Her family always came first in her life, and she kept them updated with each other through numerous letters.
Joan was an accomplished watercolor painter in her early years. While living in Estes Park, she developed a skill and art pressing wildflowers to make pictures and bookmarks, which she sold locally. Her work was quite popular. Joan kept busy collecting flowers to press and could identify almost every flower and plant in the Rockies.

Joan also was a world thinker and avid reader. She considered many different opinions and was self-taught on a variety of subjects. She and Clem enjoyed traveling and especially liked the Four Corners area, with its Native American culture and art. Joan worked for several years at the Thunder Mountain Indian Shop in Estes Park.
Wherever Joan resided, the Catholic Church was the center of her community, being a very devout Catholic. She taught religious education and assisted with funeral meals.
