Edith Hornby

February 23, 1909 - October 14, 2007

Edith Hornby of Longmont, Colorado died October 14, 2007 at HospiceCare Center in Louisville, Colorado. She was 98 years old.

Edith Hornby was born in Poland February 23, 1909 to Gracyn and Mary (Sierpiec) Cymanowski.

Her family immigrated to the United States in 1911 and settled in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She married Guy Hornby in Kenosha, Wisconsin on April 8, 1927. She and Guy moved to Vernon County on the family dairy farm, and they milked thirty head of cows twice a day by hand. They moved from the farm to Boulder, Colorado in 1949, they stayed in the Niwot area for thirty years until retiring from farm life in 1981 and moving to Loveland until Guy passed away in 1986. She was a member of Longs Peak United Methodist Church.

Edith worked for Esquire Magazine (Neodata) in Boulder. Edith was outstanding homemaker who loved to crochet; take care of her family, and her pet, Cindy. She was a member of the Red Rock Rambler Square Dance Club and after retiring to Loveland enjoyed Ballroom Dancing at the Various Senior Centers.

Edith is survived by her daughter, Doris Defalco of Longmont, Colorado, a brother Norbert Polansky of Kenosha, Wisconsin, brother-in-law Paul Lucas of Aurora, Colorado, four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and twelve great-great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Thursday October 18, 2007 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel; Visitation will be 9:30 to 10:30 AM before service on Thursday. Interment will be at Mountain View Memorial Park Boulder, Colorado. Contributions can be made to Hospice of Boulder and Broomfield Counties or Longmont Humane Society and sent in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.

Frank Wood

October 4, 1913 - March 16, 2005

Frank Wood of Longmont died March 16, 2005 at Life Care Center of Longmont. He was 91.

He was born October 4, 1913 in Hill County, Texas to John and Maggie (Reeves) Wood.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He married Betty McDonald in March 1966 in New Iberia, Louisiana.

Mr. Wood was a machinist, working in oil production. He retired in 1978.

He moved to Longmont in September 2002 from Texas.

Mr. Wood will be remembered as an avid fisherman.

He is survived by a son, Frank O. Wood and his wife Betty of Amarillo, Texas; a daughter, Kamalia Deneau and her husband Dan of Longmont; his former wife, Betty Wood of Longmont; a brother Glenn Wood of Denver; a sister, Thelma Buck of Texas; and six grandchildren, Tiffany, Kristyn and Brandon all of Longmont and Robbie, Rusty and Cassie of Amarillo, Texas.

Private family services and interment will be held at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery.

Gene Gladden

October 15, 1944 - March 28, 2005

Gene Gladden of Longmont died March 28, 2005 at Longmont United Hospital. He was 60.

He was born October 15, 1944 in Springfield, Missouri to Noel and Cassie (Faulkner) Gladden.

He married Sharon Wickersham on January 24, 1986 in Lyons, Colorado.

He moved to Longmont in 1970 from Sandwich, Illinois.

Mr. Gladden owned and operated Gene Gladden Plumbing of Longmont.

A member of the John Harold Buckley Post 32 American Legion in Longmont, Mr. Gladden was also President of Foothills Fishing and Game for 6 years. He enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, cooking, gardening and spending time with his friends. He will be remembered as a man who conscientiously used his plumbing profession to serve the community. He was a mentor to other plumbers, always willing to loan his equipment to others and make lives better.

He was preceded in death by his wife Sharon in 1999 and a daughter, Dawn Watts in 2003.

He is survived by two daughters, Tami Gladden of Lochbuie, CO and Traci Gladden of Denver; a brother Olin Gladden of Alaska; his father of Bolivar, Missouri; 6 grandchildren, Tasha Lopez of Commerce City, James Watts of Commerce City, Jennie Watts of Thornton, JoAnna Nguyen, Brianna Montoya and Tonya Montoya and two great-grandchildren, Kolby Lopez and Jordan Watts.

Memorial Service will be 1:30 PM Friday April 1, 2005 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel with David Bradshaw of LifeBridge Christian Church officiating. Cremation to take place at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. Inurnment at Foothills Gardens of Memory. A reception will follow services at the John Harold Buckley Post 32, American Legion, 315 S. Bowen Street in Longmont. Memorial Contributions may be made to Colorado Division of Wildlife and sent in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry Street Longmont, CO 80501.

Major Glen E. Hart

December 19, 1917 - October 13, 2007

Major Glen E. Hart, of Longmont peacefully passed away in his home Saturday October 13, 2007. He was 89 years old.

