Jim N. Griffin

Jim N. Griffin of Louisville died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, in Louisville.
He was 79 years old.

Mr. Griffin was born Aug. 25, 1925, to Lowell Griffin and Lola (Holloway) Griffin in Deming, Ind.

On Dec. 19, 1948, he married Elizabeth Louise (Bertrand) Griffin in Indianapolis.

Mr. Griffin graduated from Cicero High School in Cicero, Ind.

He also graduated from Purdue University in 1950, earning a bachelor’s degree in math and physics.

He worked for CAA in Indianapolis; Glen L. Martin in Baltimore; ITT in Fort Wayne, Ind.; and IBM in Boulder, retiring in 1987.

Mr. Griffin was a mason. He also was a member of Boulder Lodge No. 45, Boulder Valley Christian Center and Young at Heart.

He enjoyed ham radio, WØNCD, computers, astronomy, photography, bible study, hiking, bowling, music, his family and pets.

Mr. Griffin is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of Louisville; his daughters, Sandra Jewell of Highlands Ranch and Karen Gleason of Livermore; his sons, Dr. William Griffin of Springfield, Mo., and James Griffin of Farmington, N.M.; and, five grandsons, two granddaughters and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harry C. Griffin.

Memorial services were held Thursday, Nov. 11, at Boulder Valley Christian Church in Boulder.

Gerald Schlatter officiated.

Interment followed at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Joyce Kay Stough

Joyce Kay Stough of Longmont died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, in Longmont.
She was 67 years old.

Ms. Stough was born April 30, 1937, to Manford Otis Miller and Fern Eva Hogan in Boulder.

On Oct. 11, 1956, she married William Stough Sr., in Lafayette.

Ms. Stough is survived by her husband, William, of Steelville, Mo.; her two sons, W. Glenn and Matt J. Stough, both of Longmont; her daughter, Shelley Layne Merrill of Phoenix; three sisters, Norma Barden of Sonoma Beach, Calif., Phyllis Samansky of Tucson, Ariz., and Marlene Dewey of Northglenn; and, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Carol May Stubbs.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 4, at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Collins.

Interment followed at Resthaven Memory Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Joyce Stough Memorial Fund, in care of Resthaven Funeral Home, 100 E. County Road 30, Fort Collins, Colo., 80525.

Frank Dowling

Frank Dowling of Longmont, formerly of Erie, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, in Longmont.
He was 95 years old.

Mr. Dowling was born Nov. 8, 1909, to Patrick and Elizabeth (Cowley) Dowling in Denver.

On Oct. 12, 1928, he married Jeanette Marie Strehlow in Flint, Mich.

He spent his early years living in the Great Divide country and attending Moffat County schools.

He worked as a coal miner and was a member of the United Mine Workers.

He enjoyed dining out, visiting with people, gardening, yard work and spending time with his great-grandchildren.

Mr. Dowling is survived by a granddaughter, Linda (David) Zeutzius of Erie; two great-grandchildren, Amanda and Joshua Zeutzius of Erie; and, several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette; a son, Jack Dowling; and, three sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 6, at Lewellen Longmont Memorial Chapel in Longmont.

Pastor Tom Duckworth officiated.

Interment followed at Mountain View Cemetery in Longmont.

Dominic Vincent Rizzi

Dominic Vincent Rizzi of Lafayette died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2005. He was 19.

Mr. Rizzi was born to Timothy and Lisa Romano Rizzi on July 11, 1986.

Mr. Rizzi graduated from Centaurus High School in 2005. He was employed as a mechanic at Lafayette Small Engine Repair, and was attending Denver Automotive and Disel College.

He is survived by his parents, Timothy and Lisa Rizzi; his fiance, Jenny Shaw; his sister Sarah Rizzi Lopez of Broomfield; his brother, Anthony Rizzi; his grandparents, Pauline Romano of Lafayette, Victor and Joyce Romano of Plymoth Meeting, Pa., and Richard and Mary Rizzi of Louisville; and, several nieces, aunts and uncles.

Nick loved music and laughter and always stepped up when called upon to help others. He had a lifelong interest in science and was was a natural explorer. His family and friends will miss his endless curiosity, his sense of adventure and his playful spirit.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m.- 5p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Avalon Funeral Home, 1320 Centaur Village Dr.

A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 30, at the Immaculate Conception Church, 110 W. Simpson St. Lafayette. Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, at the Immaculate Conception Church.

Contributions for Mr. Rizzi’s fiance and baby daughter, Jasmine, may be made to Dominic Rizzi memorial fund at the Bank of the West, 890 W. Cherry St., Louisville.

