and her parents.Memorial service will be Saturday, June 4 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Sterling. The service will conclude at the church. The Heer Mortuary & Crematory of Brush is entrusted with the arrangements. Freida Schutte
A memorial service for Freida Schutte will be held on Friday, July 29, at 5 p.m. at the Senior Center, 421 W. 6th St., Leadville. Residents are invited to come and share their memories of David and Carol Schutte’s mom.
Barbara Arndt
Long-time Leadville resident Barbara Arndt passed away in Denver on June 15, 2005. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Arndt, who passed away March 5, 2004. She is survived by her sister, Beverly Edwards, her brother, Jim Edwards, her son, Ben Arndt, and her grandson, Justin Bridger Arndt, whom she absolutely adored. A small, family ceremony was held near Evergreen, Colo., to celebrate her life. She will be greatly missed.
