Sarah Amelia Velasquez
Sarah Amelia Velasquez died Sunday, Nov. 27, at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood. Velasquez was 81 years old. She was born in El Valle, N.M. on June 29, 1924. Her parents were the late Filemino and Amelia Romero Cruz.Velasquez grew up in New Mexico and on July 26, 1942, married Jose “Canuto” Velasquez in Penasco, N.M. In 1955 the Velasquezes moved to Redcliff where Jose Velasquez went to work for the New Jersey Zinc Co. at the Gilman Mine.Together the couple had 14 children and raising her family was Velasquez’s full-time job, a job she loved with all her heart. Velasquez was never happier than when she was with her family. She enjoyed listening to country music and watching soap operas and polka dancing on T.V. She also was a wiz with crossword puzzles. Velasquez sewed for her family and as they got older babysat for her many grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking for all of them and especially loved the Friday night family get-togethers where making pastelitos was her specialty.Velasquez was preceded in death by her parents; sisters; four great-grandchildren, Lauralee Gurule, Isiah and Daniel Macias and Hope Velasquez; and one son-in-law, Lynn Oliver. She is survived by her husband in Redcliff; 14 children, Robert (Gerie) Velasquez and Donald Velasquez, both in Leadville, Susan (Doug) Bowen in Grand Junction, Emily (Herson) Medina and Ida (Roger) Avila, both in Leadville, Nancy Catherine (Daniel) Sullivan in Rochester, Ind., Walter (Lorraine) Velasquez in Grand Junction, Jerry (Angel Mondragon) Velasquez in Gypsum, Vern (Lizbeth) Velasquez in Leadville, P-Wee Velasquez in Redcliff, Theresa (Adrian) Martinez and Jodene (Randy) Flores, both in Leadville, Jackie (Tom Barela) Velasquez in Gypsum and Becky (Augie) Barraza in Leadville. Velasquez is also survived by many, many grandchildren and great- grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.The rosary was recited on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial was Thurs., Dec. 1, at 10:30 a.m., both at Annunciation Catholic Church in Leadville. Father Hugh M. Guentner, O.S.B., officiated and burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Leadville. Pallbearers were Michael, Christopher and Eddie Velasquez, Raymond Oliver, Andrew Medina, Roger Avila, Jr., Marcos Luna and Ben Flores. Honorary Pallbearer was Daniel Velasquez. Ushers were Juan and Gabriel Velasquez, Tommy Barela and Nick Gonzales. Presentation of gifts was made by Nadine Castillo and Dawn Fernandez. Following interment services a reception was held at the Leadville Elks Lodge.Arrangements were handled by Bailey Funeral Home in Leadville.
Shellie Grace Smith
Shellie Grace Smith, 48, died Monday, Nov. 7, in her home in Leadville. She was born in Denver on Nov. 30, 1958. Her parents are Larry and Marilyn (Colloms) Montgomery.She married Kelly Smith on Aug. 18, 1974, in Brighton, Colo. Her love of cooking brought them to the mountains where she became a part owner of the Log Cabin Cafe in Frisco. Soon Smith’s health brought on her early retirement and the Smiths settled in Leadville.Along with being a wonderful cook, Smith also loved camping, hiking, plants and her Denver Broncos.She was preceded in death by her mother, Laura Smith. She is survived by her husband, Kelly, and two sons, Brett and Zebulon Montgomery, Leadville, and two daughters, Amber Montgomery and Brandie Smith.