Glen was born December 19, 1917 in Verdon, Nebraska the son of Henry W. Hart and Edith “Connley” Hart. He graduated from Verdon High School and attended Doane Collage. After collage he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1940 he joined the army as a private in the infantry. He was stationed at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii during the attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. Immediately he returned to the states for pilot training and graduated from Luke Field in Arizonia. Glen was then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps., and sent to New Caledonia in the South Pacific. On January 17, 1944 while stationed at Rabual Harbor he left for his 104th combat mission, was shot down, and crash landed into the Coral Sea where he spent a week in a one man life raft. He was rescued by a PBY flying boat called the “Dumbo” on January 24, 1944 after Glen signaled another fighter plane with his small hand mirror. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, and the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters. He returned to the states as a flight instructor training pilots for combat.

Glen married Pauline Hankins in Falls City, Nebraska on March 18th, 1944. The couple moved to Longmont with their two daughters Marilyn and Linda in 1950. He spent 20 years working at Rocky Flats Atomic Plant doing instrumentation and computer work, while continuing a career as a military reservist. He retired from Rocky Flats and went on to work for Kodak for ten years as a computer applications processor. During the Cold War he did classified volunteer work for the Atomic Energy Commission. His efforts received a commendation letter from President Nixon. After 37 years in the military he retired from the Air Force as a Major.

He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, the VFW, the U.S. Chess Federation, and the Instrument Society of America. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hiking and fishing, reading, and working on his home computer. On of his favorite hobbies was operating his armature radio, as an avid chess player he won numerous trophies in tournaments.

Glen is survived by his wife Pauline, his daughters Marilyn Dunn and husband Frank of Pueblo, Linda Philpott and husband Ken of Paonia; granddaughters Patricia Hamilton-Philpott of Aspen, Sarah Sheets and her husband Alan of Loveland, Jennifer Rouge of Longmont, Dr. Melissa Rouge DVM of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Amanda Rouge of Longmont; great-grandchildren Christian and Elanna Sheets of Loveland; half-brother Dan Hart of Reserve, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his half-brother Dale Hart.

A memorial service will be at 1pm on Saturday October 20, 2007 in the Lanyon Chapel at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Longmont, officiated by Reverend George Worcester and Chaplain Dale Poland. A cremation has been held. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Glen’s name to the American Diabetes Assocation in care of Ahlberg’s Funeral Chapel.

Harvey Dean Fiechtner

July 18, 1933 - March 30, 2005

Harvey Dean Fiechtner of Mead, CO died March 30, 2005 in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was 71 years old.

He was born July 18, 1933 to John and Mollie (Betz) Fiechtner on the family farm in Mead, Colorado and spent his entire life on the same farm.

He graduated from Mead High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955.

Mr. Fiechtner married Rose Ellen Burback on January 13, 1954 in Mead. The recently celebrated their 51st Anniversary.

He and his family operated a dairy farm for 40 years. He retired from the family farm in 1987 and helped his son, Kevin, start a dairy in Greeley. He also worked at several part-time jobs including Frontier Fertilizer, Mead Co-op and presently at Longs Peak Equipment Company.

He was a member of the Mountain View Fire Protection District and retired after 40 years of volunteer service. He was also a life long member of Mead United Methodist Church where he was a trustee and of the Mead Senior Citizen Group.

Mr. Fiechtner donated blood regularly, donating over 18 gallons of blood to the Bonfils Blood Center. He loved to ride his custom-made touring bicycle making frequent Sunday afternoon excursions to Estes Park and the Ft. Collins area.

He is survived by his wife of Mead; a son, Kevin Fiechtner and his wife Tammy of Stapleton, Nebraska; a daughter, Robin Jurgens and her husband Tom of Mesa, Arizona; two brothers, Raymond Fiechtner of Mead and Arvid Fiechtner and his wife Barbara of Berthoud; a sister, Ramona Stotts of Greeley; three grandchildren, Melissa Jurgens, Matthew Fiechtner and Nicole Fiechtner and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorial service 11:00 AM Thursday, April 7, 2005 at Mead United Methodist Church with Rev. Millard Fairchild officiating. Cremation has taken place in Arizona. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Harvey Fiechtner Memorial Fund to be donated to his favorite charities and sent in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry Street Longmont, CO 80501.

Helen Rachel Genin

April 27, 1908 - October 6, 2007

Helen Rachel Genin was born April 27, 1908, in rural Princeton, Ill., to Clyde and Mary Josephine Price Howard. A life-long resident of Princeton, she moved to Colo. in 2004 to spend time with family there.

Helen left her family farm at age 14 and got a waitressing job in town, and remained in the restaurant business throughout her life. She owned Helen's Cafe on South Main in Princeton during the 1950s and 1960s, and was known for keeping everybody's coffee cups full and making the best cinnamon rolls around. She was characterized as a determined “go getter” and a hard worker. She never owned a car, walked everywhere she went, and was easily recognized by her arm-swinging brisk walk even into her 90s.

