Cidelia Gomez-Gurule
Cidelia Gomez-Gurule, 87, of Albuquerque and formerly of Leadville, passed away Monday, May 8, in an Albuquerque hospital.
She was born Sept. 4, 1918, in Rosa, N.M., to the late Jose Francisco Sotelo and Inesita Sanchez Sotelo. In addition to her parents, Gomez-Gurule was preceded in death by her first husband of 35 years, Epimenio Gomez, her second husband of 1 1/2 years, Phil Gurule; two sons, Charles and Melvin E. Gomez; and two daughters, Loretta May Gomez and Susan M. Stewart.
Survivors include her companion of 22 years, Matias Martinez; her children, Delfino E. Gomez, Wheat Ridge; Leroy A. Gomez and his wife, Diane, of Ft. Collins; Marie I. Brodie of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Ruby M. Danbury and Nancy E. Romero, both of Albuquerque; Thomas Gomez and his wife, Kathleen L. Gomez of Arvada; a son-in-law, Terence Stewart, of New York City; 22 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Gomez-Gurule was a caring, loving and good person throughout her life. She was a good wife, mother, grandmother and a person who cared about others. She was devoted to her family, the Catholic Church and most of all what God wants all people to be like. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday, May 12, at Annunciation Catholic Church in Leadville. Viewing will be from 5:30 p.m. until the time of the Rosary at the church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at Annunciation Catholic Church with Father Jay Jung, celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her granddaughter and grandsons.
Arrangements were made by French Mortuary in Albuquerque.
Everett Thomas Jardee
Everett Thomas Jardee died Monday, May 1, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center in Salida. He was 39 years old.
Jardee was born in Colorado Springs on April 15, 1967. His parents are Benjamin and Ruth (Kissinger) Jardee.
He was raised in Leadville and went to school there. After graduating from Lake County High School, Jardee went on to art school in Phoenix, Ariz., Jardee also loved to cook, and he put his artistic talent to good use when he later became a chef and was in charge of decorating buffet tables and food.
Jardee was never happier than when he was fishing with friends or spending time with his parents whom he loved with all his heart.
Jardee is survived by his parents, Ben and Ruth Jardee of Leadville and his faithful companion, his dog, Fingers.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, May 6, at 2 p.m. at the Leadville Assembly of God Church. Pastor Tim Garrison officiated.
Services concluded at the church.
Betty Maass
Betty Maass, 82, long-time resident of Granite, died peacefully at her home on Sept. 21.
She was born Betty Jane Smith in Brown’s Valley, Minn., on Nov. 10, 1923. She was brought up on the family farm and learned to be a jack-of-all-trades; sewing, crocheting, carpentry, roofing, fishing and hunting were second nature to her.
Always athletic, Maass was an expert horseback rider. She once rode her horse, Tommy, bareback at a full gallop and saved her lifelong friend, Ruth Reed, from a charging bull by expertly grabbing Ruth’s arm and swinging her up behind her as Maass rode by. She was also a skilled figure skater.
Before moving to Granite 34 years ago, Maass had lived in Germany, Wyoming, Illinois, California, Texas, Washington, Kansas, Tennessee, South Dakota, Oklahoma and Colorado Springs.
Maass loved living in the mountains of Colorado. She was an avid angler and hunter. She caught one of the largest Mackinaw trout ever taken from Twin Lakes. She was also a card player, story teller, pool shark and prankster. Maass lived life on her own terms and to the fullest.
No one who knew Maass will ever forget the sparkle in her beautiful clear blue eyes when she flashed her movie- star smile. Family and friends will forever miss her.
Maass is survived by her husband of 54 years, retired Capt. Walter J. (Moe) Maass of Granite; son James R. Potter and daughter-in-law Nancy K. Reed of Cotopaxi; grandchildren Jackson A. Potter and Aimee K. Potter, both of Chicago; and brother, Francis (Pete) Smith of Pierre, S.D. Her son, Michael A. Potter, and parents, Francis and Mary Smith, predeceased her.
Goldie Berniece Parlin
Goldie Berniece Parlin died Saturday, Oct. 21, at St. Vincent General Hospital in Leadville. Parlin was 99 years old.
She was born in Middlebury, Ind. on Dec. 11, 1906. Her parents were the late Cornelius and Pearl (Weaver) Schrock.
Berniece, as she was known, went to school in Indiana and, following a trip to Colorado with a close friend, decided to stay in Leadville. There she met her future husband and on April 2, 1947, married Fred Parlin. The couple settled into their house on East 9th Street, which they still call their home.
Parlin loved playing bingo and crocheting. She was a good cook and also enjoyed gardening. Anyone who has been to the Parlin home will know of her beautiful doll collection dating back to when she was a child herself.
Parlin loved to travel as well and was able to take some wonderful trips before her health prevented further travel.