Betty Louviva Farris
Betty Louviva Farris died Saturday, Nov. 19, at St. Anthony Hospital in Thornton. She was 73 years old. She was born in Seymour, Mo., on April 23, 1932. Her parents were the late John W. and Verba (Wingo) Silvey. After graduating from business college in Missouri, she married Wando G. Farris on June 9, 1961, in Ava, Mo.In 1962 the Farrises came to Leadville where Wando Farris went to work for the Climax Molybdenum Mine. Together the couple had three children and Betty Farris spent the rest of her life making her family her priority. She loved cooking and baking for them, and her wonderful fudge soon became legend. People would buy the ingredients and bring them over for Farris to work her magic. Visitors to the Farris home would walk in and ask, “ Is there any fudge left?”After raising her family, Farris went to work for the Delaware Hotel where she worked for many years.She was a sweet and gentle lady who will be missed by all who knew her.She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wando who died on Nov. 3, 2004, and five siblings: sisters Cleo Self and Ruby Lockhart, and brothers Buck, Aaron and Leonard Silvey.Farris is survived by her daughter, Dian Farris in Thornton; and sons, Steve Farris in Colorado Springs, and Darin Farris in Georgetown; three grandchildren, Jodi, Aaron and Zoe Farris; one sister, Leona Comer, in Ava, Mo., and her aunt, Opha Denney, in Springfield, Mo.A visitation was held on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at Bailey Funeral Home and a private family interment was held at the graveside at St. Joseph Cemetery on Wednesday, Nov. 23.Arrangements were handled by Bailey Funeral Home.
Gerald (Jerry) John Windorski
Gerald (Jerry) John Windorski died Nov. 11 in Anaconda, Mont. He was born Aug. 12, 1954, to Kenneth and Lucille Windorski in Crosby, Minn.He grew up in Leadville and obtained his education in St. Mary’s School and the Leadville public schools. He is survived by his wife, Jayne, one son, two step-children and five brothers: Richard (Jean), Tucson, Ariz.; James (Sheree), Kallispell, Mont.; Joel (Marcy), Tucson, Ariz.; Tom (Myrna), Leadville; and Ronald (Kathy), Anaconda.He is also survived by several nieces and nephews including Rita (Lee) Colton, Leadville; Greg (Bev) Windorski; Daniel (Jeni) Windorski, Leadville; and Brenda Martin (Eric) Hazelton, Ind.Contributions may be made to the charity of the individual’s choice.
Paul L. Mindenhall
Paul L. Mindenhall lost his fight with cancer on Dec. 13, 2005. He is the beloved husband of Joanne, father of Therese (Brian), Patrick (Christine), Bernadette (Bryan) and Colleen, and papa of Nikki, Christopher, Ashley, Britney, Thomas, Kayla, Nickolas, Ryan, Jonathan, Elizabeth and Joey.Rosary will be Friday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m., at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary, 29th and Wadsworth in Wheat Ridge, Colo. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, Dec. 19, at 10 a.m., Shrine of St. Anne Catholic Church, Arvada. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Leadville at approximately 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Sangre de Cristo Hospice West, 1439 Main St., Ste A, Canon City, CO 81212.
Donnilea “Donna” M. Myska
Donnilea “Donna” M. Myska, 85, Wheat Ridge, passed away on Friday, Dec. 2 at the Wheatridge Manor. A resident of Wheatridge for the past several years and former, longtime resident of Rock Springs, Wyo., Myska died following a lengthy illness.She was born on Jan 4, 1920 in Leadville, the daughter of John Klintz and Mary Adamic.Myska attended schools in Leadville.She married John “Smitty” Myska in Green River, Wyo. on Sept. 3, 1951, and he preceded her in death on July 14, 1989.Myska was employed as a retail clerk for many years and worked for Safeway and Union Mercantile. She retired on Jan. 1, 1970.She was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Community and K.S.K.J. Lodge #86.Survivors include one sister Madeline Trevethan and
husband Charles of Wheatridge.She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, John Klintz, Ernest Klintz, Joe Klintz and Frank Klintz; three sisters, Anna Klintz, Ernestine Klintz and and Mary Kenick and her stepmother Agnes Klintz.A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Dec. 9 at the Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Rock Springs, Wyo. Interment was in the Paul J. Wataha Memorial Park.The family respectfully suggests that donations in her memory be made to Holy Spirit Catholic Community, P.O. Box 6038, Rock Springs, Wyo. 82902.