In her early life, she attended the First Christian Church, and married Russell Wright in 1928 and they had six children together. Later, she married Henry “Hank” Genin around 1960.

She loved spending time with family and friends, and also enjoyed dancing, reading, shopping, travel, gardening (especially irises and roses) and was an excellent cook.

Helen remained active until her passing, and was a born again Christian looking forward to heaven. She was energetic, full of fun, and an inspiration to all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, her sister Marjorie Genslinger Howe and brother Walter Howard, one niece, Bonnie Rossler, and one son, James “Jim” Wright. She is survived by five children: William “Bill” Wright and wife Marlene of Longmont, Colo., Mary Jo Roark and husband Bob of Longmont, Terrell “Butch” Wright and wife Marlene of Burlington, Iowa, Nancy Fandel and husband Dave of Princeton, Gary “Stub” Wright and wife June of Princeton, and several grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and special friends.

A memorial service will be held October 19 at 2 p.m. at the Ahlberg Funeral Chapel in Longmont, with Pastor Bob Roark officiating. Services and burial were held in Malden, Ill.

Hilma Schaefer Berry

October 31, 1912 - March 30, 2005

Hilma Schaefer Berry of Longmont died March 30, 2005 at HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties Care Center in Louisville. She was 92.

She was born October 31, 1912 in Crandon, Wisconsin to August and Clara (Groetsch) Karlberg.

She graduated from Crandon High School in 1930. She then graduated from Milwaukee Teachers College in 1933 with a degree in Teaching and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Teaching from University of Northern Colorado in 1958.

She married Jim Schaefer in 1937. He preceded her in death in 1957. She then married Ralph Berry on October 1, 1966 in Pactola, South Dakota.

She moved to Longmont in 1944 from Appleton, Wisconsin.

Mrs. Berry was a homemaker and a teacher. She taught Kindergarten for 17 years at Mountain View Elementary, retiring in 1975.

A member of First Church of Christ Scientist in Longmont, Mrs. Berry was also a member of American Association of University Women and PEO Chapter FD. She also taught Sunday school for 25 years, volunteered for Meals on Wheels for 20 years and was a Brownie Girl Scout Leader for 15 years.

She will be remembered as a hard-working, kind-hearted, generous woman who loved life and her family. Camping, cooking, baking, quilting and sewing filled her life and filled so many with pleasure.

She was preceded in death by her first husband in 1957; her second husband in 1980; her parents; and a grandson, Travis John “T.J.” Schaefer in 1981.

She is survived by a son, Dick Schaefer and his wife Judy of Longmont; two daughters, Gretchen Knutson and her husband Steve of Longmont and Jan Horner and her husband Bob of Boulder; a stepdaughter, Veryl McBride and her husband Mike of Denver; a brother, Richard Karlberg of California; a sister, Ruth Mattlin of Minnesota; 11 grandchildren, Todd R. Schaefer, Stephanie Schaefer, Tyler J. Schaefer, Lori Swetala, Cheryl Helget, Mark Knutson, Kelley Pauley, Shawna Linstedt, Andrea Barber, Lara Jean O’Connor and Greg McBride and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorial Service 2:30 P.M. Monday. April 4, 2005 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel with Bob Horner officiating. Cremation will take place at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. Memorial Contributions may be made to First Church of Christ Scientist and sent in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry Street Longmont, CO 80501.

Jake Brose

April 6, 1923 - October 4, 2007

Jake Brose, 84, of Longmont died October 4, 2007 at HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties Care Center in Louisville.

He was born April 6, 1923 in Arena, North Dakota to John J. and Caroline (Gellner) Brose. He attended school in Wing, North Dakota.

Jake married Catherine Leno August 4, 1942 in Bismarck, North Dakota.

He moved to Longmont in 1962 from North Dakota.

Jake farmed for 19 years in North Dakota and then went to work for Ranch Wholesale in Longmont in 1962. He worked there for 22 years and then worked for Wheelers, Traylor Hardware and Budget Home Center until his retirement in 1998.

He was a member of New Creation Church and enjoyed playing the guitar and drums and watching football, baseball and rodeos.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Carol Jean Smith in 1984, and six brothers and three sisters

Survivors include his wife Catherine of Longmont; a son Kevin Brose and his wife Loretta of Longmont; four grandchildren, Carina Brose, Krista Brose, Lynn Stieber and her husband Joe and Robert Smith and his wife Melanie; and eight great-grandchildren, and a sister Olga Kline and husband Ted of Bismarck, North Dakota.

Visitation will be 1-4 PM Sunday, October 7 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Funeral Service 1:30 PM Monday, October 8 at New Creation Church with Rev. Mario Latini of New Creation Church officiating. Interment Foothills Gardens of Memory. Memorial contributions may be made to New Creation Church and sent to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.
