Donald R. Burgess
Donald R. Burgess, 78, of Norman, Okla., died Saturday, Feb. 25. Burgess was a long-time summer resident of Leadville, where he enjoyed fishing and picnicking.He is survived by his wife, Nancy Burgess, and his two sons.Services will be held in Norman, Okla.
Emma Monk
Emma Monk, 98, Ordway, died Nov. 7, 2005, at Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center in La Junta.Monk was born Sept. 3, 1907, on the family farm at Ordway to Henry Fred Peters and Katharina Mumm Peters.On Aug. 7, 1938, she married Vester Monk at the home of her parents. She was a graduate of Ordway High School and also the University of Northern Colorado and made teaching her career for many years, retiring in 1973.She taught first in Rangley and then in Neuma School at Ordway. After her marriage to Vester Monk she taught at Climax for 15 years while her husband was employed at Climax. When that school closed in 1960, she taught in Leadville until 1970. She then moved back to Ordway where she was born and raised on the family farm.She was active in many educational organizations and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. In addition, she was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ordway and also the Missionary Society. Monk is survived by a son, Vester Monk Jr. of Golden, and a daughter Diane (John) Schwartz of Johnstown.
Mildred H. Connors
Mildred H. Connors, 71, of Canon City passed away Feb. 15, in Pueblo. She was born April 15, 1934, in Leadville to the late Otto D. and Clementine (McMourough) Evans.Connors attended St. Mary’s grade school in Leadville and graduated from Leadville High School. She married Donald Connors on Dec. 9, 1951, in Leadville. He resides in Canon City.Connors was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Canon City and also a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary there. She loved working in her flower garden. She didn’t leave a legacy of wealth, but did leave a legacy of love for her children. She raised her children with a firm hand, faith and love, teaching them that there was always hope in God. There are many stories of Connor’s strength and devotion to her family. Connor’s children knew she wanted the very best for them and that she was always in their corner no matter what. She will be missed, but her children say they thank God for giving her to them to be their mother.She leaves to cherish her memory three children: Tauna (John) Firestack of Buena Vista, Duane (Frankie) Connors and Karen Brumbalow, both of Canon City; four grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.Recitation of the Rosary was Tuesday, Feb. 21, followed by the funeral Mass with Reverend James King as celebrant. Both services were at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Interment followed at Lakeside Cemetery in Canon City.Arrangements were handled by Holt Family Funeral Home.

Barbara Roberta Jones
Barbara Roberta Jones passed away on Feb. 1 in Denver from cancer.Born in Leadville on May 21, 1953, to Harry Green and Rose Cortellini Green, she graduated in 1971 from Lake County High School. She later received her accounting degree from the University of Denver. Jones married John Jones in 1986. She was an avid gardener, loved her pets and loved her job. She is survived by her husband, sister Joan Peeper of Carlsbad, N.M., brother Patrick Green of Grand Junction and sister Eileen Green of Denver.
Emma F. Jenkin
Emma F. Jenkin died Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge. Jenkin was 86 years old. She was born in Leadville on July 23, 1919. Her parents were the late John and Agnes (Pavlic) Faidiga.Jenkin went to school in Leadville and then went to work as a lamp technician at the Climax Molybdenum Mine.Jenkin was a wonderful homemaker and loving mother to her son Jim. She enjoyed being outdoors picking berries and mushrooms with her sisters and then making the most delectable jams and jellies. Jenkin liked tending to her little garden in the back yard and spending time with her loyal companion, her dog Ginger.She loved Leadville and never got very far away from home.In her later years, Jenkin became quite the bingo player as well. But her all-time favorite pastime was spoiling her granddaughters.Jenkin belonged to St. Joseph Catholic Church and the SNPJ Lodge.She is preceded in death by her son Jim Jenkin who died in 1991, and her parents, as well as 12 brothers and sisters.She is survived by two granddaughters, Michelle (Josh) Wells in Lakewood and Susan (Chad) Dewey in Colorado Springs; great-grandchildren Brina and Skylar Wells, and Carter and Caden Dewey; one sister Polly Bates in Littleton; and her guardian of the past several years, Kay Paulsen.Services are planned for Friday, March 10 at 10a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. According to her wishes, Jenkin was cremated and her ashes will be laid to rest next to her son in the Elks Rest Cemetery in Leadville.Arrangements are being handled by Bailey Funeral Home.Those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Catholic Community of Leadville, 609 Poplar St., Leadville, CO 80461.
Robert E. Kochevar
Robert E. Kochevar, 70, of Las Vegas, died Feb. 12. He was a retired teacher and served in the U.S. Army. Kochevar was born and reared in Leadville until he graduated from Leadville High School in 1954.He is survived by his wife, Jean; daughters Lori Kochevar Sullivan of Colorado, Tami Hahn of Texas, Ami Chamberlain of Colorado, and Wendi Kelly of New Jersey; and sons, Scott of Nevada, and Casey of Colorado. He is also survived by a half-sister, Nancy Criss of South Carolina and half-brother Johnny Wayne Malow of Grand Junction.He is preceded in death by his mother, JoAnn Malow of Leadville, who died in 1996.Services were Feb. 16 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Las Vegas.