Hazel V. Martens
Hazel V. Martens died peacefully in her sleep at North Shore Health Care Facility in Loveland, Colo., on Dec. 8.Hazel Gertrude (Viney) Martens was born in Fort Collins, to Arthur and Marie (Gaye) Viney on Sept. 11, 1920.She graduated from Fort Collins High School in May 1938. She received a teaching certificate from Colorado A&M College and taught elementary school in Oak Creek, Timnath, Harmony School in Fort Collins and in Littleton.She married Herbert Martens on June 2, 1946 in Denver; they later divorced. She moved with him to Davenport, Iowa, until 1956 when they returned to Fort Collins. She received her teaching degree from Colorado State University in May 1964 and began teaching elementary school for the Lake County Schools in Leadville. She retired from teaching in 1984 and moved to Loveland to be near her family.Martens is survived by three sons: Byron “Butch” William
(Patricia) of Milpitas, Calif.; Dwight Herbert “Pete” (Emily) of Reno, Nev.; and H. Brian (Loretta) of Windsor; one daughter, Cherylee of Tucson, Ariz.; and close relative Gwen Hollandsworth of Grand Junction. She is also survived by six grandchildren and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Marie Viney; sisters Kathleen Nelson and Madeline Shook and brother Duane Viney.She loved her flower garden, planting flowers, reading and visiting with her neighbors.Funeral services were Dec. 12 at First Christian Church in Loveland. Gladys Marie Trevethan
Gladys Marie Trevethan, 83, died Dec. 7 at Valley View Health Care Center in Canon City.She was born Feb. 18, 1922, at 128 S. Toledo Ave., Leadville, to Ellis Webster and Mary Jane Sampson. She had two brothers, Edward and Ellis, both deceased, and five sisters, Irene, Mary, Edith and Clara, all deceased, and Geneva Hawkins of LaConner, Wash.Trevethan’s earliest memories include taking a horse-and-buggy ride with her mom and dad while her other brothers and sisters had to stay home. She shared the love for the family dog, Shep, who helped her mother keep track of her while her mother was picking berries, cooking and doing housework.Trevethan was heartbroken when her father died when she was seven years old and her mother died when she was eight. She was raised by her brother, Ed. She shared the good times she had with her nephew, Little Ed, riding an old bike and going fishing. Trevethan quit school in the 11th grade to go to work at St. Vincent Hospital as a nurse’s aide. She met her husband when he was walking home from Smith Lumber Company.She married Harold James Trevethan Oct. 8, 1939, at Annunciation Church in Leadville. Four daughters were born to this union: Patricia Ann (Jerry) Pearson of Hotchkiss, Phyllis Jean (Adolph) Koroshetz of Canon City, Paula Marie (Jerry) McFarland of Canon City and Rita Ann Trevethan of Denver.Trevethan was a high-energy lady. She loved to cook and bake for her family. She volunteered at St. Mary’s School and made costumes for her daughters’ school plays and dance recitals. She completed her GED in 1972. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for her daughters. She was active in many organizations and served as an officer for Rosary Club, Altar and Rosary, Catholic Daughters of America, Eagles Lodge, AARP and Golden Age. She initiated the founding of the Annunciation Rosary Club in Leadville.
Trevethan cooked for the sisters at the Annunciation Convent, worked as a waitress at the Golden Burro and reported her favorite job was working for Dolph and Louis Koroshetz as a clerk in the T & K Pharmacy in Leadville.Trevethan said she had to be a survivor after her husband’s death on Nov. 5, 1977. She received her associate’s degree in general studies in 1985; she earned a second degree, associate of arts, in 1987, graduating in the same year with her daughter Rita at Colorado Mountain College in Leadville.Trevethan loved being with her grandchildren, taking many trips to Hotchkiss to fish and for family reunions as well as graduations for Harold, Lynn and Eric Pearson. She came to Canon City to see Ann’s tap, ballet and piano recitals, for Delia’s wedding, and Ann’s, Kerry’s and Jenny’s graduations and wedding.She went to her grandson Harold’s wedding in Portalas, N.M. She also went to see her sister Geneva and nieces Judy and Grace in Washington and her grandson Lynn in Georgia and Salt Lake City.Trevethan moved to Canon City in October 1996 to be closer to family. She loved to go to the Royal Gorge to have picnics and see the deer. She spent many hours shopping, going to Mass and having dinner with family. She loved to hear great-grandson Dolph play the violin and great-grandson Tyrel play the cello. She loved playing with CJ, Julianna and Thunder.A memorial service was held Monday, Dec. 12, at Annunciation Catholic Church in Leadville with interment following at Leadville Cemetery. Holt Family Funeral Home of Canon City handled the arrangements.