For the last two years, Parlin was a resident in the St. Vincent Extended Care Unit.
Parlin is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Erma and Pauline, and her daughter-in-law Donna Jean Parlin who died in 1992.
She is survived by her husband in Leadville, her son Les Parlin, also in Leadville, and one granddaughter, Lindsey Parlin, in Denver.
Services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Bailey Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Russell Baker officiated. Interment was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Leadville. Following the committal service, the family received friends at a reception at the Leadville Elks Lodge.
Arrangements were handled by Bailey Funeral Home.
Albert Sidney “Kris” Christoph
Albert Sidney “Kris” Christoph died Friday, Nov. 10, at the Argyle Care Center in Denver. Christoph was 79 years old.
He was born on Oct. 4, 1927, in Wellington, Texas. His parents were the late Lewis W. and Truly Pleasant (Rippetoe) Christoph.
At the age of two, Christoph and his family moved to Manzanola where Christoph went to school, graduating from Manzanola High School. He then went to Coyne Electrical School in Chicago where he learned his lifelong trade.
Shortly after he finished school, Christoph received his “invitation” to join the U.S. Army. Christoph served in both the Korean conflict and World War II. After receiving an honorable discharge, Christoph returned to Manzanola, and on June 6, 1953, married the former Clara Ann Burress.
The couple lived for a while in Durango before moving to Leadville where Christoph went to work as an industrial electrician at the Climax Molybdenum Mine. Christoph worked for the mine for the next 25 years.
After retiring from mining, Christoph became a seasonal worker for the U.S. Forest Service and continued working for it until he retired in 1999.
For Leadvillites who remember the “T.V. Board,” it was Christoph who would trek up Mosquito Pass to repair the lines when they were down. Even in the winter, Christoph would strap on a pair of snowshoes and head up the pass.
Christoph loved tinkering with things and getting things to work. He was fascinated with windmills, solar-energy systems and hydroponic gardening (gardening without soil).
Christoph loved to sing and play guitar and comes from a family of musicians.
Christoph was active with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union and was a member of both Mountain Crest Baptist Church and 1st Baptist Church in Leadville.
Christoph was an avid reader of Zane Grey and Louis L’Amour, and he enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.
Christoph was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Manning Christoph.
He is survived by his wife in Leadville; four children, Cindy (Pat) Hawkins in Grand Junction, Karen (Stan) Henning in Leadville, Marsha (Chris) Watkins in Colorado Springs and Mark (Joan) Christoph in Arvada; and 11 grandchildren, Bonny (Shawn) Archuleta, Cheryl Hawkins, Denise (Will) Carlin, Holly and Tyler Henning, Rachel, Lewis and Andria Berndt, Andrew, Emily and Abby Christoph. Christoph is also survived by one great-grandson, Isaac Carlin.
According to his wishes, Christoph was cremated. Memorial services will be Saturday, Nov. 18, at 10 a.m. at the Mountain Crest Baptist Church in Leadville. Pastor Rick Mitchell will officiate. Interment will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery with military honors by soldiers from Ft. Carson Army Base.
Patricia Ann Deulen
Patricia Ann Deulen, born March 13, 1935, passed away on Nov. 10, with her family at her side.
Her family moved to Climax around 1945 or 1946. She graduated from Climax High School in 1953.
On Feb. 18, 1956, she married Richard E. Deulen. Their three children were born in the old St. Vincent’s Hospital. All three children graduated from Lake County High School.
Deulen loved living in the mountains; fishing and camping were particular favorites.
“ Let’s go fishing,” she’d say.
Her hobbies included quilting, crocheting, knitting and other crafts. For many years she traveled with her friend Norma Skala to quilting and sewing events.
Deulen was a member of the Eastern Star Colorado Chapter 2 in Leadville for more than 49 years. She enjoyed traveling all over the state and also out of state with her good friend Reta Lou Heinricy for Eastern Star functions.
Deulen was a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church in Leadville.
Deulen was a bus driver for the Lake County School District for 30 years. She also drove the bus for Elder Hostel and the senior citizens. She delivered thousands of children safely every year.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
Deulen is survived by her husband in Leadville; sons, Michael (Cindy) Deulen of Pueblo West and Mark (Lisa) Deulen of Windsor; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Tafoya of Garfield, N.J.; brothers, Charles (Rhea) Kness of Grand Junction and Jimmy John Kness of Loveland; sister, Betty Jean Held of Allentown, Pa.; grandchildren, Corinna (Brent) Mills, Renee Walker, Matthew (Ashlie) Walker, Juanita (John) McCoy, Michael (Jill) Deulen, Justin (Amanda) Deulen, James (Priscilla) Deulen; great-grandchildren, Markus Walker, Dillon Faust and Isabella Marie Deulen; numerous nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.
Deulen was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Deulen Kness, and her sister Jenny Lambert and brother-in-law J. B. Lambert.