Russel Davies

Russel Davies of Longmont died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005, at Longmont United Hospital. He was 85 years old.

Mr. Davies was born to William and Ella Buckley Davies on April 21, 1920, in Longmont.

He was raised and lived in the Hygiene and Longmont area.

He graduated from Longmont High School in 1938.

On Jan. 24, 1959, he married Phyllis June Scarpella in Boulder.

Mr. Davies was a carpenter foreman for Fitzsimmons Army Hospital. He retired in the 1980s.

He attended Hygiene United Methodist Church.

Mr. Davies was a 30-year member and a past fire chief for the Hygiene Volunteer Fire Department.

He also was a member of the BPOE Elks No. 1055, where he served as exalted ruler from 1968-1969; the IOOF Odd Fellows; and, the Longs Peak Grange.

He enjoyed bowling and was a member of the Elks and Odd Fellows bowling teams. He participated in horseshoe-pitching tournaments and played baseball in his early years.

He enjoyed playing poker and meeting friends for coffee at the Hygiene café.

Mr. Davies is survived by his son, Tom Davies of Longmont; his brother, Ernest (Virginia) Davies of Longmont; his brother-in-law, Carmen (Barbara) Scarpella of Longmont; his sisters-in-law, Dorothy Greve of Longmont and Ellon “Woody” Scarpella of Wray; and, numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were hosted on Nov. 16, 2005, at the LifeBridge Christian Church.

The Rev. Burry Bessee of the Hygiene United Methodist church served as the officiant.

Interment was at the Hygiene Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hygiene Volunteer Fire Department or the BPOE Elks No. 1055, in care of the Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry St., Longmont, Colo. 80501.

C.C. "Clancy" Waneka

C.C. "Clancy" Waneka died Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the Balfour Retirement Community in Louisville.

He was 94 years old.

Mr. Waneka was born to C.A "Gus" Waneka and Gladys Dixon Waneka on March 27, 1911, in Lafayette.

He was raised in Lafayette and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1929.

He attended the Colorado Agricultural College, now known as Colorado State University, in Fort Collins. There, he studied biology.

In 1932, Mr. Waneka married Helen May Graham in Kimball, Neb.

Mr. Waneka taught English and biology at Wellington High School for two years. He then worked for the Soil Conservation Service with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 16 years.

During that time, Mr. Waneka and his family lived in New Mexico, Texas, and Colorado.

In 1951, he retired from the government and became self-employed as a farmer and dairyman in Lafayette.

Mr. Waneka was involved in many community affairs.

He campaigned for state representative in Boulder County and was very active in affairs at CSU.

He served on the school’s governing board for eight years and was president for four years.

He traveled to Nigeria with then CSU president Dr. William Morgan, to teach agriculture.

Mr. Waneka was active in the Farmers Union, the Lafayette Lions Club and the Methodist Church.

Mr. Waneka is survived by his three children, Carole (Don Dietz) Waneka Bove of Fort Collins, Dr. G. Pat (Marti) Waneka of Denver and Dr. Michael (Kay) Waneka of Greeley; his sister, Wilma Huckins of Broomfield; his brother, Ken Waneka of Longmont; seven grandchildren, Rick Bove, Robin Marshall, Dana Rowan, Lane Waneka, Michelle Waneka, Michael Waneka and Dr. Stacy Waneka; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen.

A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 2, at the United Methodist Church of Lafayette, 1255 Centaur Village Drive.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Boulder and Broomfield Counties or the Lafayette Miners Museum, 108 E. Simpson St., Lafayette.

Phyllis Joanne Calvo

Phyllis Joanne Calvo of Lafayette died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, in Boulder.
She was 56 years old.

Ms. Calvo was born May 24, 1948, to James Vallery and Margaret Mitchell in Lafayette.

She lived in Lafayette her whole life.

On Feb. 20, 1991, she married Ross Calvo in Boulder.

Previously, she was married to Harold Manzanares. The couple divorced in 1971.

Ms. Calvo worked as a quality inspector at Emerson Dietrich Standard in Boulder for 20 years.

She was a member of VFW Post No. 1771 Ladies Auxiliary of Lafayette.

She enjoyed bingo and spending time with her family.

Ms. Calvo is survived by her husband, Ross of Lafayette; her sons, Adrian Manzanares of Colorado Springs and Eric Calvo of Kansas; her sister, Marilyn Minor of Lafayette; her brother, Jim Vallery of Longmont; and, 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A recitation of the Rosary and memorial service were held Tuesday, Nov. 16, at Darrell Howe Mortuary Chapel in Lafayette.

Father Bob Amundsen officiated.
