KING:
Albert King of Loveland. Service 11 a.m. Monday, October 25, at Allnutt-Hunter Chapel. Interment Resthaven Memory Gardens.
Albert King, 91, of Loveland passed away Friday at Good Samaritan Village in Loveland.
He was born Oct. 7, 1913, in Westmoreland City, Pa., to Johann and Maria Koenig, one day after they arrived in the United States from Austria. He was born as Albert Koenig.
He was orphaned at 13 and moved to Cleveland, Ohio, to live with an older sister. He had to quit school after eighth grade to work at a factory so he could give money to his sister.
At 17 he was offered the opportunity to go West to work on a ranch in Wyoming with a friend of the family from the “old country.” He took the offer and with no experience was placed in a sheep wagon in the backcountry to tend sheep. A massive Wyoming blizzard was the catalyst for his decision to give up sheepherding.
Albert hitchhiked to Fort Warren Army Base in Cheyenne, Wyo., where he enlisted in the U.S. Army. For simplification at the time of his enlistment, he changed his name to King. He maintained a relationship with the extended Herbst family in Wyoming, where he met and eventually fell in love with Doris, the lovely and beautiful daughter of John and Marie Herbst.
Albert’s service to his country in the Army led him to be involved in many interesting events:
Albert was part of a model Army troop on display during the San Diego Exposition in 1934. He was a model soldier in the U.S. Army.
When stationed at the Presidio, he was one of the first people to walk (march) across the Golden Gate Bridge at its opening in 1937.
Albert was stationed at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked.
He attended and graduated from Officers Candidate School. He was transferred to England to serve until the end of World War II.
Albert courted Doris by mail during the war, and proposed and married Jan. 9, 1943. After the war they were stationed in Adak, Alaska, in the Aleutian Islands, where he made the furniture the young family used while living in a Quonset hut on the base. They made many lasting friends and had a wonderful time.
In 1954, Albert retired from the Army in Texas with the experiences that made him part of “The Greatest Generation.” At retirement he moved his family to Loveland, where he and Doris raised their family. Albert retired from the Great Western Sugar Co. - MSG facility in Johnstown in 1973.
Al was a very disciplined man and not a man of many words. The basic things of life were his most important - the love of his wife, Doris, shelter over his head, family and good, home-cooked food. His pleasures included polka dancing, RVing and television. He even did a little inventing and never wasted a thing.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father and seven brothers and sisters. Albert is survived by his wife, Doris; a daughter, Carol and son-in-law Chuck Smotherman, of Windsor; a son, John and daughter-in-law Carol of Ridgway; grandsons Trevor and Derek Smotherman; and granddaughters, Ashley and Sharra King; three great-granddaughters, Mckenzie, Delaney and Britton Smotherman; and a great-grandson, Blake Smotherman.
Albert is loved and will be missed by his family and all of his family friends.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Allnutt Hunter Chapel. Interment with full military honors at Resthaven Memory Gardens, followed by a reception at the daughter’s home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Samaritan of Loveland or a charitable organization of choice in care of Allnutt Hunter Chapel, 2100 N. Lincoln Ave., Loveland, 80538.
