Beth Janene Hitt was born Jan. 15, 1949, and grew up in Bryan, Ohio. She graduated from Bryan High School, class of 1967, then graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in elementary education in 1972. Beth’s passion for teaching children, coupled with her love of the environment led her to more studies and a master’s degree in outdoor education from Southern Oregon State College in Ashland, Ore., in 1978.
While in Oregon, Beth was on the cutting edge in her field. She led a study of the habitat of spotted owl thus becoming a large part of the trend to save the spotted owl and thousands of acres of old growth forest. Beth’s drive to make an impact ultimately affected anyone and everyone she met. A truly gifted outdoor educator, Beth was able to combine her love of children and the environment.

Beth had the knack for making friends wherever she went; each one feeling special. She also had a magical way of making the seemingly impossible become possible. She played the guitar and piano, and was a lifetime member of the National Girl Scouts. Her tenure as past director of the Girl Scout camp at Meadow Mountain Ranch near Allenspark made use of all her skills, talents and loves. She was a most beloved camp director. Camp gave her many, many close friends over the years.
Survivors, in addition to her many friends, include her daughters, Sena Hitt-Laustsen of Boulder and Jessica Hitt-Laustsen of Longmont; her mother, Virginia (Long) Hitt of Bryan, Ohio; a sister, Linda L. Hitt; nephew, Justin Livingstone and wife, Josalin; a niece, Caitlin Villa; great-nephew and great-niece, Gabriel Hitt-Garcia and Dominique Garza, all in Estes Park; also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.
